I absolutely love this name - I’ve always adored it, but been too afraid to use it. I have a massive love for Greek names in general, especially after I lived in Greece for some time.
The name is [name]Artemisia[/name]. (ar-teh-mi-si-ah)
I know some people think its too frilly and too much name - and most prefer [name]Artemis[/name], but I love the story behind the name. Some would see it as negative, but like the name [name]Lilith[/name] (another love of mine) I see the bearers of this name as real heroines of women. A queen, a naval commander and a famous painter - achiving things that should’ve been impossible to women!
I wouldn’t use it as a first name - but was thinking of using it with [name]Rosalin[/name] (rose-a-lin).
Our last name isn’t long and the name together isn’t longer than my name, so length doesn’t bother me. But… I’m still afraid to use it. More for my potential daughters sake. Is it a horrible name? Again, please be gentle. I know it won’t fall in most peoples taste!
I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it but in a middle name spot I think it could be pulled off. Especially if you use similar names for siblings and they all kinda mesh together it would work, I think.
Oh, I adore [name]Artemisia[/name]! It’s on my potential middle names list. [name]Artemis[/name] is cool, too, but it does sound a bit masculine, and I tend not to be fond of girls’ names that end with an “s” sound. I think [name]Rosalin[/name] [name]Artemisia[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is amazing.
Its not my cup of tea. It seems to me like one of those names that sounds fantastic and exotic when a native speaker says it or when I pronounce it in my head, but saying it out loud it just doesn’t come out right. It just seems more like a guilty pleasure name than a name to really use.
I have trouble spitting it out, so I wouldn’t suggest using it up front. As a middle, though, I think it’s fine. I absolutely adore [name]Lux[/name] and I love just about any [name]Rose[/name] variant, so the combo works for me. I think Roseline would be prettier though with the same pronunciation.
Tbh, I think you might be right about Roseline [name]Artemisia[/name] [name]Lux[/name] being prettier, but I don’t like the “Leen” ending. It sounds so nasal when I say it (I admit, my voice is very squeaky, so any “-een” names tend to become very whiny)
I feel like you can still use the same pronunciation as you would for [name]Rosalin[/name] with Roseline. It’s like how some people say [name]Madeline[/name] with the -[name]Lin[/name] ending. [name]May[/name] not be what it was supposed to be but it’s generally accepted enough that I don’t think it would be an issue.
It makes me think of the artist [name]Artemisia[/name] Gentileschi. And she is definitely a badass namesake! I would love to meet a little [name]Artemisia[/name].
[name]Artemisia[/name] is a ravishing name and [name]Artemisia[/name] I of Caria is one of the strongest females in history I can think of. I actually have it on my own list of middles and I totally wouldn’t mind using it.
Generally, I prefer [name]Rosalind[/name] because I think that -d is softening the name out a bit, but [name]Rosalin[/name] could work.
I wouldn’t personally use it myself but I find it beautiful on someone else’s baby. It’s elegant and unique in a historical way, it’s the type of name you can wear with pride.
[name]Artemisia[/name] is pronounced “ar-tuh-MEE-zhuh.” Or anyway that’s how my horticulturist mother pronounces it.
[name]Artemisia[/name]/wormwood is a great plant. Good for making malaria drugs and absinthe, and repelling moths… It’s beautiful to look at and touch and smell - silvery velvet clouds of foliage. My mother’s garden is always full of it, even in the wintertime, because it’s so hardy.
I think it’s a great name, especially with the [name]Artemis[/name] association. [name]Rosalin[/name] and [name]Artemisia[/name] together is botanical name overload to me.
From your names, I might combine it with snow, because I love the image of mounds of dove-grey artemisia dusted with snow.
tiggerian, when I scrolled over your post on the forum page I was like “what name? [name]Artemisia[/name]?”… what a surprise when I opened it!
[name]Artemisia[/name] is gorgeous! ([name]Artemis[/name] is too, not sure which I prefer) Though I would pronounce it ar-teh-meezh-ah. I don’t know of any of the references you’re mentioning, but they seem like wonderful women. I also like your personal connection of having lived in Greece. [name]Rosalin[/name] [name]Artemisia[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is a beautiful combination and I would be over the moon if I met someone named that.
I think its beautiful. Keep in mind that I’m Greek and I know a girl named [name]Artemisia[/name]. I have loved this name for a long time too. And the combo is beautiful. [name]Lux[/name] is so spunky. [name]Rosalin[/name] isn’t my favorite, but its beautiful and so underused. If you really love it than use it.
I like it, but I vastly prefer [name]Artemis[/name]. It’s based solely on personal tastes though, as I generally dislike elaborate -a ending girls names.
I read a book years ago and the main character was called [name]Artemisia[/name], I think it was about the painter? I can’t remember now, but I do remember the character was a strong figure.
