Hello! Currently 7months pregnant with baby no.2, sex unknown!
We have 2yr old called [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
Current favourite girls name is [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], what do you think? We would shorten to ‘ottie’ as a nickname, not a big fan of [name_f]Tilly[/name_f], so but worried people might call her that?
Middle names we’re thinking [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] which are both family names.
Other girls names we like;
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] (husband also likes [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f] and I do like it too but I’m worried it sounds too posh/wannabe?! Thoughts please!!)
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (not keen on [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_m]Jose[/name_m] though)
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] ([name_f]Pippa[/name_f]/[name_m]Pip[/name_m])
Boys names
I like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Austin[/name_m] and middle name would be [name_m]Richard[/name_m]
Husband likes [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], but I’m worried they are a bit boring?!
With [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], my favorites are [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] ([name_f]Pippa[/name_f]) and [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is a great combo. With [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], I like [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] best. While I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], there’s a strong possibility that she would be called [name_u]Jo[/name_u] unless you have another nn for her ([name_u]Josie[/name_u] maybe?). [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is more unusual, but [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] is cute. A more classic name that might work for you and is great with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]-- [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Audie[/name_u]). Since you seem to like the aw-sound, there’s also [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Maud[/name_f], [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], Dahlia, and [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] that might work for you as well.
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] is my favorite from your boy names. What about [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]? You could also use [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Eli[/name_m], or [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] to honor [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and combine that with [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is a great name, but I don’t like the R-ending with [name_m]Richard[/name_m] as a mn. What about [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Osmond[/name_m], Orwell, [name_m]Osric[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], or [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] instead? [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_u]Maurice[/name_u], [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]/[name_m]Laurent[/name_m], [name_m]Amaury[/name_m], and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] are more possibilities with the aw- sound.
I’m not a super big fan of [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], mostly because I haven’t quite figured out how to pronounce it yet. I do think, if this is the one you end up going with, [name_u]Ottie[/name_u] is a much cuter nickname that [name_f]Tilly[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for a middle name! I’m not sure it flows with [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], but it definitely would with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is one of my favorites, and I think [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] is fabulous; not too “posh” at all.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] nickname [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is quite cute. Not a personal favorite of mine, but still nice.
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] ([name_f]Pippa[/name_f]/[name_m]Pip[/name_m]) is awesome. If you didn’t have [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] on your list, this would be my favorite.
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] is the best of your boys names, and I like the suggestion of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] as well.
To clarify in finale, these are how I would personally rank your options.
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]
1.5 This is where I would rank [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] if it were an option
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_m]Harry[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] (I love the name, but the R at the end of [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and at the beginning of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] overlap so it doesn’t flow too well)
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is stunning. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are both lovely; I probably marginally prefer [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f], but maybe just because I’ve heard so many people say “Oh, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is my/my mum’s/my sister’s/etc. middle name!”
In my experience people don’t usually automatically shorten something unless it’s quite long or unless they’re kids (at school, for example, an [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] could well be shortened), but that could just be me. If that possibility puts you off, you could maybe consider [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f] or [name_f]Ottilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Odile[/name_f] . . . but I know they’re not the same as [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] so you probably won’t be too enchanted at the thought of using them instead. But I could be wrong.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] go together amazingly.
Not too keen on [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f] - I find it a little smoosh-y and modern - but for some reason [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] sounds classic and beautiful.
NNs for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] could be [name_u]Josie[/name_u], Sephy, Phina, Phin (as in [name_m]Fin[/name_m]) . . . not so keen on the sibset [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] though. ? Maybe it’s that I don’t think they complement each other as well as [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] together. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], refreshing change. Might just pip [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]!
Boys - well, [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] sounds much better than [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] or [name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_f]IMO[/name_f], but doesn’t quite ‘fit’ with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]'s style. [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] in contrast would both work with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
However, my favourite option for your boy name would be [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] seems the perfect compromise between [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] could always be a nickname. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] make a wonderful sibset. And you could possibly save [name_u]Theo[/name_u] (or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]) for another time. (Note: [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] are absolutely perfect together.)
So, my vote goes to [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] (nn. [name_f]Pippa[/name_f])/[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] (possible nn. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]). (But I would just use [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].) If [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] isn’t an option, my next choice would be [name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]/[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m], although the Rs at the end of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and beginning of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] run into each other a little.
Since you’re not sold on [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], I agree with previous poster that [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is a wonderful compromise. It has the same vibe and feeling that I get from [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
Boy Suggestions - sorry for any repeats
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
As for the girl choices, I prefer [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgianna[/name_f] for a sister to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
Girl Suggestions - again sorry if I repeat other poster suggestions
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
I also have a [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and adore Ottillie but hubby said no. It’s gorgeous. You might like some of my other girl names maybe
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] nn [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
I would advise a bit against [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] as it turns out to be one of those names that is beautiful on paper, but very difficult to wear… I know because my best friend’s daughter was [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] for almost 5 months of her life and no one could properly pronounce or spell it without guidance and correcting, to the point where the parents became deeply frustrated with the name. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is now [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and everyone is happy with that. Of course if you really love it you should take my advice with a grain of salt.
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] is a name that I considered when expecting my first son and I love it for it’s literary references, but also because it feels regal and feminine, but can be shortened to the boyish [name_u]Georgie[/name_u], or to [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], if that suits your fancy. It does feel very posh though, even a bit more than [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], which isn’t so much posh as she is sweet and friendly.
I think my favorite from your list is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I think it sounds jovial and goes perfectly with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. If you are not fond of [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_u]Joey[/name_u] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u], you can call her [name_f]Fina[/name_f] (what my friend calls her daughter). [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] would be my second choice for you.
I love [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] but I would consider PP’s advice re people mixing up the name. You know your own community and whether that is > or < likely.
Phillipa nn Pippa with either middle would be my next choice.
Hugo Richard is also great.
SUGGESTIONS:
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (in between [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f], and also named after her big sister)
[name_f]Odilia[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (another O name)
BOY NAME:
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (mixed [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u])
I can’t say I care for [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]. But [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is lovely! Between [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m].
I am personally not a fan of [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f].
I absolutely love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] together!
For a boy I like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
[name_f]Georgianna[/name_f], all the way. Reminds me of [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, who is a pretty damn cool historical figure. She pronounced her name “Georgayna.” [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f] is posh, but not in a snotty way at all.
For girls, I love [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] but [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] takes the crown for me. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] make the cutest sibset ever, in my opinion. And the nickname [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] is awesome.
I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], but I also know that it would tend to be shortened to [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and you clearly stated that you don’t like it, so I’ll say pass on it.
For boys, my favourite with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] but it doesn’t flow well with [name_m]Richard[/name_m] because of the double r-sound. The one that flows better with [name_m]Richard[/name_m] for me is [name_m]Austin[/name_m], but I don’t think it goes well with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. As others suggest before, [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] is lovely and goes really well with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
