His list, My list, Our list

To update all you nameberries on my little (now 5 month old) nameless one, we have a concrete plan, in part because of your suggestions. We are moving slowly to keep the stress level down and to be thoughtful about it.

We made a list together of the names that we could both live with. We also have individual lists of names that didn’t make the cut. We’re going to rank our agreed upon list and pick either the clear winner or draw from them if there is a tie.

I was wondering, if you have time on your hands, if you might look over out lists- both the names we CAN agree on and the ones we CAN’T and see if there are any compromise names you can think of between his loves and mine. Otherwise, I just thought you might be interested in where things were at.

Our list:
[name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Thea[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Coral[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Juniper[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Azure[/name]
[name]Lavendar[/name]
[name]Delphi[/name]
[name]Carys[/name]

Now, the names we could not agree on- is there a compromise here? I realize that I’ve never really articulated to you all what names DH does like.

My list:
[name]Beth[/name] (I adore [name]Beth[/name]. Simply adore it. It was the name of my father’s deceased twin sister, but it is probably DH’s least fav. name. So. Sad.)
[name]Elisabeth[/name] (in any form)
[name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Mags[/name] (also family)
[name]Willoughby[/name] (one of you suggested this, and now I’m loving it. so very much!)
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Aster[/name]
[name]Astra[/name]
[name]Elma[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Zeta[/name]
[name]Bryony[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Nora[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]
[name]Waverly[/name]
[name]Gwyneth[/name]

DH’s list (he didn’t make a formal list, I’m just trying to remember the ones he said he loves that I just can’t get on board with)
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Ava[/name]/[name]Eva[/name]/[name]Iva[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Cecelia[/name]
[name]Daria[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]
[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Simone[/name]
[name]Tierney[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Annelise[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Siobhan[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]

Now, we don’t NEED more names. Obviously. But, looking at both our lists of names that didn’t make the cut- is there a compromise name I’m missing? I can’t figure out why we agree on some of the ones we do, but don’t on others. All the names on our okay list are just, well, okay because they are all slightly tinged with almost a year of batting them around (for example, I hear [name]Lark[/name] and I remember all the negative things he’s said about it and me for liking it and he hears [name]Thea[/name] and has the same reaction), so, if there was a name we haven’t come upon before, that’d probably be the best.

First I have grouped some names from your lists, then later I provided some possible compromise names.

Names that feel more modern: [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Lark[/name], [name]Juno[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Delphi[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Aster[/name], [name]Astra[/name], [name]Zeta[/name], [name]Eden[/name]

Names that make me think of gods, goddesses, or the heavens: [name]Thea[/name], [name]Juno[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Delphi[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Aster[/name], [name]Astra[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Eden[/name]

Names that feel artistic and a little bit avant-garde: [name]Azure[/name], [name]Delphi[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Astra[/name], [name]Zeta[/name], [name]Isadora[/name], [name]Simone[/name], [name]Siobhan[/name]

Names that remind me of nature: [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Lark[/name], [name]Coral[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Lavender[/name] (though I hear the color before the flower), [name]Willoughby[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Aster[/name], [name]Astra[/name], [name]Elma[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Bryony[/name], [name]Laurel[/name]

Names that feel timeless and/or very classic: [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Cecelia[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Lydia[/name]

Names that really would make me take notice (stand out from the crowd): [name]Lark[/name], [name]Juno[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], [name]Delphi[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Astra[/name], [name]Eden[/name]

Some possible compromise names:

[name]Sylvia[/name] (means ”of the forest”; nn [name]Sylvie[/name]) ” reminds me a lot of [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Simone[/name] but has a nature meaning
[name]Margot[/name] ” variation on [name]Margaret[/name], but a lot more striking and artistic sounding
[name]Willow[/name] ” like [name]Willoughby[/name] but more of a tree name, feels a little bit softer
[name]Willodean[/name] ” for a more old-fashioned variant to [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Anemone[/name] ” Greek, nature, goddess/nymph name all in one; has the feel of a soft, sweet vintage name like [name]Adelaide[/name] or [name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Olivine[/name] ” jewel name that reminds me of [name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Wisteria[/name] ” flower name that sounds sweetly old-fashioned
[name]Arcadia[/name] ” old-fashioned name with a meaning similar to ”[name]Eden[/name]”
[name]Zaria[/name] ” a cross btw [name]Daria[/name] and [name]Zeta[/name]
[name]Cynthia[/name] ” more classic, goddess version of ”[name]Luna[/name]”
[name]Alisa[/name] ” instead of [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Lilias[/name] == somewhat like [name]Aster[/name], another flower name (lily), also reminds me of [name]Elise[/name]
Annabeth ” you get your [name]Beth[/name] in there
[name]Thalia[/name] ” like [name]Thea[/name] but also a nature name ”blooming”

