Here’s the problem, we love the name [name_m]Harold[/name_m] nn “[name_m]Harry[/name_m]”. It’s the given name of my husband’s father and grandfather. But, our last name is Dillow. [name_m]Harry[/name_m] Dillow is just asking for trouble in the teasing department right?
Other options we like are [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m] (which is also a family name and our nephews middle name), [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and we’d love to use some version of [name_m]Alan[/name_m]/[name_m]Allen[/name_m].
I agree that [name_m]Harry[/name_m] Dillow is not ideal. [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is one of my favorite names! but needs a certain type of last name to avoid the lame jokes. I think I would also nix [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] because of [name_u]Theo[/name_u] Dillow. [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is handsome though.
I quite like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] for you because it has those Ancient Germanic roots like [name_m]Harold[/name_m] (“peaceful ruler” vs. “powerful ruler”) plus adorable nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], much like [name_m]Harry[/name_m], but [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] Dillow works much better.
You might also like [name_m]Callum[/name_m] (contains the first half of [name_m]Allen[/name_m]). [name_u]Cal[/name_u] manages cool & vintage at the same time, I think.
An H-name (as a nod to [name_m]Harold[/name_m]) that might work is [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. It’s classic, simple, handsome - but when he’s little, “[name_m]Huey[/name_m]” would be cute too.
Others that appealed to me for you…apologies for repeats…
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Walden[/name_m]
[name_u]Calder[/name_u]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Emory[/name_u]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] “[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]”
[name_m]Haldor[/name_m] “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]” (same letters as [name_m]Harold[/name_m] & means god’s/thor’s rock like [name_m]Alan[/name_m] means little rock) pr. hal-der
[name_m]Harry[/name_m] with your last name is just asking for trouble. Could he go his whole life without it ever being a source of ridicule for him? Yes. But if it ever is a problem for him… you would hate yourself. Sorry.
I like the option of [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] best. Other ideas:
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] ([name_m]Larry[/name_m])
I’d never thought of [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], and [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] is cute as well. I think [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is the front runner for now!
Thank you!
This was so helpful!
Thank you! I love the ties between [name_m]Harold[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]! That’s definitely going on our list!
[name_m]Callum[/name_m] is very sweet too and I like the [name_u]Cal[/name_u] nickname a lot.
