His girl names list

Hello Berries,

My husband gave me a list of names he likes. I don’t know what to think about it, and I would need your opinion, hoping it can convince me.

Azelle: [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-zel. I like the way it sounds, but it looks made-up even if it’s not. I don’t want [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] because people in [name_f]France[/name_f] can’t pronounce it right. I’m also considering Azelma.

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]: I love it, but it’s getting popular in [name_f]France[/name_f]. Also, we are considering [name_u]Everest[/name_u] for a boy, I think it would be too close.

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]: I love it, but the fact that it’s a masculine name and so popular in [name_u]America[/name_u] bothers mea lot.

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]: Super cute, but it doesn’t feel right.

[name_f]Freya[/name_f]: Same

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]: I don’t like the english pronunciation because I hear Irish. I like ee-ris.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]: I don’t like the french pronunciation “Lilit”.

[name_u]Max[/name_u] / [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]: I would use [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], a name I love. He would use [name_u]Max[/name_u] because he likes [name_u]Max[/name_u] but he is not a fan of [name_f]Maxine[/name_f].

[name_f]Mina[/name_f]: I don’t know what to think about it

[name_f]Nell[/name_f]: It’s too soft for my tastes. Sounds more like a nickname.

[name_f]Noa[/name_f]: It’s just too masculine in my opinion, I really can’t imagine my daughter with this name. I like [name_f]Norah[/name_f] but it’s too popular.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and the nickname [name_f]Liv[/name_f].

[name_f]Thea[/name_f]: [name_m]Just[/name_m] no a fan. I prefer [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].

As a middle name, we both like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Thelma[/name_f], [name_f]Alaska[/name_f], [name_f]Boheme[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], Rosamay, Isilda, but he just doesn’t. Any ideas?

I love [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and [name_f]Noa[/name_f] (which I see as quite feminine because I know several).

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] seems like a clear winner, it’s on his list and you love it. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is nice.

I also think [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] seems like a really good compromise. You get a name you love, he gets a nickname he loves.

My favorites are [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], but sounds like you haven’t found one to agree on yet. [name_f]Mina[/name_f] is cute but feels like a nickname to me. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is nice but I would choose something other than [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] or it is too wordy.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you live in [name_f]France[/name_f]? If not I would not let popularity of [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] in [name_f]France[/name_f] bother you.

A few ideas with similar sounds:

[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecile[/name_f]
[name_f]Clemence[/name_f]
[name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Odile[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabine[/name_f]
[name_u]Theophile[/name_u]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

The first thing I notice is that both seem to love [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. That seems like a winning name if you both like it without any reservations.

With some of these names, perhaps you could go with a full name and he can use one of his suggestions as a nickname instead. It can even be a special name for him, a Daddy/daughter thing if you wanted it to be. Or even a variation one of these names.

Azelle-- [name_f]Giselle[/name_f], [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_u]Azariah[/name_u]

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]-- [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Charlize[/name_f]/[name_f]Charlise[/name_f], [name_f]Charlene[/name_f], [name_f]Charmaine[/name_f], Chartreuse, [name_f]Chardonnay[/name_f], [name_f]Chiara[/name_f], [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]-- [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f], [name_f]Cleona[/name_f], Cliora, [name_f]Cleola[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], or even just changing the spelling to [name_f]Clio[/name_f]

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]-- [name_f]Irina[/name_f], [name_f]Irisa[/name_f], [name_f]Eris[/name_f], [name_f]Edris[/name_f]? Maybe even [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]?

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]-- [name_f]Lilabet[/name_f], [name_f]Lilias[/name_f], [name_f]Lillis[/name_f], [name_f]Lillika[/name_f]. Or [name_f]Judith[/name_f], [name_f]Ardith[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f],

[name_f]Mina[/name_f]-- [name_f]Adamina[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmina[/name_f], [name_f]Philomena[/name_f], [name_f]Carmina[/name_f]

[name_f]Nell[/name_f]-- [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Fenella[/name_f], [name_f]Janelle[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Nellary[/name_f], [name_f]Prunella[/name_f],

[name_f]Thea[/name_f]-- Would he agree to [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Thea[/name_f]? You could also use [name_f]Anthea[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], [name_f]Theora[/name_f], [name_f]Tea[/name_f] (or [name_f]Taya[/name_f]), or maybe even [name_f]Galatea[/name_f]

Going the other way around, here are some suggestions based on your names he might prefer…

[name_f]Alaska[/name_f]-- [name_f]Alanna[/name_f], [name_f]Alaina[/name_f], [name_f]Eliska[/name_f], [name_f]Mariska[/name_f],

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]-- [name_f]Prima[/name_f], [name_f]Priya[/name_f] (see suggestions for Rosamay)

Rosamay-- [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Rosella[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalba[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]

Isilda-- [name_f]Gisela[/name_f], [name_u]Isa[/name_u]/[name_f]Iza[/name_f], [name_f]Griselda[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Isaline[/name_f], [name_f]Isaura[/name_f], [name_f]Iseult[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is a very nice option but I don’t prefer two word names in a row. I like [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] and think it is better with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_f]Mina[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] the best.

