[name]Long[/name] time lurker, new commenter, first time poster
My contant debate with myself (hubby doesn”t care like I do) is whether I should give my kids Italian names or just unusual, less ethnic names that go better with our last name ([name]Fitzpatrick[/name]). I”m very Italian (culturally and name-wise), which is why I would want to pass that down- my husband doesn”t really have a strong irish/english culture so we don”t want to go that route for names even though they”d probably work the best, sound-wise. I was lucky and my maiden name was Italian so there was no clashing. Now that I”m married, the maiden gets pushed to the side and my kids are stuck with [name]Fitzpatrick[/name].
Thoughts on this? I don”t want their names to sound silly. Is it just me? Anyone else have this issue?
I have so many names i like for different scenarios. We”re not TTC but I feel like when we do, that first name will set the tone for everything, Italian vs. Not.
Now to the name lists, I”d love your thoughts on these, too! I don”t have time for multiple posts, but these are the top contenders ATM
Boys :
[name]Felix[/name]** (not really THAT italian which is why i like it so much… dont like the gaining popularity but i knew a little old italian man named [name]Felix[/name] and i love it for either route we choose lol)
[name]Lorenzo[/name]/[name]Enzo[/name] (not necessarily nn but used alone too)
[name]Leonardo[/name]/[name]Leo[/name] (same ^)
[name]Emilio[/name]
[name]Roman[/name]** (also technically not italian but depending on a sib-set, it”s close enough to go both ways, i think)
[name]Soren[/name] **
[name]Marek[/name]**
Girls:
[name]Elisa[/name]
[name]Rosalia[/name]
[name]Noemi[/name] / [name]Naomi[/name]**
[name]Giorgia[/name] / [name]Georgia[/name]**
[name]Paolina[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name] (dont like the italian form. [name]Vittoria[/name])
[name]Neve[/name]** (could be both - pr. ”Neh-veh” in Italian, means [name]Snow[/name]. I like that or ”nev” for non-italian)
[name]Violet[/name]** (don”t like [name]Violetta[/name], maybe too popular soon)
[name]Ruby[/name]** (too popular soon)
** = part of the Not-Italian list
Thanks!

also, any suggestions for less common non-italian names based on my list would be appreciated… i scour these forums everyday looking for them!
[name]Viola[/name] [name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name] [name]Mary[/name]
[name]Marianna[/name] [name]Rosalia[/name]
[name]Helena[/name] [name]Patrice[/name]
[name]Patrizia[/name] [name]Helene[/name] (won’t go with [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] I read your surname after doing this combo) btw I love [name]Fitzpatrick[/name].
[name]Alicia[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]

[name]Hi[/name],
[name]Felix[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] sounds silly to me, sorry!
I [name]Love[/name] [name]Enzo[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name]. I like [name]Roman[/name] but i’m not sure if [name]Roman[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] works and I like [name]Emilio[/name] but perhaps not with the fact that [name]Emilia[/name] is a popular girls name.
From your girls list I like [name]Elisa[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name], [name]Rosalia[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name], and [name]Neve[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name].
You could give an Italian middle name and a english first name
e.g [name]Anna[/name] [name]Francesca[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name]
[name]Christopher[/name] [name]Enzo[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name]
What is your maiden name?
[name]Rollo[/name]: thanks for the suggestions! I had no idea [name]Guy[/name] was Italian! It seems French to me. Not my style though
My dad would be beside himself if I chose [name]Claudio[/name] I never really considered it before, because it”s the name of his fav singer but I do like [name]Claudio[/name] [name]Lucas[/name]. I like [name]Luca[/name] too but it”s gaining popularity among Americans and no longer appeals to me. That”s definitely going on the list!
[name]Elisa[/name] is actually (eh-[name]LISA[/name], ”e” as in ”egg”). [name]Viola[/name] is too old lady for me- maybe as a middle name? And I”m glad SOMEONE likes my last name! Haha
[name]Michaela[/name]: I agree about [name]Felix[/name] sounding silly… I just like the name so much I can”t take it off the list yet lol. You think [name]Enzo[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] are better without the longer version? I”m in the middle about it, but I”m not sure how someone would feel if they didn”t have a long ”proper” name…
Are the starred names the ones you liked best? Not crazy about any except [name]Alba[/name] (too much ref to [name]Jessica[/name] [name]Alba[/name]?), [name]Natalia[/name], [name]Francesca[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name].
English first with Italian middle is definitely something i”m thinking about… but then i figure, if half is Italian, why not just make the whole thing Italian? Or give them English in the middle so it”s the 2nd choice to go by, not the first.
Thanks for reminding me that I love the names [name]Anna[/name] and [name]Francesca[/name] and together ” they”re now on my list! And i looooove the name [name]Michael[/name]. But it”s too common, don”t you think?.. or at least it was. Is anyone naming their son [name]Michael[/name] anymore?
