Help with double name

We named our daughter [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. It’s a family name. Sometimes we call her [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as a nickname which is also a family name. People tend to shorten it to [name_f]Millie[/name_f] though, which I dislike. Sometimes I call her [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Is [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] too long to be a double barrel name? I would love to have her go by that a lot of the time. Thanks for your advice!

I think you could call her that for sure, and see if others pick it up, but I do think “Emmeline Grace” is a lot to go by all the time and that a lot of people will drop [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? As I say, that shouldn’t stop you using it

I think I’d move away from [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as a nickname if you don’t like [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. Do you like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]? [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? [name_f]Lina[/name_f]? [name_f]Lina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]?
Or would you rather she was [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] if not [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]?

Thanks! I love [name_f]Lina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]! We chose [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as her nickname because of my husband’s grandmother [name_f]Mildred[/name_f]. My kids and husband call her [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] all the time and people at church. I call her [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I wish I could settle on just one name. When she goes to school I think I will introduce her as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] so people don’t shorten it to [name_f]Millie[/name_f] like you said. I wish I had thought of [name_f]Lina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] before now! I don’t think I should add in another name. :sob: But I really love that. Hmmm. I don’t know what to do lol.

I’d call her [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] is a bit long to have something behind it just my personal opinion. [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is cute too but unfortunately the shortening would naturally happen regardless in some circles. I think you can avoid people saying [name_f]Millie[/name_f] by itself only if you switch nicknames.

Thanks! I didn’t mean to flag your comment. :see_no_evil_monkey: I don’t prefer [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] since it’s not a family name and I prefer long names so I wouldn’t want people calling her just [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] either. Do you like [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? Is it weird for me to call her [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? People at church and family calls her [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] but when she goes to school I will introduce her as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]. Is that weird? Thanks again!

I do like [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] yes. I’ve been to school with a couple double middle name people. Over time their double name does stick. Introducing her as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] though is still a good choice.

I think you can change it to Emmeline-Grace but I still think she’ll still primarily get Millie, Mille Grace and then names like Millie G, Emmy G or Eggy (last from teen friends & only in a nicknaming / gentle teasing culture like UK and Oz.)

Have you thought about changing her name to “Millie-Grace”? You’d still get a lot of people just using Millie & possibly Meg or Maisie - but I also think you’d get more usage of Grace with Millie-Grace then Emmeline-Grace.(I recognise you don’t love Millie but just to say it’s more likely to get Grace used.)

But if / given it’s essentially about prioritising the two names because you love them equally, and getting them more likely used together by more people, you could and should go for Emmeline-Grace. It’s a beautiful name and it’s about naming her the name or a name that feels and fits perfectly. :ballet_shoes: If you’re ok for Grace to be used just by family and close family friends, then keep Emmeline.

I think that sounds like a good plan – I’ve known a few people who’ve only ever been their full name at school/work but have a shortened form just for home

As for settling on one name, I think it’s up to you to decide what you feel happiest calling her – and what feels most natural

(but for what it’s worth, I think it’s fairly normal for someone to be called multiple forms of their name or nickname – even by the same person!)

I actually love [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]! I don’t think it’s too long to be a double-barrelled name at all, and I think it flows beautifully. I also love that both [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] have family significance, so you have lovely reasons behind the different names.

I don’t think it’s weird for you to call her [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Nicknames often develop naturally within families, and it sounds like [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] has become a special name for her at home and at church. [name_m]You[/name_m] can absolutely introduce her as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] at school and let her decide what she prefers as she gets older.

I also wouldn’t worry too much about not having settled on just one name! [name_m]You[/name_m] clearly love her full name, and there’s no need to add [name_f]Lina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or change anything just because you’ve discovered another combination you love. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is beautiful as it is, and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is a lovely family nickname. [name_m]You[/name_m] don’t have to choose between them!

i’m an emilia, and i’ve probably gone by any other nickname other than millie! i think that no matter whether you name her emmeline grace, or millie grace she will one day have a preference of her own. she might choose to go by an entirely different nickname that her friends call her, so if you want her first name to be emmeline grace then go for it; but people make nicknames for things all the time. :sunflower:

i’m just going to add, from the comments that i’ve read, you’ve seen pretty focused on a family name. considering she honours family in her legal name maybe it would be okay for her to have a nickname of her own. just a though, i’m not judging you and think that millie grace is incredibly sweet :strawberry:

don’t let the idea of somebody calling her another name stop you, name your child what you want her name to be :dove:

[name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is gorgeous!!! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

FWIW, I think there’s no harm in correcting folks if you encounter them calling her [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. We have a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] in our family; we always corrected people when they shortened it to [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. Now SC is a teen with her own feelings around her name, and she’s decided she doesn’t mind teachers and school friends calling her “just [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] …” but she’s [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] most everywhere but school. I adore her double name. It’s so special. [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] has a similar cadence… it’s so swoony and so wonderful! I’m definitely team [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]!

Such a beautiful name!

Personally I would move away from [name_f]Millie[/name_f] altogether and embrace [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Lina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I think most people wouldn’t use [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as full name due to the length. So I would switch it up altogether by using [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] which is so sweet and southern

I will keep Millie Grace since it’s a family name and she’s used to it. But thanks so much!

I actually think both are beautiful! If I’m being honest, [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] is probably my personal favourite of the two first names. I think [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is gorgeous, and I can absolutely see why you fell in love with it, especially with the family significance behind both names. Lennebelle is very sweet and distinctive, too!

That said, I think I prefer [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] “Millie Grace” as a complete name and nickname combination. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] feels so elegant, while [name_f]Millie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] has such a lovely, sweet charm to it. I especially love that both combinations have family meaning behind them.

I can understand why you still think about [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f], particularly when it was a name you had imagined for your daughter. I think it’s possible to have a little sadness about a name you didn’t use without that meaning you chose the wrong name. Sometimes we can love more than one name, but ultimately only get to choose one!

And I think there’s something really special about the fact that [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] has become her name over these past three years. [name_m]You[/name_m] have a beautiful name for your little girl, and you’re still allowed to love [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f], too.

I have one more question for ya’ll. :see_no_evil_monkey: I wanted to name her [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and call her Lennebelle. [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] are family names. My mom, sister, and husband were not fans, so we didn’t name her that. Although, my husband was going to let me name her that. I didn’t even know he didn’t like it until after she was born. [name_m]Deep[/name_m] down, I somewhat wish we had gone with that name. [name_f]May[/name_f] I ask do you prefer [name_f]Lenora[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] “Lennebelle” or [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] “Millie Grace” ? I know I can’t go back and change her name as she is almost three years old and of course my husband said no and she has already evolved into her name. :see_no_evil_monkey:
