Help with Silas?

All over nameberry I have seen [name_m]Silas[/name_m], but pronounced as Sylahs. My older brothers highschool bestfriend’s name was [name_m]Silas[/name_m], but said like Seelahs. Was this just his family mis-pronouncing it, or does anyone else say it like that? Also, which do you prefer? Thanks so much!

I’ve never heard it pronounced any other way than Sigh-lus.

What was their heritage? Maybe it’s pronounced differently in different languages?

Agreed; I’ve only ever heard SYE-las, and that’s how I prefer it. I love [name_m]Silas[/name_m]! It used to be in my top 2. Still love it, but it’s not on my list anymore. ATM, anyway.

I was thinking the same thing; maybe SEE-las would be the pronunciation in Spanish, or Hebrew?

It may be a cultural difference in pronunciation where your brother’s friend had a cultural reason to say it that way. Some cultures pronounce [name_m]Silas[/name_m] as SEE-lahs whereas as in English the standard is as you pronounce it. (And I say this with the knowledge from the show, Weeds. At one point, the character, [name_m]Silas[/name_m], moved to Denmark and the Danes say his name as SEE-lahs).

Hmm, not sure what his heritage was! I didnt think about that!

I’ve only ever heard sigh-lus.

I’ve only heard it pronounced Sye-lus, which I think sounds better anyway.

SYE-las.

I love it <3

I say it like you do, and prefer that pronunciation.

Like others have said, it’s most likely a cultural thing.

I have a little [name_m]Silas[/name_m] (usually called [name_m]Sy[/name_m]) and no one has ever pronounced it differently than [name_m]Sy[/name_m]-las
