So, for a long time, we were pretty set on naming our daughter (coming in april/may) [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] to honor my mom (Julia) who passed when I was young & [name_f]Grace[/name_f] for my grandmother that just passed (Geraldine).
However, I am just not sold on the name [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I love our son’s name (Henry James) and I really want to feel the same love & passion for our daughter’s name. I’d love some ideas on how to honor [name_f]Julia[/name_f] maybe without using (Julie/Julia) in it. And, maybe we could throw in a way to honor [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] too, my partner’s fav. aunt.
A couple of stipulations - our favorite name is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and we would hands down use this name, but it’s my cousin’s name, so we can’t (though I may ask her mom for permission if we can’t find anything else). If you can’t tell, we like classic and old-feeling names. We don’t like modern/made up names (Julissa, [name_f]Jada[/name_f], Jolie) names like that. And, lastly, we’d love for it to have a literary connotation to it as well.
If your only looking for honor names and are set on using forms of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] have you ever thought of honoring your mum durectly using [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. Here are some options similiar to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] in style:
The only other option that comes to mind is [name_f]Julienne[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], if either of those appeal. Juliana/Julian of Norwich was a famous spiritual writer.
[name_u]Henry[/name_u] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] would be very sweet as sibs!
Thank you for your suggestions. So our kids already have two middle names. The name we like and my wife’s last name. So we probably wouldn’t do two other names as well because that would be 3 names. [name_f]My[/name_f] problem is, I’m not the biggest fan of the name [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. Which is why I’m second-guessing [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I really don’t want her to be called [name_u]Julie[/name_u] or something like that.
I consider [name_f]Julia[/name_f] / [name_u]Julie[/name_u] / [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] all different names, and I think most people do too. So if you aren’t a fan of [name_f]Julia[/name_f], I wouldn’t worry, as I don’t think anyone would call [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] by [name_f]Julia[/name_f] or [name_u]Julie[/name_u] unless she asked to be called that.
But if you’re doubting [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], let’s consider other names. If you can’t use [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] would you consider using [name_f]Josephina[/name_f]? I think this may honor [name_f]Julia[/name_f] even more than [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and you could use the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_u]Jo[/name_u], or other derivatives of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] if you’d like.
Also suggesting [name_f]Julietta[/name_f] or [name_f]Julienne[/name_f]
I have a [name_u]Julie[/name_u] in my family and, if I was going to honour her, I was going to use the middle name [name_f]Jewel[/name_f]. It’s a fun and interesting way to honour a Jul- name, if you don’t actually love [name_u]Julie[/name_u], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] etc!
I think [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is lovely, classic (but not overly popular), and fits well with sibling [name_u]Henry[/name_u]! I really don’t think you would have to worry about so many people shortening it along the way. But, if [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] really doesn’t give you the same good feeling as [name_u]Henry[/name_u], that’s important too. How about something that plays off of Julia’s meaning like [name_u]Juno[/name_u] or [name_f]Jovie[/name_f] (Jovana)?
I‘d reconsider simply using [name_f]Julia[/name_f]! I’m completely biased but it’s a really great name. It’s classic, international, easy to spell, easy to pronounce, has a nice meaning (if you go with youthful other than downy bearded), isn’t overly popular but still fits in with the “ia” name trend (Olivia, [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], etc). Wish I could have used it for my own child! It’s beautiful that it will honour your mother. I think [name_u]Henry[/name_u] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f] make a nice sibset too. I think [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is pretty too and the nn will probably be [name_u]Jules[/name_u] (it seems that is what all the [name_m]Julias[/name_m] and Julies are called anyway). Is [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] or [name_u]Jules[/name_u] something you would consider?
I’d say [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] flows the best and then both sides are honoured.
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is the perfect match for [name_u]Henry[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u].
[name_f]Gillian[/name_f] [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] comes to mind. G for [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] (and some of the letters) and -lia sound in the middle for [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. It’s a stretch but the intent is there.
[name_f]Varina[/name_f] has the same meaning as [name_f]Barbara[/name_f]. [name_f]Varina[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Varina[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_f]Varina[/name_f] [name_f]Judith[/name_f] - [name_f]Varina[/name_f] is a novel by the same author as Cold Mountain…
St. [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] protects against fire. So maybe that sparks an idea?
I second [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] / [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]!
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is lovely, but using [name_u]Josie[/name_u] on its own could work too!
I also like the [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] spelling.
