[name_m]Homer[/name_m] [HO-mər] is a Greek name meaning “pledge; hostage”. Historically, it was associated with the Greek epic poet who wrote the Odyssey and the Iliad. Today, however, it is more commonly associated with the oafish [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m]. I’m not a fan of the association but I find the idea of a little boy named [name_m]Homer[/name_m] to be quite endearing. What do you think of the name? Could you see past the association?
I’d also like to get your opinion on some combos. Which, if any, of the combos below do you like? What middle name would you bestow upon a [name_m]Homer[/name_m]?
Honestly, I’m Greek and I’ve done both the Odyssey and the Iliad at school, and [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] is still my first association. I think it’d be useful if you could think of a nickname. [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Eli[/name_m] are my favorite combos. They’re a bit safer so they work with something as out there as [name_m]Homer[/name_m], and they sound good with it.
I’ve never met anyone named [name_m]Homer[/name_m] and I think the [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] association is overwhelming. It would take an amazingly handsome actor or celebrity named [name_m]Homer[/name_m] to make me see past that association. If you’re strongly attached to it, I would recommend using it as a middle name. [name_m]Hector[/name_m] also has a similar sound and origin so I would suggest it instead.
@emmievis: [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] is my first association as well but I’m not bothered. Finding a nice nickname for it is a good idea! I’ll have to do a bit of thinking on that one.
@choupette: [name_m]Hector[/name_m] is a name I’m considering as I revamp my list, so great suggestion! I’m not too strongly attached to [name_m]Homer[/name_m] at this point. Using it as a middle name is a good idea.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you all think that [name_m]Omer[/name_m] or [name_m]Omri[/name_m] would be a better alternative to [name_m]Homer[/name_m]?
I can’t imagine a young person would be pleased with being named [name_m]Homer[/name_m], and thinking of the child, I think he would be bothered by it so would choose something else. [name_m]Omri[/name_m] is nice!
I’d love to get some more opinions on [name_m]Homer[/name_m]. This little crush has pushed the name nearer to the top of my list. My current combos are [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_u]Asa[/name_u] and [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorn/name_m. Thoughts? Suggestions?
I think [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] flows beautifully (as do [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Eli[/name_m]), but I agree with the earlier posters—the [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] connection just seems too overwhelming to saddle a kid with.
@gloaming: I’m glad you like how [name_m]Homer[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] flows, it’s my top [name_m]Homer[/name_m] combo at the moment. I appreciate you sharing your opinion on the name as well.
@southern.maple: Aw, that’s the worst. You could always come to the dark side and consider it anyway…