Yes, we do live in [name_f]France[/name_f], but we go back to [name_u]America[/name_u] every summer. We both like [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], which was my great grand-mother’s name! Thank you.

Thank you @Maerad

I like [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] for you.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you both like [name_f]Liv[/name_f] just on its own? [name_f]Liv[/name_f] Esmée or [name_f]Liv[/name_f] Esmée Automne would be beautiful.

Suggestions:
[name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] - nn [name_u]Gene[/name_u]/[name_f]Genie[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] - nn [name_u]Bernie[/name_u]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Celie[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Corie[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_u]Pascale[/name_u]
[name_f]Prue[/name_f]
[name_f]Zadie[/name_f]

I like:

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]-eye Riss
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Mina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]

@Mystiquedeep: Thanks a lot for your opinion and your suggestions, we really appreciate it! I would need to ask him for [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. Esmée is my favorite name. He used to like it, but he doesn’t know how he feels about it right now. It’s still on our list though. I like [name_f]Charlize[/name_f], [name_f]Galatea[/name_f] and [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], but I know he doesn’t. I keep [name_f]Eris[/name_f], [name_f]Prunella[/name_f], [name_f]Priya[/name_f] & [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] from your list. I will ask him later what he thinks about these names.

Thank you @[name_f]Erin[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f]

@Cactusgram: I love [name_f]Liv[/name_f] on its own. My husband also likes it, but he thinks it’s too nicknamy.
I keep [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] and [name_f]Zadie[/name_f] from your list. Thank you!

Azelle: I do quite like this, though I understand what you mean by it seeming slightly made up. [name_f]Adela[/name_f], [name_f]Adelia[/name_f], [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] or [name_f]Zelie[/name_f] have similar sounds but are longer like the names you seem to like

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]: [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] is lovely, i cant comment on popularity but I don’t think it’s too close to [name_u]Everest[/name_u]. [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]?

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]: I’m not a fan of it in general (sorry) [name_f]Marcy[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]: [name_u]Love[/name_u] this - one of my favourites. [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Clio[/name_f]? [name_f]Juno[/name_f]? [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]?

[name_f]Freya[/name_f]: I really like [name_f]Freya[/name_f] too. It’s soft but strong. But if you’re not feeling it, then it might not be right.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]: I’m not sure on the [name_m]French[/name_m] pn either. [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]?

[name_u]Max[/name_u] / [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]: I have to confess I’m not a fan of [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] or [name_u]Max[/name_u]. This might be a stretch but [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_u]Max[/name_u]?

[name_f]Mina[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Mina[/name_f] - one of my favourites and the name of one of my favourite characters. It’s sweet and cute but also intriguing sounding. Other names like [name_f]Mina[/name_f]: [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Amaia[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mina[/name_f]?

[name_f]Nell[/name_f]: I love it, but it doesn’t sound like the one for you. [name_f]Della[/name_f]?

[name_f]Noa[/name_f]: I do think it’s sweet and I love the I sound, but I’ve met a lot of boy Noahs. [name_f]Romilly[/name_f], [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Noami[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]?

[name_f]Olive[/name_f]: I have to admit, it’s not one of my favourites. Nothing wrong with it as a name, it just reminds me of a food i dislike (sorry) [name_f]Liv[/name_f] is really sweet though

[name_f]Thea[/name_f]: [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f] would be nice. I do really like [name_f]Thea[/name_f] though -it’s fun but it feels substantial too. [name_f]Anthea[/name_f]? [name_f]Athena[/name_f]? [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]?

Some other ideas based on the names you like: [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f]

[name_u]Love[/name_u] your list of names I also agree that Azel sounds great but looks off. I also like the [name_m]French[/name_m] (and Spanish) pronunciation of [name_f]Iris[/name_f] more. I like maxine and olive from your list BUT olive/ [name_f]Liv[/name_f] is so so popular in the usa and she gets lost in a see of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]'s. I have a daughter named [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] when we went to [name_f]France[/name_f] everyone loves her name. So maybe [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] could be a first name? I also have a daughter named [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] every one and I mean EVERYONE compliments her name and I have only ever met one other [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]. Good luck!

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] is #180 in [name_f]France[/name_f]! Less than 0.1% of babies. That’s far too uncommon to worry about popularity - she’d be highly unlikely to encounter another [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] very often at all. I love it - I think it’s so elegant and beautiful, and has such a lovely meaning.

I agree with most of your other assessments, though I really dislike [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and think [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is too insubstantial for a real person - food names are dog names to me, and even then I’m not totally comfortable with them.

