Help with meaningful name for baby girl

[name]Hi[/name],
This is my first post.

We are trying to come up with a name for our baby girl. She is due [name]July[/name] 4th. We are very unique people, and want a fairly unique name, but not anything totally completely out there. That said, I was leaning towards a more unique name for the mn and a more palatable name for the first name.

We met while doing 4 months of volunteer relief work in Biloxi, MS after Hurricane [name]Katrina[/name]. I actually grew up in Biloxi, but hadn’t been back in years (moved to San [name]Francisco[/name], and now [name]Lake[/name] [name]Tahoe[/name]). Basically we met there, fell in love, and I moved to [name]Lake[/name] [name]Tahoe[/name] where he lived.

That said, I’d like to maybe honor that story, by using it to help choose the middle name. I was thinking a name having something to do with a weather, or the south, or Mississippi, or somethign like that.

He really likes a soft sounding name, and his first and favorites that he has thought of are [name]Alicia[/name] or [name]Elisha[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Sasha[/name]. I also came up with [name]Sasha[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Cassidy[/name], or [name]Cassia[/name]. We also liked (me more than him) some more unique ones like [name]Hazel[/name], or [name]Tallulah[/name], but if we chose one of those for the first name, we’d like to pick something very girly and normalish for the middle.

I’ve actually just really started to like Biloxi as a middle name, since it is where we met, but another couple who are great friends of ours also met there and got married and have a little girl and they gave her the middle name Pearlington for the same reason. Pearlington is the name of one of the second town we did relief work in and that is where they’d spent the most time. I don’t want to be a copycat, but we have the same reasons for wanting to use something like that.

Here is our complete name list with the fns and mns all mixed together.

[name]Do[/name] you guys have any feelings about any of these, or any combinations, or additions??

[name]Sasha[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Lola[/name])
[name]Sadie[/name]

[name]Sasha[/name]- I really don’t like this name. I’m sorry. I couldn’t tell you why.
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Lola[/name])- This is fantastic!! [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Sadie[/name]- Cute name, but technically it’s a nn for [name]Sarah[/name].
[name]Savannah[/name]- Getting really popular.
Makita- I think you already know why not to use this.
[name]Alicia[/name] or [name]Elisha[/name]- Sounds a bit dated, but that could very well just be me.
[name]Amelia[/name]- Beautiful name.
[name]Cassia[/name]- I like this one. Original way to get the nn [name]Cass[/name] or [name]Cassie[/name].
[name]Cassidy[/name]- Sounds dated.
[name]Avalon[/name]- Very pretty name!
[name]Kylah[/name]- VERY dated.
[name]Rhianna[/name]- I just think of the singer. Could work, though.
[name]Amelie[/name]- Very, very pretty.
[name]Chloe[/name]- Hugely popular.
[name]Shiloh[/name]- For a girl? I’m not feeling it. Plus, starbaby name.
[name]Ashlyn[/name]- It’s like [name]Ashley[/name], only updated. Could work I guess. Hmm.
[name]Lily[/name]- My name! Very popular, but pretty!
[name]Lilian[/name]- See above.
[name]Sariah[/name]- I thought this was [name]Sarah[/name] at first. I don’t knwo how to pronounce it.
[name]Indigo[/name]- Great name. Definitely unique.
[name]Stella[/name]- All the “ella” names are getting popular, but I love this name.
[name]Phoenix[/name]- Might be a stretch for a girl, but I like it.
[name]Autumn[/name]- Beautiful name. Not a lot of them, but the name is totally accepeted.
[name]Riley[/name]- I like this.
[name]Hazel[/name]- Pretty.
[name]Blue[/name]- [name]Love[/name] this name!!!
[name]Reese[/name]- I always think of [name]Reese[/name] Witherspoon. Sorry.
[name]Magnolia[/name]- Beautiful name, with the great nn [name]Maggie[/name].
Biloxi- Definitely tells a story. MN only, though.
[name]Tallulah[/name]- I really like this name.
[name]Storm[/name]- Not the greatest implications.

I love names that have personal connections. I think it would be fine to use Biloxi as a mn, and it wouldn’t be copying–you’re not using Pearlington, right? That said, for the first name I love [name]Cassia[/name] far more than [name]Cassidy[/name]. I also like [name]Sasha[/name] fine, and it’s good that both of you like the name, but it has a frilly connotation in my mind. That one’s your pick though.