My maiden name is Azzarello. Not really usable for a middle name, even for a boy lol
Unfortunately the boy names stand out as more obviously Italian. What about giving him an English name that has an equivalent in Italian. For example, you could name him [name]Nicholas[/name] and call him [name]Nico[/name].
fay: I like that idea! Now I have to find more that work as perfectly as [name]Nicholas[/name]-[name]Nico[/name] Actually, I really like that now that I wrote it out. It’s on the list!
thanks
Yes the * are my favourites. I think that [name]Enzo[/name] is great on its own but I know what you mean about [name]Leo[/name] however I am not a fan of [name]Leonardo[/name]
You could use the name [name]Zara[/name] from your maiden name for a girl.
[name]Zara[/name] [name]Rosalia[/name] Fitzapatrick, [name]Zara[/name] [name]Natalia[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name]
I don’t think that [name]Michael[/name] is too popular and if you love it…
[name]Hi[/name] Leafitz! Your last name is very similar to mine, and my husband and I faced some challenges when naming our children, as our last name is quite a mouthful! (By the way, I really like the LN [name]Fitzpatrick[/name].)
Here are the names I really like on your list!
Boys :
[name]Enzo[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] (my favorite)
[name]Roman[/name]
**[name]Leo[/name] [name]Michael[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] is very handsome.
MMM MMM MMM! I [name]LOVE[/name] Italian names!
One that I didn’t see on anybodies lists is [name]Giada[/name] ( Due to the popularity of [name]Giada[/name] De Laurentiis in [name]America[/name], I would think it would be familiar to Americans) I think that since they will get Italian and Irish/English genetics, it really isn’t that bad!
You could also do Italian middles.
If your husband isn’t wanting Irish names and you want to give your children something from each of their parents, I say go for it!
Girls
Italian(I did some that I thought sounded good with your last name)
[name]Felix[/name] (I love this, but [name]Felix[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] sounds silly- maybe as a middle?)
[name]Lorenzo[/name]/[name]Enzo[/name] (I love this, very handsome)
[name]Emilio[/name] (My cousin named her son this- too cute!)
[name]Roman[/name] (This is one of the few trendy names I like- I’ve met a few Romes as well)
Girls:
[name]Neve[/name] (I like the Italian pronunciation)
[name]Violet[/name] (Gorgeous and timeless)
[name]Ruby[/name] (Ditto)
I personally would go with a non-cultural specific first name and Italian middle name. There’s something about the idea of an [name]Emilio[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] that’s just a bit strange to me.
Most are too Italian. If we had an Italian last name, maybe I’d go super ethnic… but my husband, while he doesn’t care, still vetoes the ones that he cant pronounce the way i deem “correct” lol.
[name]Isabel[/name]: there’s nothing more fun & distracting from work than being the lurker
Finding combos I like makes me want to have some kids now…
I love those beautiful Itaqlian names, but I honestly think you should consider a name that sounds harmonious with your last name. Some of the names in your list don’t sound exclusively Italian and would work great with [name]Fitzpatrick[/name]. However, I think an ultra- Italian sounding first name paired with [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] might be a bit hard for the child to live with even in this day and age of innovative naming trends. Try mixing and matching some other specifically ethnic names ([name]Pedro[/name] Weissmann, [name]Sven[/name] [name]Abdullah[/name], [name]Patrick[/name] Wyzynski, [name]Pierre[/name] [name]Larson[/name], [name]Mohammad[/name] Francois, etc.) and see how they sound to you. Of course, if you love unusual combinations they might sound great to you. And maybe you don’t really care what some more traditional-minded (or more judgemental?) people think. And if your child is a girl she might end up changing her last name if she gets married anyway. Ultimately you should pick the name you think is absolutely the best for your child regardless of what your friends, relatives, or anonymous nameberry advisers suggest!
If you do want to go Italian, adding Azzarello as a second middle name might make it clearer how they have such an Italian name.
Looks can matter, too–if your boys look Italian they might be able to pull off [name]Emilio[/name] [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] quite well, whereas if they look very English it would seem sillier.
I think you have more leeway with the girls. I don’t think anyone would bat an eye at [name]Francesca[/name] with any ethnicity of name, for instance–a long, flowing name ending in -a will be “in” enough that it won’t seem out of place.
Its a dilemma I closely identify with…an you name a child [name]Santiago[/name] [name]Wright[/name]?!
Have you thought about these? They sort of ride the fence between the English and Italian speaking worlds
[name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Silvia[/name]
[name]Emilia[/name]
[name]Sofia[/name] (already too popular)
[name]Carla[/name]
[name]Elena[/name]
[name]Emanuel[/name]
[name]Claudio[/name] - already on your list - I think its a FAB name!
[name]Tomas[/name] - this is also a Scottish/Irish variation of [name]Thomas[/name] thats close to [name]Tomasso[/name]
[name]Lorenzo[/name] - also on your list; I think is common in English speaking counties and doesn’t sound silly with your last name!
