I am throwing my guilty pleasure name out there for feedback. I am obsessed with the name [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. I have loved it since I was 12 and watched “The [name_m]Saint[/name_m]” starring [name_u]Val[/name_u] Kilmer. The way the young [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Rossi[/name_m] character said the name was just gorgeous. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Shue, another actor in the movie, actually named her own daughter [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] later! It has history and literature and is part of that “vintage” name trend. Plus, it has recently come back as a little girl in Despicable Me!
However.
Whenever I try this name out with family or friends, I get nothing but upturned noses. :-?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it will grow on them? Does anybody out there like it at all?!
I used to dislike the sound, but I am come to appreciate [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. She is feminine without being frilly, but that G helps her stay Grounded, making for a bold choice.
I think it has a pretty sound.
In terms of sound, you may want to consider [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]’ cousins: [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Adelais[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Amaris[/name_f], or even [name_u]Damaris[/name_u].
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] grew on me. Maybe it will grow on your relatives.
I love the meaning of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and I like the way it’s pronounced in [name_m]French[/name_m] or Spanish, but I really dislike [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] as a nn so that’s always steered me a bit away from it. But I think it’s an elegant name due for a comeback! I some what prefer [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and really love [name_f]Avis[/name_f] as an alternative.
I like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! It’s got a sweet spunky sound, and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is super cute, and [name_f]Nessie[/name_f] is almost just as cute! Go for it! The name will grow on your friends and family!
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is so intelligent and serious but down-to-earth.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] not worry about others’ opinions. My sister told me, months after the fact, that she originally hated the name we chose for our daughter. She said, however, after meeting our daughter that she finally understood why we chose it and she thought it was beautiful and perfect.
In other words, use a name you love, and you’ve clearly loved this name for awhile - it’s not a flash-in-the-pan name - and your friends and family will all love it, too.
I understand the charm and personally like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], but I also get why people who aren’t into names tend to react poorly. It has some of the heaviness of vintage names like [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] or [name_f]Helga[/name_f] that people tend to think of as “ugly.” I think of it as one step harder to bring back than [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], just because of the tendency of the “s” ending to hiss a bit.
I would put [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] in a category I call the Clunky Uglies, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthwhile name. I don’t personally like it, but I like other names I’ve put in this category like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. That hard /g/ to /n/ sound in the middle isn’t in my taste.
I would also consider this a “Clunky Ugly,” but that category tends to hold some of my favorite names, like [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], Hesper, and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], among others. I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is earthy, feminine, quiet, and strong. I love the nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f]. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let people turn you off! They’ll get over it.
I think it’s fine. I guess if you wanted a similar option with a slightly softer sound, the Hispanic version [name_f]Inez[/name_f]/[name_f]Ines[/name_f] might be one to consider?
I love it, and would definitely consider using it myself. [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is a gorgeous nickname too. I’ve had a negative reaction but didn’t put me off, they just don’t appreciate a quality name
I love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] <3
And I prefer Ness, Nessie or Nessa for nicknames, Aggie makes me think of aggression and angry.
Agnes is fairly popular in Norway, and in the top 20 in Denmark.
Don’t let negative opinions sway you, most people associate names with people they’ve met with that name, so when your family and friends meet your daughter Agnes, the name will most likely grow more beautiful to them, like others have said.
It seems funny to me that so many people hate [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], but I never hear complaints about soundalike [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]!
Personally, I find both nicknames precious and I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is a great name. If it ends up being your top choice, don’t let others’ negative opinions sway you: either it’ll grow on them (which, as others have said, it probably will) or they’ll get over it.
I love it. I think it’s so strong and beautiful. I also love [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], I think the [name_f]Ag[/name_f] sound is actually really musical.
I am personally not fond of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. I am not fond of the sound or the look. As to family and friends not loving a name, family and friends will come around once the little one is born. They will adore that child no matter what. I also couldn’t care less what family and friends think. We all have our own likes and dislikes, and that is a great thing. I am sure you do not adore/love all their tastes in names.
I like it a lot, and my partner suggested it without knowing I liked it, so there are at least two fans out here! It’s earthy and simple and upbeat to my ear. I like [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] and Nes(s)/[name_f]Nessa[/name_f]/[name_f]Nessie[/name_f] as nicknames but don’t feel that it needs a nn.
Your long-standing affection for it definitely matters. Family and friends will not turn up their noses at your daughter, whatever you name her, so choose something you love. Everyone else will most likely grow to love her name as their love for her grows.
Also, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] sound so good together, as do [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f] and Ness!