I think you should go with Biloxi as the middle name. It’s very cute in the middle and obviously is the name that triggers the most significant associations for you. It seems like any other middle name would be settling for second best.
Using Biloxi, though, I think automatically rules out any first names ending with an ee sound ([name]Amelie[/name]) as well as city names ([name]Savannah[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name]).
My vote, then, is [name]Amelia[/name] Biloxi!

[name]Hi[/name], Mishka!

So, crossing out the place names, names that don’t work with Biloxi (I think you should definitely use this as an mn!), the less unique names, and the names that are too “out there” with Biloxi, you have:

[name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Kylah[/name]
[name]Rhianna[/name]
[name]Shiloh[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name]

From those, I like the following best:

[name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name]

Since they all have normal-ish nn’s ([name]Cassie[/name], [name]Maggie[/name]/[name]Nola[/name], [name]Tally[/name]/[name]Ally[/name]/[name]Lula[/name]/[name]Lulu[/name]), I wouldn’t say that they’re too “out there”. [name]How[/name] are you pronouncing [name]Cassia[/name]? I prefer cah-see-a, but I think that cash-a would be better with Biloxi. [name]Tallulah[/name] Bankhead isn’t exactly the best role model… From these three, the full name [name]Magnolia[/name] is the most “out there”, in my opinion.

In summary, I would choose [name]Cassia[/name] Biloxi, [name]Magnolia[/name] Biloxi, or [name]Tallulah[/name] Biloxi depending on:

  1. The one that works best with your surname.
  2. The pronunciation.
  3. The nicknames.
  4. Whether the name is too “out there” or not.
  5. If possible namesakes bother you.

If you decide against Biloxi as a mn, please ignore this post!

Good luck!

Ooh I love [name]Cassia[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name]! Biloxi is adorable in the middle and since it has so much meaning for you you should definitely use it! [name]Charlotte[/name] Biloxi is a tad place name-y but I like it and [name]Charlotte[/name] is such a classic name (my sister’s name is [name]Robin[/name] [name]Polly[/name]… a bit bird heavy, but no one ever notices except the close family). Ones I think go well with Biloxi:

[name]Cassia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Sasha[/name] Biloxi
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Lola[/name]) Biloxi
[name]Sadie[/name] Biloxi
[name]Amelia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Cassia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Amelie[/name] Biloxi
[name]Chloe[/name] Biloxi
[name]Shiloh[/name] Biloxi
[name]Lilian[/name] Biloxi
[name]Stella[/name] Biloxi
[name]Autumn[/name] Biloxi
[name]Hazel[/name] Biloxi
[name]Magnolia[/name] Biloxi

With my favorites being:
[name]Cassia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Charlotte[/name] Biloxi
[name]Magnolia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Amelia[/name] Biloxi
[name]Lillian[/name] Biloxi
[name]Autumn[/name] Biloxi

I love the sentiment behind your choices. My [name]FAVORITE[/name] name is easily [name]Magnolia[/name] and it carries the Mississippi meaning with it. I think then also using Biloxi would be redundant.

Here are some combos I like…

[name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Blue[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name] (is there a meaningful family name?)
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]

What about [name]Piper[/name], nn [name]Pippi[/name] - reminds me of Mississippi -
[name]Piper[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]

Congratulations on your LO!

[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Amelie[/name] nn [name]Lola[/name] - love it!

I think Biloxi could be a great middle name.

I think your story is great. Finding love in the middle of a disaster. I would concentrate on that aspect rather than the storm. It’s very inspirational

[name]Charity[/name] - I assume [name]Charity[/name] is important to y’all, and it’s what brought you together
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Dara[/name] - Compassion
[name]Tempest[/name] - I prefer this to storm
[name]Bora[/name] - Hurricane
Corentina - Hurricane
[name]Magnolia[/name] - Mississippi State [name]Flower[/name]

[name]Hadley[/name] [name]Cressida[/name] - meadow, gold; image: finding e/o like finding a golden ring in a large meadow
[name]Ashley[/name] [name]Phoenix[/name] - image: rising from the ashes (phoenix birds, plus “ash”)
[name]Iris[/name] [name]Orabella[/name] (see meaning below)
[name]Ainsley[/name] [name]Renee[/name] (see below)
[name]Aurora[/name] [name]Oceana[/name] (dawn [after the] ocean)

names and meanings:
[name]Aurora[/name] or [name]Roxanne[/name] - dawn
[name]Renee[/name] - reborn
[name]Marissa[/name] - of the sea
[name]Ainsley[/name] - one’s own meadow, (to me meaning what you found in your back yard per se)

Other beautiful nature names:
[name]Loretta[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]

Other names I thought you might like:
[name]Seraphina[/name] - fiery, ardent
[name]Naomi[/name] - my joy, my delight
[name]Arabella[/name]/[name]Orabella[/name] - beautiful altar (ora means prayer, bella means beautiful, so to me it also means beautiful prayer)
[name]Iris[/name] - flower name, but also means “rainbow”, which can be biblical almost, if you look to the story of [name]Noah[/name] and the flooding of the earth

Let me know what you think. God bless.

