I absolutely love the name [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] for a little girl.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f]. 90% of people call me my full name [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] and some also call me [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. There are three in my life who call me “[name_f]Katie[/name_f]”- my one Uncle who lives more than 4 hours away from me, my brother in law and my father-in-law (both who live close to me and I see often).
I would like to use [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] as my new daughters name, but our family is big on “nicknames”- everyone has a nickname and it is often used more than their full name. I looked up the possible nicknames for [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] and found most commonly people use “[name_f]Cadie[/name_f] /[name_f]Cady[/name_f]”- pronouncing it like [name_f]Katie[/name_f].
Here are my two questions:
1.) Can you think of any other nicknames for [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] other than [name_f]Katie[/name_f] that are feminine? (I saw ‘[name_u]Denny[/name_u]’ listed online…not my style for a nickname for a little girl) I know my family and this little one will end up with some sort of nickname no matter what, so I want to think ahead.
2.) Is it still ok to use [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] if people do call her [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Kaitie[/name_f]) or is it too similar to my name? I don’t want people thinking I was naming her after me or anything like that, we just think it is a beautiful name.
Any thoughts or opinions would be very very much appreciated.
The only other nicknames I can think of are [name_f]Cece[/name_f] (especially useful if mn starts with C), [name_f]Dee[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], Dance (idk), and maybe something more reminiscent of a pet name, like [name_f]Coco[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Cady[/name_f] next to [name_f]Katie[/name_f] would be that big a problem, it might be a sweet connection to your daughter in the future. [name_f]Do[/name_f] either way works!
[name_f]Cay[/name_f] - kind of a cute vintage name - Kay is what my grandma went by.
[name_f]Adie[/name_f] - Like [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] without the C - think Aidy [name_m]Bryant[/name_m] from SNL
[name_u]Casey[/name_u] - I think it works because both it and [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] start with [name_f]Cay[/name_f] and have the S sound near the end.
[name_f]Caddie[/name_f] - an old-fashioned nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], but it could do. Maybe even Cassie.
[name_f]My[/name_f] mom and sister have had to deal with some confusion being a [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] and a [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], even though my mom goes by [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] and my sister is [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/ [name_f]Katie[/name_f] ([name_f]Katie[/name_f] only for family). People thought my sister was named for my mom although she was actually named for a great-grandmother. Oh, and I also had a grandma named [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f], aunt [name_f]Cathy[/name_f], and cousin [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]. From lots of experience, I can say that I would avoid two nicknames that are so close to each other because it makes family events kind of crazy. I wouldn’t think a [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] was named after [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] but I’d think a [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] was named for a [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f] if I only heard the names and didn’t see them written. I wouldn’t avoid [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] but I would look for NNs other than [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] if possible.
What about spelling it as [name_f]Kadence[/name_f]/[name_f]Kaydence[/name_f], and using [name_u]Kay[/name_u] as a nn? [name_f]Kiki[/name_f] would also be usable if you go for the K spelling.
I think [name_f]Cady[/name_f] and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] are too close. In my(Southeastern American) accent they are exactly the same. [name_u]Kay[/name_u]/[name_f]Cay[/name_f] and [name_f]Cece[/name_f] are my favorite nicknames.
In your position, I would only use [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] if there was a nickname that I loved too. [name_f]Caddie[/name_f] is a cute one imo but isn’t as natural as [name_f]Cady[/name_f]. But you really have to love the nickname as much as the full name to make it work, in my experience with inlaws who shorten everything.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a middle name in mind? If it is something short, like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Hope[/name_f], for example, then you could have the nickname use the middle too. Like [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Cadie[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f]. That way she won’t get mixed up with your name.
