Okay, so I have loved the name [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] for a long time. My husband also loves it and it goes well with our daughter’s name. But I have not been able to find a middle name that I like with it. I’m also torn between just using [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] or [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Hildie[/name_f]. Which do you prefer and what middle would you put with either [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] or [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]?
EDIT: Here’s our current list, what does everyone think:
Hmmm, I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. What do you think about [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]?
Unfortunately I can’t use many of those names because of other people/associations. I love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], but I’m not sure the flow is great with [name_f]Hildie[/name_f]. Here’s our current list, what does everyone think:
I like [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]. In my opinion, if you’re going to call her [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] most of the time anyway, then it makes sense to just use it one its own.
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]! SO gorgeous.
I have a longer “formal” name with a nickname, and I’ve always liked the versatility, so I’d use [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]. Plus, that is just so, so gorgeous.
Thanks, all. I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f], but I wonder if it’s a little much…I know that my style is all over the place and I have a lot more surprising names on my list. I do like [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] better than [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], though. I’m so torn!
Thanks, bedhead! I’m trying out a few of them…[name_f]Hildie[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] and [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] are nice. I will keep working on this…especially since my husband loves it (and the names he likes are rare).
[name_f]Hildie[/name_f] is very sweet, but I wouldn’t use it stand-alone. Have you considered [name_f]Brynhild[/name_f] “[name_f]Hildie[/name_f],” or other names containing “hild?” Another option is Hild, the Old English equivalent of [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]. Hild is the title heroine of an historical novel by Nicola Griffith, and also the name of a character in the TV series The Last Kingdom. It sounds more streamlined and modern than [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], in my opinion.
Hmm, really? Hild sounds much older and more ancient than [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] or [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] to me…and it also sounds like Hilt.
I love [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f], but I’ve been told that it’s way too much and should only be a guilty pleasure name or else a middle name.
[name_u]True[/name_u], “modern” was the wrong word choice. I still think Hild could be read as more contemporary than [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], though — it’s like the stripped-down version, no? I picture a [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m] type due to the book and TV characters. [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] could grow on me, but my first impression is that it’s very dated and stodgy. [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] would be much fresher but I don’t see it aging so well — think [name_f]Wendy[/name_f].
And [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is pretty out there but I like it too! Swans symbolize personal transformation (“ugly ducking” grey cygnet becomes elegant adult swan) and realization of inner potential. I don’t think it’s totally out-of-the-question as a first name. People would get used to it, right?
