I’m due in [name]July[/name] with a girl, who we would love to name [name]Frances[/name] [name]Jane[/name] (first names of both of our grandmothers). The problem is that our last name is French - is [name]Frances[/name] French a tongue twister? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s an alliteration disaster? I still have time, so be honest
Well, yes, I think it’s a tongue twister. Alliteration isn’t a bad thing, but when both names start with “Fr”, it’s a bit much. [name]How[/name] about [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] instead?
It’s not the alliteration or the sound that puts me off it, so much as that [name]Frances[/name] is so close to [name]France[/name] as in the country, and with French that’s just a bit too much. [name]Jane[/name] French is very simple but would be pretty and classic. Does grandmother [name]Frances[/name] have a middle name or even a maiden name that can be used? Or you could honour her using her favourite flower, song, city, etc.
I think it’s close; it could work, and her name could be considered ‘cool’ among her future classmates and coworkers, or it could be a tongue twister, and a headache for her. I personally think [name]Frances[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French is a cool name, but if the tongue twister possibility bothers you, perhaps [name]Francesca[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French or some other variation of [name]Frances[/name] would be a good alternative? Or you could switch the names: [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] French, which is also stunning in my opinion.
I agree that [name]Frances[/name] French is difficult to say and [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] French would be a much better combination. I think if you used another F name (but not Fr-), it could honor but also sound fine. For instance, [name]Felicity[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French or [name]Flora[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French both work well.
[name]One[/name] of my close friends growing up was [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name], first and middle, and I always really loved her name, I think it’s really sweet - is that an option?
My only issue with [name]Jane[/name] as a first name is that our son’s name is [name]James[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] (“jimmy”). It makes me nervous to have two J named kids…seems like a lot of pressure for future siblings. Plus, my dh says [name]Jane[/name] as a fn is a definite ‘no’, so I would have my work cut out for me to convince him otherwise. It seems like I should start circling my back up lists
I might be seeing this through “I really really love all three of these names soooo much” glasses, but I think [name]Frances[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French works just fine. I doubt this’ll work if DH has already vetoed [name]Jane[/name] as a first name, but maybe she could go by her middle name?
I love both names, but personally, I wouldn’t do [name]Frances[/name] French. I’m all for alliteration but it’s more the imagery associated with this name. All I see is the Eiffel [name]Tower[/name] (not that it’s such a bad thing to be associated with I guess).
I think [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] would be the way to go… but then so similar to your son’s name. Seems like you’re in a bit of a pickle!
I love the suggestion of [name]Flora[/name] [name]Jane[/name]!
I really love [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name]!
It’s a risk, [name]Frances[/name] French. [name]Will[/name] she go by a nn? [name]Franny[/name] French is okay. Francy French not so good. You might be better off flipping to [name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name].
I think this is a great time to invoke the “Would I pick this name for myself?” guideline. I would not pick [name]Frances[/name] French for myself. The reason they sound so close is that [name]Frances[/name] means Frenchman. I love [name]Jane[/name] but even if your hubby liked it I think it’s too close to [name]James[/name]; I’ve crossed it off my list for the very same reason as we have a toddler named [name]James[/name]. I think you need to expand your list of names.
[name]Frances[/name] French sounds like [name]France[/name] is french to me.
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] French is lovely.
I agree. [name]Frances[/name] French isn’t a particularly nice instance of alliteration {"[name]France[/name] is French" is what I hear, too}, and while [name]Jane[/name] French is gorgeous, it is awfully close to [name]James[/name]. Definitely a dilemma. I personally wouldn’t even go with an alternative starting with Fr- (like [name]Francesca[/name]), but there might be other diminutives that work. [name]Fannia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] French? Or was there anything else in the short list that might work?
[name]Frances[/name] French is a bit much but I like the meaning so I would still use it personally
It’s not particularly hard to say, but what would worry me is the fact her name would have both ‘[name]France[/name]’ and ‘French’ in it. Almost like a girl called ‘[name]London[/name] English’ if you see what I mean.
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Frances[/name] is just as lovely. It doesn’t solve the problem, but she wouldn’t have to deal with it on a daily basis, and you still get to honour her great grandmother’s with two lovely classics.
[name]Frances[/name] French is, unfortunately, a tongue twister, an alliterative disaster, and redundant… I do love [name]Frances[/name], though! Hearing “[name]Frances[/name] French” sounds like, “[name]France[/name] is French” which would have some people scratching their heads. It also kind of has a cartooney quality, like [name]Francine[/name] Frenski, or something.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Frances[/name], though, so I am quite pained knocking in down in this scenario. Maybe you can push towards the nickname of [name]Frances[/name] as a play off your last name?
It might be a bit alliterative but [name]Frances[/name] French is snappy in a way that [name]Jane[/name] French, a fine name but staid, will never be.
Thank you all so much for your perspectives…I woke up in the middle of the night before posting this thinking of [name]France[/name]/French like [name]England[/name]/English…my husband told me I was over thinking it, but it sounds like I’m not alone! I love hearing your feedback, as we are still so in love with the name it hasn’t been officially removed from the list of possibilities, but slowly dropping in ranking.