Lots of really nice suggestions; I’ll just add these:

[name]Rhea[/name]
[name]Rilla[/name]
[name]Priya[/name]
[name]Liora[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
Elowen
[name]Avis[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Calla[/name]
[name]Mona[/name]
[name]Junia[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Elva[/name]
Rosebay
[name]Ottilie[/name]
[name]Rosa[/name]
[name]Sian[/name]
[name]Linnea[/name]
Tulia
Finnoula
[name]Liana[/name]
[name]Alma[/name]

I was wondering, if you have time on your hands, if you might look over out lists- both the names we CAN agree on and the ones we CAN’T and see if there are any compromise names you can think of between his loves and mine. Otherwise, I just thought you might be interested in where things were at.

I will * the ones I love

Our list:
[name]Blythe[/name]*
[name]Thea[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]*
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Coral[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Juniper[/name]* nn [name]June[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]**
[name]Azure[/name]
[name]Lavendar[/name]
[name]Delphi[/name]
[name]Carys[/name]***

Now, the names we could not agree on- is there a compromise here? I realize that I’ve never really articulated to you all what names DH does like.

My list:
[name]Beth[/name] (I adore [name]Beth[/name]. Simply adore it. It was the name of my father’s deceased twin sister, but it is probably DH’s least fav. name. So. Sad.)
[name]Elisabeth[/name] (in any form) - What about [name]Eliza[/name]*****
[name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Mags[/name] (also family) - What about [name]Margo[/name]? [name]Maisie[/name]?
[name]Willoughby[/name] (one of you suggested this, and now I’m loving it. so very much!) - What about [name]Willow[/name] or [name]Willa[/name]?
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Aster[/name]
[name]Astra[/name]
[name]Elma[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name] - Maybe if her nn were [name]Rory[/name], he’d like it.
[name]Zeta[/name]
[name]Bryony[/name] - What about [name]Brenna[/name]?
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Nora[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Eden[/name] - What about [name]Edith[/name] nn [name]Edie[/name]?
[name]Waverly[/name]
[name]Gwyneth[/name] - What about [name]Genevieve[/name]?

DH’s list (he didn’t make a formal list, I’m just trying to remember the ones he said he loves that I just can’t get on board with)
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Ava[/name]/[name]Eva[/name]/Ivat
[name]Olivia[/name] - love it, what about [name]Olive[/name]?
[name]Cecelia[/name] - I spell this [name]Cecilia[/name]. What about [name]Cecily[/name]?
[name]Daria[/name] - What about [name]Dasha[/name]?
[name]Nadia[/name] - for some reason, this name makes me think of the word nude.
[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Simone[/name] - what about [name]Simona[/name]
[name]Tierney[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name] - love it! got to go again, sorry!

[name]TIA[/name]
*edited to add more names on our individual lists, in case that helps[/quote]

Apologies if you have already considered and rejected this one but… how about [name]Elspeth[/name]? He like [name]Elise[/name], and you love [name]Beth[/name] - maybe this could be a compromise. It still has the ‘feel’ and sound of [name]Beth[/name]. I actually think that [name]Elspeth[/name] is a lovely name.

[name]Aurora[/name] + [name]Annabel[/name] == [name]Oriana[/name]

[name]Aurora[/name] + [name]Ava[/name] == [name]Alba[/name]

[name]Oriana[/name] and [name]Alba[/name] are other names that means ‘dawn’.

Also [name]Sahar[/name] – Arabic name meaning dawn.

Also [name]Iola[/name] – means violet-colored dawn, according to one source I found.

Also, in my previous post, forgot to mention that [name]Zaria[/name] is a Slavic name meaning “morning star” or “sunrise.” In mythology, this is the name of a goddess of morning. (See ‘[name]Zarya[/name]’ (with a y) in Nameberry)

I think you have a clear plan and the ranking system is a great idea. All your names are wonderful. I could see why [name]Lark[/name] and [name]Thea[/name] are tainted so i think going with a less debated name like [name]Coral[/name] would be a better compromise. Good luck!

[name]How[/name] about Magalie as a compromise name for margaret nn [name]Mag[/name]?

