Honest opinion. Has Elliot become more of a girl's name?

I work at a daycare so I see all sorts of names used in any way you can imagine. I love the name [name]Elliot[/name] for a boy, especially used as a sibling name with [name]Oliver[/name] which has always been my boyfriend and I’s favorite. But lately I can’t get past [name]Elliot[/name] being used as a girls name. It’s just become hard for me to pair it with a little boy any more which is frustrating because I don’t want to use it for a girl. I was just wondering if I was alone on this and just being crazy or if it’s just kind of being more associated with girls as of late with the more unisex name trend that’s come over everyone. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. -[name]Katie[/name].

No, [name]Elliot[/name] has not become more of a girl’s name. [name]Just[/name] because it is used on girls is not a reason for you to drop it off your list for a boy. That is how names become “gone to the girls.”

Let’s take a look at some statistics from the 2011 SSA list.

Girls named [name]Elliot[/name]: 711

This includes spellings [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], Elliette, Elliet, and [name]Eliot[/name].

Boys named [name]Elliot[/name]: 3379

This includes spellings [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], and [name]Eliot[/name].

Your answer is obvious.

Thank you for the numbers, but I was looking more for someone who had encountered both to see if it just seemed to fit girls better. I understand that it has been associated with boys much longer and of course it is still a boys name. I do not doubt that, but since I’ve seen it with girls its that it almost seems to stick more as a girl name. Twas just a thought that I was interested in feed back on.

To me it’s all boy. At my son’s daycare I even have seen [name]Evan[/name] on girls! At the end of the day you just have to pick what you like and not worry about it. My son’s name is [name]Jesse[/name] and some people said it’s a girl’s name, don’t use it. I like it better on a boy than a girl, so I used it. Good luck and don’t stress about it!

Boy.

[name]Elliot[/name] is hard for me to even visualize on a girl. Like [name]Fred[/name], I suppose it’s not impossible, but I don’t like it at all.

Boy to me too. A lot of the [name]Elliot[/name] girls I’ve heard of go by the nn [name]Ellie[/name] most of the time. Which kinda makes me think even the parents think [name]Elliot[/name] is too masculine, but I can’t be sure of that.

no, I think [name]Elliot[/name] is good for a boy

I’ve only known male Elliots so no, I don’t consider it a girl’s name at all. According to the social security list, the name only entered the top 1000 for girls this past year and even then, it’s only at 875 which is way lower than the male ranking of 272 (and that’s not counting the Elliott spelling which ranks 305 for boys and doesn’t rank for girls at all).

I met a baby girl named [name]Elliot[/name] and I still don’t like it on a girl.

To me, it’s all boy. Always has been, always will be.

I agree with the pp who says most girls with it go by [name]Ellie[/name].

I know a little [name]Elliott[/name] who’s a boy, I do not know any girls with this name.

[name]Elliot[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] is a wonderful sib-set!

Thanks so much, everyone has been very helpful. Funny that [name]Evan[/name] was mentioned. Boyfriend and I talked about that one tonight. He hasn’t given me much feedback but I really really like it.

Absolutely not!

If I met a girl [name]Elliot[/name] (which I never have), I’d think ‘Oh, poor you…that’s a boys’ name’.

If I met a boy [name]Elliot[/name], I would think, ‘Oh, awesome name!’

I love [name]Elliott[/name] for a boy! I can’t even picture it on a girl, I don’t even think of it as a unisex name. [name]Elliott[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] is such a great sib set.

[name]Elliot[/name] is ALL boy. I don’t know any [name]Elliot[/name]'s. I know one little girl named [name]Jesse[/name] and that name is still all boy to me, feel bad for the little girl.

I know one girl [name]Elliot[/name] and one boy [name]Elliot[/name]. E.T. was on last night does that count as two boys?

No, I don’t think so. I know there are a few on this site who like [name]Elliot[/name] for a girl… but I’ve never met a female [name]Elliot[/name] in real life, don’t know of anyone who has actually named their daughter [name]Elliot[/name] and have met a few boy [name]Elliot[/name]'s, so I’d say it’s still more of a boy’s name.

In the Hebrew school set, [name]Eliot[/name] is still be used as the American name for boys with the Hebrew names of [name]Eli[/name], [name]Elisha[/name], [name]Eliyahu[/name], and [name]Eliezer[/name], so I’ve never met a girl named [name]Eliot[/name]. I think it’s still primarily best for a boy.

As for the girl’s name “[name]Jesse[/name],” just tell them your name comes from [name]King[/name] [name]David[/name]'s father in the Bible, not the nn [name]Jessie[/name] for [name]Jessica[/name] or [name]Jessamine[/name]…

I could see it on either… but that might be because I love “Scrubs”. That aside I think it leans towards boys, and I love [name]Elliot[/name] on a little boy.

I definitely still consider it a boy’s name. When I do hear of a girl named [name]Elliot[/name] I find it strange (although if it is of any comfort, I’ve never actually met one). [name]Elliot[/name] is on my list for future boy names. I love it with [name]Oliver[/name] a lot

I immediately see a boy. I have seen a few girls named [name]Elliot[/name], but I don’t find it particularly appealing.
