[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone,
So i know the name [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] seems really dated and old, often times put in the same category as [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] and [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f]. But I recently found the name in my family tree, and she always went by Hilly which I think is absolutely adorable. [name_f]DO[/name_f] you think [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] could come back and look cute on a little girl? It rhymes with the now fashionable [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], and I think it could be darling. and [name_f]HILDA[/name_f] or [name_f]HILDE[/name_f]???
Also for middle names I like
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]. I probably wouldn’t use it myself, but that’s not the point.
It’s pretty cool that you found it on your family tree, and Hilly is a very sweet nickname. Although it was ruined for me by Hilly Holbrook, an evil, racist woman in The Help. [name_m]Just[/name_m] thought I’d mention that.
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is my favorite, although [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is a close second.
I think it could work on a girl born today but if you’re in an English speaking country I would use the [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] spelling. I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] the best.
I actually love love [name_f]Hilde[/name_f] (pretty much the same pronunciation, but I think the E-ending is slightly more delicate.)
Something about the “LD” sound is very special.
Unfortunately the name does have the hefty Viking lass association, so good idea to pair it with a middle name that’s light and effervescent. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] fit the bill.
I have a close friend called [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], and I honestly think it’s gorgeous.
It’s a bit frumpy, but even at 17 she pulls it off perfectly. She’s pretty and popular and funny, and it just suits her.
I really like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], but if you’re worried about her disliking it I’d be tempted to give her the most popular option, which is [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] ([name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is about #130 in the US, [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is #64) so she could use it if she really really wanted to. Alternatively [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] seems the most trendy, which evens out Hildas old-lady sound, I don’t know.
[name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing [name_f]Hilde[/name_f]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] the same as [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], or one syllable only?
As for suggestions… I’d go for something upbeat and feminine but not too frilly -
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
While I’m not a huge fan of the name itself (I prefer [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]), I do think it’s usable.
Is it coming back into style? No, I don’t think so!
I suppose many people still put it in a category with [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], etc. (vintage, rather old-sounding names).
I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] better than [name_f]Hilde[/name_f], since the clear -a ending makes the name lighter.
From your combos I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] best, however, I would prefer [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] with a “lighter”, less clunky and vintage name.
For example:
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
^ this! I used to love the NN Hilly, and it sounds adorable, but Hilly Holbrook… It would stop me from using it, but if it doesn’t matter to you, then I don’t think it’s known enough to ruin it. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is my fave MN from your list.
I think [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] would work as a modern name. I also like all of the mn options - but [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is probably my favourite of the three.
