History of Nicknames

How kind of you, I’d be honored to be included in the post!

I’ve added you to the post!

just bumping this again! i’ve gotten so much amazing input on the subject, so just popping it up again for anyone who might want it  take care of yourselves, friends!

Sounds can also be repeated. For example, you can get Kay-Kay or KK from [name_f]Kayla[/name_f].
Nicknames can be initials. For example, someone called [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u] can have the nickname AJ.
There’s a reason why [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_m]Samie[/name_m] isn’t: D and R are both related! Same with L and R
You can also see sounds going to their “voiced” versions (S → Z, F → V, T → D, etc.).
We also see removing of diphthongs sometimes (for example someone called [name_f]Kate[/name_f] could have the nickname Kat/Cat).
There’s also more nickname endings that are common (less common than “ee” though): a and oo.
There’s also stealing from other sounds: [name_f]Emily[/name_f] → [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
I’ve also noticed that you can add a “zee” sound: [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] could have the nickname “Livsie”

I’ve updated this post for the most common nicknames of 2022, as well as adding some of your input from the comments <3

I'll take the liberty to add Swedish nickname conventions

Step 1: Pick a syllable. If the original name has one, you pick everything before and including the (first) vowel. If the name has two syllables, you pick the first. If the name has more than that, you have some creative liberty.

Step 2: Pick a consonant from whatever is left of the name. Double it. If you picked K, do CK instead of KK.

Step 3: [name_m]Add[/name_m] -E or -An to the end. E is mostly for boys and [name_u]An[/name_u] is mostly for girls but there is some overlap.

Examples:
[name_m]Karl[/name_m] → Ka → Kall → [name_m]Kalle[/name_m]
[name_m]Lars[/name_m] → La → Lass → [name_m]Lasse[/name_m]
[name_m]Ludvig[/name_m] → [name_u]Lu[/name_u] → Ludd → Ludde
[name_u]Marie[/name_u] → Ma → Marr → Marre
[name_f]Margareta[/name_f] → Ma → Magg → Maggan
[name_f]Birgitta[/name_f] → Gi → Gitt → [name_f]Gittan[/name_f]

Sometimes one name has several nicknames this way. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] can be [name_m]Sebbe[/name_m] or Basse. Sometimes several people in the same class will have the same nickname (and the ones that will actually get called by it will probably be determined by popularity). For example, [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_u]Maria[/name_u], [name_m]Martin[/name_m] and [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] could all be Marre/Marran. [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] could also fight [name_u]Max[/name_u] about who should be Macke/Mackan.

A slightly old post but I had to comment.

So we have [name_f]Unice[/name_f]. We get the first syllable, which is U (pn- you, like the letter).

I take a leftover consonant, N. I double it. NN.

I add an AN.

Does that make Unnan

Yeah, [name_f]Unice[/name_f] would be Unnan, Unne, Ussan, or Usse according to those rules. The rules are very basic, so native speakers play outside them all the time. The [name_f]English[/name_f] U sound isn’t really a thing in Swedish (we have a different sound for that letter), so we might avoid it altogether and do Nissan/Nisse/Ninny for [name_f]Unice[/name_f].

To be honest, I have never met a Unice/Eunice in real life and it’s not really a name that invites nicknames, because of the foreign vowels.

I’ve never met one, or even seen one on tv (I actually don’t know how I’ve heard of [name_f]Eunice[/name_f]. Probably from an old baby name book. I looked up [name_f]Unice[/name_f] just too see it it’s real or not).

The only nickname I got was [name_u]Ice[/name_u] from an american elsewhere on the internet (I was surprised to learn that he knows how it’s pronounced considering how people where whining about them being unable to pronounce the name “Seth”)