Makes me also think of [name]Magnolia[/name]. It’s reminiscent of [name]Margaret[/name], is a flower/nature name, is sweetly old-fashioned.

Instead of [name]Cecilia[/name], how about:
[name]Celia[/name] (possibly means ”heavens”)

Instead of [name]Azure[/name], how about:
[name]Cyane[/name] (another ”blue” name, the name of a Sicilian nymph who lived in a blue pool)
[name]Indigo[/name] (has the really cool nn [name]Indie[/name])
[name]Aura[/name]
[name]Aqua[/name]
[name]Skye[/name]

Instead of [name]Aurora[/name], how about:
[name]Aurelia[/name] (means golden) (nn [name]Aura[/name] ??)

Instead of [name]Willoughby[/name], how about:
[name]Sequoia[/name] (which in addition to being a tree-name, actually means [name]Sparrow[/name])

Instead of [name]Lavendar[/name], how about
[name]Sage[/name] (which also reminds me of [name]Sophia[/name] because both names mean ”wisdom”)

Ones I like…pardon the repeats.

[name]Delphi[/name] (your list) and [name]Daphne[/name] (his list) would be nicely blended with [name]Delphine[/name].

[name]Marigold[/name] - If you were willing to use a different middle name. [name]Marigold[/name] [name]Blythe[/name] is nice.

[name]Elspeth[/name] - Has the “beth” sound, also the [name]Ellie[/name] sound he likes.

And one I found that I might not have seen mentioned -
“Aldora” It’s greek and means “A winged gift” It can also be spelled Aldara, but I like Aldora better. “Aldora [name]Miriam[/name]” flows nicely.

oh my gosh the second i saw your list of names I knew I had to reply. you have some of my [name]FAVORITE[/name] names on here! The best taste [name]Ive[/name] ever seen on nameberry  I hope this helps, cause your baby really needs a name!

[name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]

    • loving all THREE.
[name]Beth[/name] - i think it has lots of meaning.

[name]Ava[/name]/[name]Eva[/name]/[name]Iva[/name] -I love all three! [name]Ava[/name] is my favorite though.

Starting from the idea of [name]Lark[/name] as a nn …

[name]Laragh[/name] (nn [name]Lark[/name]) ” Irish, means bay laurel

[name]Larissa[/name] (nn [name]Lark[/name]) ” sweet, classic name that shortens nicely to [name]Lark[/name]

[name]Laretta[/name] (nn [name]Lark[/name]) ” ditto

[name]Larina[/name] (nn [name]Lark[/name]) ” ditto

Of your combined list, I love [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], and [name]Juliet[/name] the most.

Compromise names: [name]Violet[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Bethany[/name], [name]Brynn[/name].

If time is an issue, I’d personally go with something from your combined list. My husband and I are having some strong disagreements regarding the name of our unborn baby girl. It’s gotten to the point where going with anything other than names we [name]BOTH[/name] agree on feels like a waste of energy. But if you’re willing to take more time, then finding a compromise name that you both love is a good idea.

wow, wow, wow. you guys are awesome. I swear, there must be every single name I could ever possibly love on this list
Thank you. We had sort of a communication breakdown about her name last night. again. ugh. so, I think we’re shelving the issue for a few days… maybe? But, I’m coming back to this fantastic list (and I’m saving it for possible future babies. honestly. you guys are good.)

This quote comes from the recent thread ‘100 top Girls Names in the Netherlands’. I thought you might find it interesting.

"Madelief is the Dutch word for [name]Daisy[/name] We pronounce it: mah-duh-leaf.

[name]Silke[/name] is actually a [name]German[/name] name. I searched for the meaning on Google: [name]Silke[/name] means ‘heavenly’’. But I also think it might be from the English word ‘silk’! It is pronounced: [name]Sil[/name] - ke (like the ‘k’ in [name]Kate[/name]…)

  • edited to add: I just read that [name]Silke[/name] could also be short for [name]Caecilia[/name] or a female form of the Frysian name [name]Sil[/name]."

Madelief is simply gorgeous… however, one of our original criteria was that we didn’t have a ‘[name]Maddy[/name]’. We counted, among family and DS’s friends, we know seven. What a lovely name, though, thx

[name]Just[/name] curious what do u call the baby now? [name]Baby[/name] girl?

I met a woman named [name]Silkie[/name].

[name]How[/name] about [name]Maybeth[/name]? It sounds a little classic and vintage, which it seems your husband tends toward, but is still light, a little naturey (sounds like spring), and has your beloved “[name]Beth[/name]” in it.
