Himalaya ~ for a girl's name?

This is captivating me as a refreshing girl’s name. What are your thoughts? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have other suggestions? Thanks!

Hmm. While I love the idea behind it, and I agree that it is a fresh take on a girl’s name, I’m not sure if I’m 100% fond of it. One option might be to find names of cities in the Himalayas… Perhaps Quetta or Dehra? Both of those sound much more appealing to me than [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f]. My own daughter’s middle name is Xanadu - which came from [name_m]Coleridge[/name_m]'s poem talking about Shangdu in [name_f]China[/name_f]/Mongolia.

[name_f]Malaya[/name_f]
[name_u]Everest[/name_u] [name_f]Leia[/name_f]
[name_f]Laya[/name_f] [name_u]Everest[/name_u]

In terms of sound, it could work, but for me it’s too obviously the name of a mountain range to work as a first name. Kind of like naming your kids “Appalachian,” you know?

I agree it is captivating and refreshing and I love the originality but I do have the same reservations as the others. It may be too firmly set as a mountain range to translate as a name, also as I’m an Aussie and we have a habit of shortening everything, would she get the nickname Himmy? or [name_f]Laya[/name_f] maybe? Neither are hugely appealing.
In saying that though, the Himalayas are stunningly beautiful and moving, pretty good qualities to bestow on a daughter.

Thanx for your feedback!!! Much appreciated. <3

I get what you’re all saying…it is an unusual choice…but is it rare, refreshing, lovely & interesting or just bizarro-world??

ATM, I’m leaning towards rare, refreshing, lovely & interesting…time will tell…I’ll see if it’s really love at first sight or just a dalliance. xx

PS Love the names Utopia & Tiberius!!! Pure magic as sibling names

@oceansunrise thank you so much! It’s nice to hear that. I get a lot of mixed reactions on their names, and they certainly are the odd ones out, even with their classmates [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Trinity[/name_f], [name_u]Sierra[/name_u], Zahria, [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_m]Brodie[/name_m], TiJay, [name_m]Talan[/name_m], etc. HOWEVER, that being said - I would not ever change their names. They’re perfect. And I still felt this way after getting a lot of “you’re naming her WHAT??” when I announced Utopia as my daughter’s first name, and a lot of questions about how to pronounce [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m] (“is it Teh-berry-us? Tuh-beer-E-us? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you call him [name_m]Ty[/name_m]?” - no, no, and no).

So, as I’m sure you can tell from my kids’ names and the names in my signature… I am all about rare, refreshing, lovely, interesting, and magical names! I think that what is most important is that it resonate with you. If you’re full on in love with it, everyone else will learn to accept it. And who knows… [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f] might just be gracing the pages of baby name books 10 years from now (I say this because I recently found Utopia in a baby name book at a popular toy store, when 10 years ago it most certainly was not in any name books)! I don’t think I’d ever consider it directly, instead opting to look for a more subtle reference as I mentioned in my earlier post, but it certainly doesn’t sound unpleasant, and I think the nickname [name_f]Laya[/name_f] could be quite endearing. And while I’m typing this, Nepal strikes me as a possible name. Maybe for a boy. But maybe I just like it because it sounds [name_m]Vulcan[/name_m]. I’m nerdy like that.

WOW Bluedanube, I’m positively enthralled with your name list and your children’s names!!!

Beyond sublime!!!

You’ve got wonderful ‘naming mojo’ in my opinion :)…I’m so glad to see a Utopia Xanadu & [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] in the world…such a lyrical, classic and beatific name combination.

As for [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f]…I think it is pretty…I would team it with [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] i.e. [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f] [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] or something similar…not sure… However…I think I’m leaning towards [name_f]Urania[/name_f] now…besotted with the meaning and nn possibility [name_u]Reign[/name_u]/ [name_u]Rain[/name_u]/ [name_f]Raine[/name_f] too…however, Utopia was a serious contender for me not so long ago…so it’s wonderful to see you’ve chosen this amazing name!!!

xx

I’m sorry but I have to go with bizarro-world (which, by the way, gave me a much needed chuckle).

I’m not sure about [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] with [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f]… it’s a little too much double A action for me, but sometimes I like that sort of thing. I’d have to roll it around on the tongue for a while. It’s headed in the right direction, though. Something pretty, charming. Then again, I think [name_f]Himalaya[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] could totally work, but that might be too much.

I like [name_f]Urania[/name_f]. People have told me it sounds like urine or uranium in the past, but the history behind it is lovely. Opens up an avenue for some interesting middle names, too - nothing too frilly as [name_f]Urania[/name_f] already sounds very feminine to me. [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] would be a fun option, since it harks back to Greece again but is a modern [name_m]French[/name_m] name.

Interestingly enough I took a look at your name list - my daughter is friends with a [name_u]Cyan[/name_u] (mn [name_f]Emma[/name_f]) and a [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] (mn [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]). [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] gets called [name_f]Libby[/name_f] a lot, but I make it a point to call her [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] as it’s just such a great name.