(Afterthought: [name]Iris[/name] [name]Oceane[/name] or “rainbow after the ocean”)

[name]Love[/name], [name]Love[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]!!! My vote would be for [name]Magnolia[/name] Biloxi!!! [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Maggie[/name] as well!!

While I understand the meaning the name Biloxi will have for you, I don’t think it is suited as a middle name. It sounds very medical, and definitly like a perscription drug.

What about going with the weather thing? Somthing like [name]Tempest[/name] would be unique and has a nice sound to it.

What about [name]Pearl[/name] instead of Pearlington? It is very pretty and can stand on it’s own without being a DIRECT reference to your union with your partner. I think you may find that naming a child in this manner will be less relevant in a few years time as the focus changes to her as a unique individual. In my opinion, a beautiful and solid name for your child is tops. If you can achieve both, great.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Cassia[/name] ([name]Cash[/name]-a?) and [name]Magnolia[/name]. [name]Love[/name], love [name]Nola[/name] as a nn for [name]Magnolia[/name].

[name]Gale[/name]/[name]Gail[/name] is a windy name.

You could even go with Nightingale, after [name]Florence[/name], since she was a hero like you.

WOW Thanks everyone! I love all the advice here.

I’m not heartset on Biloxi for the mn, I actually just thought of it recently. Originally I had wanted [name]Storm[/name] as the mn, but as time went on I began to think it was a bit heavy. I don’t think she necessarily has to have a name related to how we met, but it was just a way to give her name some meaning. Neither of us have any family names we are attracted to…

I do like [name]Magnolia[/name] quite a bit, but wouldn’t likely use it with Biloxi as we want her to have a soft name like [name]Sasha[/name] or [name]Savannah[/name] or something like that for either fn or mn.

[name]Cassia[/name] I would pronounce [name]Cass[/name] - ee- uh. I really like that one.

We likes [name]Sasha[/name] [name]Riley[/name], or [name]Savannah[/name] [name]Reese[/name] but we work away from each other a lot of the time so haven’t had a lot of sit down time to figure this out.

I’m afraid to pick a name that is climbing in popularity like [name]Savannah[/name] or [name]Charlotte[/name]. [name]Sasha[/name] at least is pretty far down the list, closer to 400 or so…

Anyway, any more ideas out there would be welcome!

And thanks so very much!
Mishka

[name]How[/name] about [name]Magnolia[/name] as a mn? It has that southern charm and is also unqiue. You also mentioned Pearlington, but why not just [name]Pearl[/name]?

[name]Sasha[/name]- This is a boys name to me. I know in the US it is more commonly used on girls but I still love it for boys.
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Lola[/name])- I love this one with the nn [name]Lola[/name]. [name]Lola[/name] is actually my grandmas name and I never imagined it would come back in style. [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] would be lovely.
[name]Sadie[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sadie[/name] it is just so cute. [name]Sadie[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name] maybe?
[name]Savannah[/name]- Very southern and sweet. [name]Savannah[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]?
[name]Alicia[/name] or [name]Elisha[/name]- I went to school with a lot of [name]Alicia[/name]'s so this seems very 80s to me.
[name]Amelia[/name]- [name]Love[/name] [name]Amelia[/name].
[name]Cassia[/name]- hmmm I’m not a fan. It seems like it would get confused for [name]Cassie[/name] a lot.
[name]Cassidy[/name]- I dont like this.
[name]Avalon[/name]- Reminds me of [name]Avon[/name].
[name]Kylah[/name]- I dont like K names, they are too trendy and common.
[name]Rhianna[/name]- Pretty.
[name]Amelie[/name]- I love this name! [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] would be lovely.
[name]Chloe[/name]- Too trendy
[name]Shiloh[/name]- Hmm, I still think of the dog, and [name]Angelina[/name] [name]Jolie[/name].
[name]Lilian[/name]- sweet, but very popular.
[name]Stella[/name]- I love this name.

Off your list I like [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Amelie[/name], and [name]Stella[/name] the best. My favorite combos being [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Sadie[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name], [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] and [name]Stella[/name] [name]Pearl[/name].
