So, our little boy is now 3 days old and we are nearly there with his name. We’ve agreed today to use [name_u]Loki[/name_u] for his first name and, having tried it out at home for the day, we are happy. Now to decide on his middle name and put our friends and family out of their misery! (And to stop getting texts and FB messages from everyone hounding us for the name!)
We were hoping for a middle name that meant ‘gift’ (but not gift from God) or ‘selfless’ or ‘generosity’ or something along those lines or something that has Germanic roots but we are struggling to find anything that sort of flows with [name_u]Loki[/name_u] that fits these criteria. I am SO anxious to make this decision and move on with enjoying my gorgeous little man.
What we’ve considered so far:
[name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] (think [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] means powerful in [name_m]German[/name_m] but also saw it somewhere as a type of ant in [name_m]German[/name_m]?!?!) [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_m]Miles[/name_m] (my DH found one site that said [name_m]Miles[/name_m] meant gift but now we cannot find that again…??) [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_m]Harold[/name_m] (just after DH’s grandfather who died just as we found out we were pregnant but not sure how his grandmother would feel about us using his name…and do we ask her??)
Any/all help would be so very greatly appreciated. I am starting to feel like this is a stress rather than a joy.
I think [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] sounds great. I also really like the idea of honouring the grandfather and [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_m]Harold[/name_m] is a nice mix of two very different names. I think the name Kedrick means gift and it might work as a middle for [name_u]Loki[/name_u]- [name_u]Loki[/name_u] Kedrick.
I like [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u].
For [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_m]Harold[/name_m] (which is my second pick from your names) I’d just tell her that you would like to name your son after him, and simply ask if she is comfortable with that. Usually people are touched that you would care enough to ask & that you’d like to use the name.
[name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] would be my choice. Here is some reliable information on [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m]:
Thanks for suggestions so far. The pressure from family is getting a bit much…
I just want to find a few minutes to reassure myself that there isn’t a great name that means gift of gracious or selfless or something that we haven’t found yet…
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] (“dore” part means gift)
[name_m]Doron[/name_m] (from Greek word for gift)
Heliodoro/Heliodorus (gift of the sun)
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]/[name_m]Milo[/name_m]/[name_u]Milan[/name_u] (“mil” part means gracious)
Panteleimon (“all compassionate”)
[name_m]Noble[/name_m] (self-explanatory)
Nameberry says [name_m]Shai[/name_m] means gift in Hebrew. Some other sites say that [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Richard[/name_m], [name_m]Oswald[/name_m], and [name_m]Maddock[/name_m] mean generous, but I don’t see that everywhere. On this site it looks like most [name_m]German[/name_m] names have to do with war, though [name_m]Hans[/name_m] means Gift of God. Thanks for taking the time. [name_m]Just[/name_m] knowing that there is ‘someone’ else also trying to help us get it right is comforting as we reach stress and worry over this decision. I know we just have to choose and it will be okay…but it is much harder than we thought it would be!
Here are some middle name suggestions… Finding a name that doesn’t mean “gift of God” is tricky, but I’ve found a couple that mean gift or something similar

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] - “fortunate, blessed”
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] - “divine gift” (however [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] does mean gift from God)
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m] - “blessed”
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] - “gift”
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - “bringer of treasure”
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] - “benevolent”
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] - “lucky”
[name_u]Darin[/name_u] - “precious present”
[name_u]Eden[/name_u] - “delight” (this is probably the more feminine spelling, however you could change it to [name_f]Eaden[/name_f], [name_f]Eadin[/name_f] or [name_u]Edan[/name_u] or something along those lines & still have the same meaning
My favourite combo combo with [name_u]Loki[/name_u] would probably be [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_m]Bennett[/name_m].
