My husband and I are expecting our first born girl in [name_u]January[/name_u] and we are struggling with names. Husband is Danish and we both like names of Scandinavian/preferably Danish origin.
I am pretty set on [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] for a middle name as that is my mother’s mother who died relatively young and I want to honor her memory, I know it would mean a lot to my mom.
Our top picks currently for first name:
Solvej (originally thinking [name_f]Solveig[/name_f] but I prefer this spelling, and my understanding is that it is a bit more Danish)
[name_f]Freja[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonja[/name_f] (to me this is a bit more of a ‘familiar’ name which might be nice, but it is not only Scandinavian in origin)
Any strong thoughts for or against any of these? Any other suggestions for first name?
Thanks for the help!
If it’s helpful, our top picks for names had the baby been a boy were Nikolaj, [name_m]Jens[/name_m], [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m].
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] gets my vote.
I do like Solvej but if you live outside of Denmark/Scandinavia, I think you’d have constant spelling and pronunciation issues, especially as J’s at the very end of a name aren’t typical (English speakers). As [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is becoming quite popular in many parts of late, I think [name_f]Freja[/name_f] would be much easier to bear. I also think [name_f]Freja[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] flows better than Solvej [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. [name_f]Sonja[/name_f] is fine, though I just tend to find it very dated, as most [name_f]Sonja[/name_f]/[name_f]Sonya[/name_f]'s I know, and I know quite a few, are in their 40’s.
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is beautiful. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Sonja[/name_f], for some reason the sound has never appealed to me. That’s just a personal preference though. Solvej is lovely but as others have said, it may be difficult for your daughter outside of a Scandinavian country. Another option I think would be nice is [name_f]Liv[/name_f].
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] (in all its variations) is a favourite of mine. I also like the suggestions of [name_f]Anja[/name_f] and [name_f]Svea[/name_f]. Both would work well with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and be somewhat familiar to others of different backgrounds imo.
