I think it’s really pretty but I have no idea if it has any history behind it or how long it dates back. Does anyone know anything about this name? Thanks for the feedback!
In the 19th century, the era of navigation coupled with a frenzy for botanical names saw English-speaking people, and French, giving the name “[name]Coral[/name].” [name]Coraline[/name] was an elaboration on that, but it was extremely infrequently given.
When [name]Neil[/name] Gaiman wrote his book/graphic novel, the name came into modest vogue. Most of its usage dates to the last 20 years.
The only thing I know is that is is either elaborated from [name]Coral[/name] or a variation on [name]Caroline[/name]. I don’t think it’s medieval or anything; indeed, it just seems to have come from the book and subsequent movie.
INSEE data shows [name]Coraline[/name] was first used in [name]France[/name] in 1954, it’s been somewhat popular and peaked mid-90s, there are 8,295 [name]Coraline[/name]'s in [name]France[/name].
I wouldn’'t say the book had much effect on the popularity of the name since it peaked in 1996 with 474 births and Coraline wasn’t published until 2002 when the name was already somewhat declining.
