Hippolyta?

This would be a middle name only sort of deal, but what do you think? It’s mythological and Shakespearean which are two things that typically go over well on Nameberry. I’m no good at explaining pronunciations, but here’s a link for anyone unfamiliar: http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?hippol01.wav=Hippolyta

I’m sorry, but the ‘hippo’ reference completely outweighs ( :? ) any Shakespearean, Greek or otherwise fancy pedigree. This one is off limits, IMHO.

I think it’s a great name, but not for a child.

I agree with phoebesmom. Also, it’s such a clunky name-especially for a child.

I disagree with the previous posters. I think it’s a great middle name! It would be terrible as a first name, because of the teasing potential, but most kids won’t know her middle name unless she chooses to tell them. I would love to use Greek mythological names myself too! [name]Andromeda[/name] and [name]Thalia[/name] are my favorites, but Hippolyta is great too. I think I’ll add it to my list!

This. Plus, I’ve never understood the whole ‘no one has to know her middle name’ thought process. First of all, I knew my classmates’ middle names growing up. I guess it depends on where you live but I grew up in Connecticut where monograms are very popular and ‘what does the X stand for?’ was a very common question. Second of all, why would you want to give your child a name she would be embarrassed about and want to hide? There are so many great names out there that I’m sure you could find a name you love that wouldn’t be embarrassing.

I’d have to agree, the Hippo just comes screaming across, despite all the nice other references and history. Is there a reason you’d like to use this as a mn? Does it have some kind of special connection for you?

A lovely name, but more befitting an obese kitty cat.

I think I have to agree with most everyone else. I suppose as a mn it’s ok, but I think it would be a lot for a little girl to carry.

I totally agree, owl, and never understand the argument that no one will know their mn. I knew ALL of my classmates’ middle names growing up as well-I still do!

Exactly. [name]Trust[/name] me, I was the “fat girl” growing up and I definitely think you should leave Hippo-anything for the obese kitty cats

Interesting to check the new posts and see threads titled “Hippolyta”, “[name]Artemis[/name]” and “[name]Apollonia[/name]”…

I don’t see a large African animal. The problem is that I can’t forget the (two!) myths concerning her death.

In both, she’s on the receiving end of some rather ignoble actions by famous heroes. Not that those put her at fault; it’s easy for Wonder Woman’s revisionist mythology to make the Amazons the heroes (and incidentally, in that version of the story, Hippolyta lives).

If no one is going to know their middle names, then what would be the point anyway??
