After thinking we were all done with babies and naming them, another little soul is on the way!
Naming baby number 5 is proving difficult. It’s important to me that this boys name fits the vibe of the sibset but doesn’t sound samey with names we’ve already used.
We have
Blythe
Keir
Solomon (Sol)
Gwen
What is our new boy’s name? Please help me out with your faves for us! X
Thank you, this list is great. You’ve hit my style on the head an several names here are my faves but have been vetoed by hubby (Abel) or already used (Julian is Keir’s middle). I have a feeling LOTR fan hubby will jump at peregrine, and I find nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u] super fun. Thanks so much for this list I’m sure I’ll come back to it again and again!
Congratulations on your wonderful news. Wow, it’s not often I see names being used from my own list. We must have some similarities in our style. Simple but unexpected. Tailored, maybe a little homespun. I’m also wondering if a name’s meaning is important to you given your current set.
[name_f]My[/name_f] first suggestion would be [name_m]Heath[/name_m] except the ‘th’ ending seems more conspicuous than other sounds so I’m not sure about repeating it within your sibling set. I think [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] could work rather well. I met a young [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] ‘Ernie’ of primary school age last year and it struck me as such a friendly name, not old fashioned at all. I’m also drawn to [name_m]Irving[/name_m]. It feels right at home with your set and would round out the different origins you’ve chosen from in the past. In the same vein, I think [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] would be a good fit. You have the options of ‘Doug’ or ‘Gus’ as nicknames continuing the one syllable pattern you’ve got going. I’ll also throw in [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] because it’s just the type of familiar but rarely used name you seem to go for. There is the strong association to [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] but I don’t mind it personally.
That’s it from my own list. One thing I noticed is that all your children’s names have soft consonants. So that’s one thing to look for. [name_f]My[/name_f] last suggestions for you are [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Amos[/name_u] and [name_u]Noel[/name_u]. All the best with your search.
I’m glad to meet someone with the same style as me! I love names that feel uncommon but simple, soft but strong. Meaning has definitely been important, but I’ll admit it’s the first thing I was willing to let slide as we added more family members!
I [name_u]Love[/name_u] LOVE [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]! I really enjoy how it balances [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], another virtue name to bookend the sibset, but not overly showy like some of the masculine virtue names can feel to me. Sadly our surname starts with St and I think I will have to let it go
I am intrigued by suggestions [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] and [name_m]Irving[/name_m] and will take some time to think on them, thank you for your ideas! your latter suggestions are almost all on my long list, and it is heartening to see you suggest them too as I am at the point where my head is spinning and I don’t know which ideas are good anymore!
@tfzolghadr thanks for this very extensive list! It’s so kind of you to take such time! For reference we have a 2syllable surname which starts with st and ends with an “ee” sound. It’s a pretty clunky name really, but what can you do!
@skylerros Haha yes I agree, ideally we’d balance Sol’s name and do a longer name with a nn. [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] is on the radar! I’m liking “a” vowel sounds for this baby cos I feel like that’s what we’re missing. Thanks for your input!
@wilkie8709 Thank you for your kind words and amazing list! Re: [name_u]Noam[/name_u], do you think the similarity to Gnome would get in the way? The name has such a gentle, composed vibe for me, I really like it.
@MichelleM thank you for your help! You’ve opened my eyes to [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] in particular with those nn suggestions. I’m not normally into x’s (they get shoehorned into places they don’t belong a lot where I am) but [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] nn dex is curiously appealing to me
I guess I didn’t even think of it till you brought it up. We have siblings [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], [name_u]Noam[/name_u], and [name_m]Omri[/name_m] in a local play group so we hear the name alot. His momma has the most beautiful accent though. I could see Americans butchering the name
@wilkie8709 [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] [name_u]Noam[/name_u] and [name_m]Omri[/name_m], how gorgeous. I’m in Australia, not USA, but we’re definitely capable of a good butchering here. I’m torn though, I really like the name.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] chiming into the [name_u]Noam[/name_u] discussion. I would be more concerned about it being mistaken for [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and in general the unease some people may have with an unfamiliar name. That said, people do adjust and learn unfamiliar names all the time. There’s not that many ways to get [name_u]Noam[/name_u] wrong either.
Also, about [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] and your surname. It could be one of those inconvenient blends that gets much better by adding a short pause between the two names. E.g. [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] /pause/ Stephens. It’s a fairly common occurrence and the pause is pretty instinctive. How often will his first name and surname be said aloud anyway? Not as much as his first name will. On the other hand, it could be the sort of thing that you can’t really see past and that’s fine too. Something to think about.
Since you like virtue names and more than one syllable, here are a few suggestions. For some reason, I just naturally seem to come up with R and O ending names for this sibset (which is super great, by the way):
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_m]Keir[/name_m], [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] and
[name_m]Waldo[/name_m] or [name_m]Walter[/name_m] “Wally” - were the first to come to mind for some reason
[name_u]Valor[/name_u]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
Endeavor “Ender”
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] “Van” or “Ender”
[name_u]Revere[/name_u]
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]
[name_m]Emeric[/name_m]
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_m]Marco[/name_m]
[name_m]Emilio[/name_m] “Emil” or “Lio/Leo”
[name_m]Alfonso[/name_m] “Alfie”
[name_m]Alonso[/name_m] “Lonnie”
[name_m]Delroy[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or [name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Henrik[/name_m]
[name_m]Roland[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilberto[/name_m]
[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] “Enzo”
[name_u]Timothy[/name_u]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m]
And if you really love [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], there’s always [name_m]Ernesto[/name_m] to get away from the repeating STs.