He seems to like 4-letter names! What about:

[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_f]Ione[/name_f]
[name_f]Iona[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
Auli
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]

Great names!
I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f] as well! I don’t think [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] works however. Too wordy.
Maybe if you accept [name_f]Olive[/name_f] from “his list” you could choose the middle name.
I like [name_f]Olive[/name_f] Rosamay

OR…
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Theadora[/name_f]

What about [name_f]Clea[/name_f]?

@tfzolghadr: You guys also have great tastes, I love your kid’s names!
Wow, it is so pretty, the colors are amazing! Thank you for sharing this.

@greyblue: Thanks a lot for your answer. I like [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] & [name_u]Romy[/name_u]. I know he doesn’t like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] though, I already asked him last week.

@Merylp: Your daughter’s names are gorgeous. I wish my husband would accept [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] as a first name, but he doesn’t like it enough :(. I’m glad to hear [name_m]French[/name_m] people liked [name_f]Boheme[/name_f]. The name is uncommon in [name_f]France[/name_f]!

@Textrovert: [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] is in the top 150. It’s not the most common name, this is true, but I’ve been doing statistics on a french forum for the past 7 years and I see it more and more. It’s definitely rising, and I bet it ill be as popular as [name_f]Adele[/name_f] in less than 10 years. Old french names such as [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] are getting very popular. But I agree, it’s very elegant. I love the name [name_f]Mira[/name_f], but I have a good friend named [name_f]Mira[/name_f]. Thank you!

@gabriellenz: Thank you. I like [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

@mrs-darling: I’m not a fan of [name_f]Clea[/name_f], but than you!

Azelle: I don’t like it, it reminds me of [name_f]Gazelle[/name_f] and the sound isn’t very beautiful either

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]: Not a fan, it’s too frilly for my taste

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]: Prefer it on a boy and I like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] on a girl much better.

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and I think it would be a lovely choice!

[name_f]Freya[/name_f]: [name_u]Love[/name_u] it too and the mystical meaning is beautiful

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]: I don’t like it and I prefer [name_f]Inez[/name_f] for example. All I see when I see [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is [name_f]Isis[/name_f].

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] but I agree with you that the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation isn’t as lovely as the English.

[name_u]Max[/name_u] / [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]: I don’t like it, it’s very masculine sounding

[name_f]Mina[/name_f]: So plain that I have no opinion on it either.

[name_f]Nell[/name_f]: It’s okay but not very special.

[name_f]Noa[/name_f]: I agree that it’s lovelier on a boy and without the h it looks very incomplete.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f]: I also really love [name_f]Olive[/name_f], it’s very sweet and I prefer it to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].

[name_f]Thea[/name_f]: I don’t like [name_f]Thea[/name_f] or [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], they both sound very ugly, harsh and masculine to me.

From your list I really like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] and Isilda! They’re all vintage names that are still quite unique.
Some more names that you could show your husband:

[name_f]Rheta[/name_f]
[name_u]Connelly[/name_u]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]

Names that could also work well in [name_f]France[/name_f]:
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Tiara[/name_f]
[name_f]Allaire[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadya[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_u]Roni[/name_u]
[name_f]Abitha[/name_f]

What about Azélie Autumn? It’s the French form of Azalea, I believe, and very similar to Azelle. Giselle Autumn could also be an option (and it sounds lovely in French! :)). Apologies if anyone else has suggested these, I only glanced down the first page of replies.

Other suggestions:
Pomeline
Éleonore “Nell”
Odelle
Elise
Mariel(le)
Frances
Sylvie
Mira
Ebba
Imogen
Charis
Runa
Clarissa / Clara
Fia
Ginny
Esme

@eliane: Thank you for commenting his list. From your suggestions, I like: [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (unwearable in [name_f]France[/name_f] though), [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], [name_u]Raven[/name_u], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].

@morning_glory: Thank you! I’m not a fan of Azélie, sorry  The french form of [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is actually Azalée, which I like, but I don’t know how that would turn in English. We would like the name to be easily pronounceable in [name_m]French[/name_m] and in English. [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] is beautiful, but too out-dated in my country, I prefer Yselle. From your suggestions, I like [name_f]Esme[/name_f] (big yes) and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. A good friend of mine is named [name_f]Mira[/name_f]. [name_u]Francis[/name_u] is my uncle and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] my aunt. I prefer [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] over [name_f]El[/name_f]éonore, but not sure [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] works after [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]…

My choices are [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Olive[/name_f]! and it sounds like one that you don’t have any issues with. I agree that Azelle sounds made up (even if it isn’t, it may frustrate baby if people misjudge the name as made up), but I think all the others are good names for baby!

Also, you could always try waiting a few days and then asking your husband again about the same exact names. That usually works with mine  and then when I point out that he said he didn’t like it a couple of days before, he says that it has grown on him. lol
