So, I have been married to my husband for three years now and for the past two we’ve been trying to get pregnant. Well, it finally happened! We just found out we’re having a boy and a girl. The only downfall is that we don’t agree on names at all. This is his second marriage and he has two daughters from his first, [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f]. He wants to stick with the southern route, but I’m not sure I want to. I love my step-daughters, but I just don’t want to name my daughter [name_f]Sue[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] or [name_f]Maybelle[/name_f]. When my sister was having a hard time picking a name with her husband she came here and they were able to find a compromise. So I was hoping that you guys could help me find a girl name and a boy name that was southern, but traditional? I like names like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. He likes names like [name_f]Sue[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] and [name_m]Colton[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something in the middle that doesn’t sound incredibly southern, I also want them to kind of fit together.
Hmm … this is a bit tough.
For your son I think a more distinguished type of Southern name might work.
What about:
[name_u]Ashton[/name_u]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Beauregard[/name_m]
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]
[name_m]Jefferson[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_u]Sterling[/name_u]
[name_u]Vernon[/name_u]
For a girl, maybe a Southern place name would work as an alternative to the double barrel name:
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
Some nature names strike me as southern:
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
Other girls names that make me think of the south either because of authors, actors, singers or characters with those names:
[name_f]Della[/name_f]
[name_f]Dixie[/name_f]
[name_u]Flannery[/name_u]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_u]Shelby[/name_u]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_m]Brantley[/name_m]
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
I love southern names, but your husband has kind of taken it to a whole new level! I think his are more vintage hillbilly. There are great nickname opportunities with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about:
[name_f]Sally[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Lizzie[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-double barrel [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Norah[/name_f]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Clay[/name_m]
[name_m]Boone[/name_m]
[name_m]Cordell[/name_m]
[name_u]Grady[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]
