We like this name for our daughter, but not sure what others would think. Our son is named “Chas” after Charleston, SC. Folly is an island near Charleston where my family has been vacationing since my mother was a little girl. Almost every summer and enough so that we have friends who are residents there. We plan to continue the tradition of yearly family vacations with our children. Folly is a very easy going beach town that has managed to avoid that very “touristy” feel that you get with most U.S. beaches now. We were think “Rosemarie” for the middle name (in honor of her two aunts).
I think it’s cute. It reminds me of [name_f]Holly[/name_f], a name I love, and Filly, a baby female horse which are adorable! Although, given the MN, I like [name_f]RoseMarie[/name_f] Folly better. With Folly as a MN not a first. I think it just flows better.
Folly literally means “lack of good sense; foolishness”…that being said, I wouldn’t name my daughter Folly, no way.
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] is very pretty, though. Perhaps [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] Folly would work better? Otherwise, I’d consider a name that honors “Folly”, but is it’s own name…though I can’t think of any names that would work off the top of my head. Maybe a name that has a meaning tied to the ocean/beach? I think that [name_f]Marisa[/name_f] and [name_f]Marina[/name_f] are both lovely choices, both meaning “by the sea”.
Actually, “[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]” means “dew of the sea” in Latin, so that could be both an honor name for her aunts and an honor name honoring your family’s vacation spot!
I think [name_f]Marisa[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] and [name_f]Marina[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] both sound beautiful, with a slight preference for [name_f]Marisa[/name_f].
Best of luck!
Big no to Folly. To name a child Folly would literally be folly.
I like @alexandra nicole the suggestion [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], that seems really fitting! Maybe [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], to fit in the island idea?
And lol @ hufflepuff
I think Folly and [name_m]Chas[/name_m] are cute siblings. I wouldn’t use Folly personally but I think if you like it, then go for it.
Considering the meaning of the word, I have to say no to Folly. She’d definitely cop her fair share of teasing, especially once the kids got older and learnt what Folly meant. Not a good idea [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] is lovely though
Agreed, Folly should be a no-go. I like word names, but negative words are not the best idea imo. It’s like having a son and naming him “Fool”
My thoughts too. I think it would make a wonderful, whimsical, slightly crazy middle name, but as a first name I just find it weird.
No…
No - it might be cute on a baby, but it won’t age well. I think the suggestions you received were good ones.
Good luck!
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
Thank you all! Looks like it’s back to the drawing board for us. We may go with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] as her daddy is half Argentine.
This. [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] it away in the middle spot if you’re intent on using it, but using it as a first name seems like a mean thing to do to a child. She will be questionned and teased about it as she grows up for sure, since it’s a negative word with such a transparent meaning.
I like a PP’s suggestion of [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestions relating to islands: [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f]!
You could also use a longer “F” name and nickname her Folly:
[name_f]Fallyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Fallon[/name_u]
[name_f]Fawn[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
I’d say something less obvious than folly. Maybe “Edge” for “edge of [name_u]America[/name_u]”. Or [name_u]Dune[/name_u] as middles.
Hiya,
Personally, I like Folly, but like others have said it might not be suitable.
I only have one suggestion that hasn’t already been put forward. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Foley[/name_m] instead of Folly. I know it doesn’t quite have the connections you spoke of, but as in other ‘honor’ names these days it could work.
[name_m]Foley[/name_m] (foe-lee) [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] sound pretty nice, I think.
I normally support people’s choices including word names, but this is like calling your child Foolish or Mistake.
If somebody says “that was my folly” it means that was my foolishness or my mistake. Or a ditch as well, that is another meaning for it in landscaping.
I know not everybody is familiar with the word, and that you think of it as a familiar place name with lovely connotations, but I personally think you would be limiting your child with this name - they could never visit the UK for a start!
Folly…lack of good sense…a mistake.
A child named Folly… Did your parents name you that because they forgot to use birth control?
She’ll get tired of that pretty quickly.
And will you follow up with little [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and Sumter? There are lots of islands off [name_m]Charleston[/name_m].
Folly is another name for a gazebo too.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f], named after the [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u]? I guess [name_f]Ashleigh[/name_f] or [name_f]Ashlee[/name_f] would be too common.
“It’s [name_f]Polly[/name_f] spelled with an F” and “No, I wasn’t a mistake.” (poor kid, LOL)
