Help with these 2 names

I thought we had decided on our boy’s name, but now I’m having some doubts and there are 2 other names lingering in my mind.

My husband thinks the name Kaladin is awesome. I have no issues with the name except the nickname [name_m]Kal[/name_m]. I can’t stand it. Can anyone else think of a nickname that would work?

My husband also loves the name [name_u]Kai[/name_u]. We were considering the name [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], nickname [name_u]Kai[/name_u], but have opted out as it just didn’t feel right. Any other names that you could use [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as a nickname? We prefer something not too common.

Edit: Is Kai as a nickname for Kaladin pushing it?

Maybe [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] or [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]?

As far as Kaladin, maybe nickname [name_f]Addy[/name_f]? I met a boy [name_u]Addison[/name_u] nn [name_f]Addy[/name_f] once and I fell in love. You can also call him by his full name, Kaladin, there’s nothing that says someone has to have a nickname. But you will not be able to control when he gets older what his friends and peers call him…

[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] is one of my favorite boy names, especially nicknamed [name_u]Kai[/name_u].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_u]Kai[/name_u] is not overly popular.

My family is just big on nicknames and I’d prefer not to have a kid named [name_m]Kal[/name_m]. Lol

Would [name_u]Kai[/name_u] from Kaladin be pushing it?

I think it will be very difficult to avoid the nickname [name_m]Kal[/name_m] if you name him Kaladin. I would go straight to [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as it’s a name that can stand on its own, and a very nice name.

My first thought was “why not Kaladin nicknamed [name_u]Kai[/name_u]” . . . I think it would work, especially if he was announced as “[name_u]Kai[/name_u], short for Kaladin” rather than “Kaladin, nickname [name_u]Kai[/name_u]”. Because if you did the latter you might get people thinking they’d heard wrong and saying [name_m]Kal[/name_m] to be safe, whereas with the former I’d be willing to bet it’d stick.

Personally I think [name_u]Kai[/name_u] is the best option. It’s definitely similar enough to work!

The only other names I can think of are [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m], Caillou, and Kainoa.

I second the suggestion of [name_u]Cairo[/name_u]! It wears really well for a younger kid, but with [name_u]Kai[/name_u]/[name_u]Cai[/name_u] and [name_f]Ro[/name_f] as nicknames it can grow, too.

I think trying to force [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as a nickname for Kaladin will be hard… [name_m]Kal[/name_m] will be inevitable no matter how hard you try, even if you convince family otherwise. My family are nicknamers too and there has been serious name regret and caution with all of us now because of it! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t invite the opportunity for it!!
