Hey everyone! My brother finally decided he’ll learn English deeply. So I thought having an English name would inspire(?) him to learn more. I brought an English boys names book and told him to pick one, but he vetoed almost every name in the book. He previously liked
And nothing more… He said he wants a ‘cool’ name, preferably a not old fashioned/too religious (See [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]… oh my…) name. Please drop me any cool names you can think of! Thanks a lot
Is there an English version of the name he wears now or one that is somewhat close as that may be easiest to get used to. Otherwise, I think a lot of the names that are high on Nameberry popularity charts may be a good place for him to start because he may not be familiar with many English names.
@whitegardenia Thanks, I’ll tell him that! And sadly he doesn’t have an English version of his name. And if you spell his name in English, he’ll get many many different pronounciations and spellings, so we’re still finding names.
@tfzolghadr It’s Korean and thank you for the suggestions! He likes [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] best.
@morning_glory I agree, [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] is so cool! And thanks
@boyandgirl [name_m]Zane[/name_m] is pronounced same as [name_f]Jane[/name_f] here… More weird thing is [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is a unisex name in my country haha. [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] is handsome!
I don’t see anything wrong with [name_m]Leo[/name_m] or [name_u]Hunter[/name_u]. [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] is a bit much, in my opinion, and given that Z ends up sounding a little like J, he’d sound like Juice.
My kids attended an international school in Europe for several years, and had many Korean friends who had taken English names. If I were in the position to take a name from a foreign language or culture, I think I’d want it to be something that felt like “me.” I think that would mean it would either sound similar to my own name, or would have a meaning that I felt fit my personality. I think I’d also like to have a name that didn’t stand out among my peers in that foreign language. Some of the Korean kids in my kids’ school had chosen names for themselves that were popular in my generation or in my parents’ generation, and not in their own generation. Instead of picking something that a mom would give her baby now, I’d pick something that other teenagers have now.
So, again, [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] fit his description of what he wants: a not old fashioned, not religious name. I think he’s on the right track; I think he should find something that’s rather classic, not too trendy, and fits in his age bracket. Here are a few others from me and my teenagers:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know why he likes [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_u]Hunter[/name_u]? [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] feel very outdoorsy to me, [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] is cool, but very out there and not (imo) the best namesake! Does he like that he’s a god? In which case I’d suggest [name_m]Thor[/name_m] and maybe [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. Is it because its a Z name, in which case how does he feel about [name_m]Zane[/name_m] or [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] or [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]?
