Back again! [name_m]Hi[/name_m] all, I’m working through my girl’s list and trying to narrow down which combos I like best. Today’s name is [name_f]Madita[/name_f]. With my American accent, I am pronouncing this name as “muh-DEE-duh”. This is an uncommon name that I never really see discussed anywhere. I really like how the beginning of this name has a familiar look/sound (thanks to [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], et al.) but the name has an international-sounding twist to it.
I am having trouble deciding which kind of name to pair with it. I feel like a lot of these may work phonetically and have good flow, but which ones vibe the best with [name_f]Madita[/name_f]? Which combo elevates this name and makes it truly stand out? I’m sorry for the long list, but I’m definitely having some trouble narrowing down my [name_f]Madita[/name_f] combos!

I’m just not sure that they mesh with [name_f]Madita[/name_f] for me.

I really like [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] and [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]. I grew up reading “Madita”, the [name_m]German[/name_m] translation of [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren’s “Madicken”, so middle names that have a more European vibe feel most natural with [name_f]Madita[/name_f].

I’m not sure who adds the name meanings on NB but @katinka , as [name_f]Madita[/name_f] is already in the database, perhaps the team can add that it’s a [name_m]German[/name_m] nickname of [name_f]Margarete[/name_f], so means “pearl”, specifically created for the above-mentioned book in 1961 but which has become a main-stream name since then.

I like most of these because of how beautiful they sound with [name_f]Madita[/name_f], and they add a touch of nature to it. I also liked Thaissa but as you stated it is rhymey with [name_f]Madita[/name_f] and doesn’t have a good flow. [name_u]Holland[/name_u], [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] and [name_u]Prairie[/name_u] are good ones too. I don’t [name_u]Skye[/name_u] is too simple, it can be really great if paired with the right name, and I think [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] is beautiful.

[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren Books are very popular in Europe and have been since they were first published; however, some names were translated because the original names sounded too close to [name_m]German[/name_m] words or, in at least once case, we’re too close to the title of another famous book series at the time.
For example, [name_m]Emil[/name_m] of Lönneberga was changed to [name_u]Michel[/name_u] of Lönneberga because [name_m]Emil[/name_m] and the detectives was a very famous series at the time targeting the same demographic and publishers thought people might confuse the two).
[name_f]Kaisa[/name_f], the main character of a picture book, was changed to [name_f]Polly[/name_f], likely because [name_f]Kaisa[/name_f] sounds like the [name_m]German[/name_m] word [name_m]Kaiser[/name_m] “emperor”.
[name_f]Madicken[/name_f] is, afaik, a name Lindgren made up. The sisters in the books are actually called [name_f]Margareta[/name_f] and [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] but are only called [name_f]Madicken[/name_f] and [name_f]Lisabet[/name_f] by everyone.
However, in [name_m]German[/name_m] “dick” means “fat” so the translator came up with her own nickname creation, similar to Lindgren, and names her [name_f]Madita[/name_f].
One of my favourite quotes from the story is…
”Mama, what do you want most of all in life?”
“Two very sweet and well-behaved little girls” says [name_f]Mama[/name_f].
[name_f]Madita[/name_f] starts to look a little frightened and starts to cry “and where should [name_f]Lisabet[/name_f] and I go then”?
I could very much identify with her character as a little girl

I find that something about [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] clashes. It’s partly the a-A transition, I think, but also a clash of vibes and associations I have: [name_f]Madita[/name_f] being pretty cool and [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] fairly dated. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the [name_u]French[/name_u] spelling though!

@OpheliaFlora I agree that [name_f]Madita[/name_f] definitely has a distinct European feel to it. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to lean into that and choose European-sounding names or not, but I think that might be the best way to accentuate [name_f]Madita[/name_f]!

@heartwings @OpheliaFlora did a lovely job of explaining the origins of the name. I originally discovered it on a singer (a relatively obscure Austrian singer/actress of Bosnian descent; she was born [name_f]Edita[/name_f] and [name_f]Madita[/name_f] is her stage name). Although I like the singer, I wouldn’t necessarily use this name as a purposeful nod to her; she’s just how I discovered the name.
@EdgeOfTheMeadow really appreciate your opinions! I am definitely feeling [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] and [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] a lot. I also see what you’re saying about the clash of vibes in [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Aimee[/name_f]. I am pushing for an [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] revival, though, lol, and I do love 80s/90s names. I actually had [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] on this list too but took that one out at the last minute when making this topic. It just didn’t feel as “right” as the other combos that I posted. [name_f]Madita[/name_f] [name_f]Roselore[/name_f] is really pretty too! Haha this is why it’s so hard to pick just one!
