Help with Elle / Ella

We are in the third trimester (woohoo homestretch!) and we aren’t “settled” on our baby name…Ahhh! Our previous children were not remotely this hard to name! Naming is so much more stressful this time around!

Our two children are:
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] & [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] ([name_m]Jake[/name_m])

We also have an [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] that we lost to miscarriage.

This baby is a girl and the name that my husband and I have battled it out on because I feel like it’s “her name” is simple, elegantly understated [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. Preferably [name_f]Elle[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I love it so. much. I have loved the name [name_f]Elle[/name_f] since we had our son, who is now 8 lol. So it’s not like a passing fad to me. My husbands pick is [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I don’t hate [name_f]Grace[/name_f], but it’s not as exciting to me. His issue is that he feels like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] isn’t a complete name, and it’s like naming our kid the letter L. He doesn’t “get” the name or the appeal. He agreed to compromise and name the baby [name_f]Ella[/name_f] because he feels like it’s more formal and I can use [name_f]Elle[/name_f] as a nickname. I think [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is actually a more mature name than [name_f]Ella[/name_f] for a grown woman. Another option I suggested that he’s not sold on is to name the baby [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. This is a family name on my side, and also my daughter [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]’s middle name (hence the issue with using [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Does [name_f]Ella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f] work?

[name_f]Ella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f] definitely works, although I’m on your side in that I prefer the simple, elegant [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. [name_f]Elle[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is gorgeous. It sounds like the compromise is going to be your best bet though so [name_f]Ella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f] seems like it may be your best bet.

I think kids deserve their own names though so I’d advise against using [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] again.

Are you open to other full names for [name_f]Elle[/name_f]? There’s loads—honestly anything that starts with [name_f]El[/name_f]-, includes -el-, or even starts with L could work
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Brielle[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellery[/name_u]
[name_f]Eleni[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]

Ok this makes me feel so much better…I worry that [name_f]Ella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f] wouldn’t work, it’s reassuring to hear it does lol!

I do agree that kids should have their own name. I’m just desperate to use [name_f]Elle[/name_f] so I’ve tried every trick in the book with my husband to get him to budge lol! Including most of the other suggested names, all except [name_f]Ella[/name_f] have been a “no”. I would say he is more picky than i am about names, but in his defense his big thing is that 1. We are naming future grown adults and 2. He wants them to have names he feels that they can be proud of and do anything with. We’re on the same page with that.

I think [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is cute on its own and because it’s a more popular name I don’t think people think of it as incomplete. Suggestions for longer names…
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]/[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Elora[/name_f]

I much prefer [name_f]Elle[/name_f] as a full name - it feels complete and sophisticated but also cute.
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] is nice enough too though and [name_f]Elle[/name_f] works as a nickname:)

I prefer [name_f]Elle[/name_f] by itself. or [name_f]Ella[/name_f] without a nickname.

I prefer the sleek, sophisticated [name_f]Elle[/name_f] over [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as [name_f]Ella[/name_f] seems so overused. If necessary, I second the suggestions of pp’s of using a name where you can get the nickname [name_f]Elle[/name_f] although I would maybe avoid [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as it is much more familiar to people than [name_f]Elle[/name_f], and people may call her that rather than [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. There are so many nice suggestions of names that would work just depending of what you like.

I do prefer [name_f]Ella[/name_f] to [name_f]Elle[/name_f] myself, but that being said, [name_f]Elle[/name_f] works just fine as a nn for [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
