Honest opinions on Amber!

[name_f]Amber[/name_f] is one of the few names hubby and I can agree on. It’s actually his favorite girl name. I know it’s not a Nameberry favorite, but I’d still like your honest opinions. Personally, I love the name and think it has a beautiful meaning however I am concerned with all the negative connotations the name has. I don’t want to stop from using it simply because most people have stereotyped it as slutty and trashy, but at the same time I don’t want her to be relentlessly teased growing up. Thanks in advance for all your responses

I think it’s a pretty name, but it’s not one I would choose nowadays not because it has trashy connotations (to me it does not) but because it feels a little dated. It’s more a name that women my age would have so it would feel odd on a baby to me.

I wouldn’t say she’d be teased, but it definitely is a dated name.

I like it! I’ve had a character (not really a story character, because it’s not written down…more of an alter ego, maybe?) named [name_f]Amber[/name_f] since I was young. I think it sounds young and a little sassy, but wouldn’t say its trashy or too dated. With the right middle name, I think it could work in 2014, no problem. (

I think it is dated.

It’s nice. A bit dated, but I see the nature-y appeal. I actually only know one [name_f]Amber[/name_f], about 12, she’s really lovely (and born into a very artsy family).

[name_u]Ember[/name_u] gets quite a lot of recognition on Nameberry; I guess it’s got a similar earthy feel to [name_f]Amber[/name_f] but feels fresher. I personally don’t like it as much.

[name_f]Amber[/name_f] is definitely dated, and that has kept me from adding this otherwise pretty name to my list. I don’t think that dated is necessarily a bad thing though. Dated names have some key qualities including the fact that they are familiar without being popular, which I think is a huge plus! If you and your husband really love the name, then I think you should go for it!

I always find babynamesworld to be VERY helpful when you’re actually considering a name for your child. Here’s the results from a survey taken by people who are named [name_f]Amber[/name_f]:

It seems that most are happy, would recommend, and were rarely bullied due to their name.

It does seem dated on a baby, but if you love it…use it!

I agree, go for it! I have a name that was fairly common in my parents’ generation and unheard of in mine (I’ve yet to meet anyone of my age with it) and it never bothered me in any way.

I think it is slightly dated, and the only one I know is a girl who never does any work but still complains all the time when teachers give her bad grades. And then there is the teen mom [name_f]Amber[/name_f]. Really my only two associations. I really like [name_u]Ember[/name_u] though, I think it has a softer sound.

[name_f]Amber[/name_f] feels dated to me. I like [name_u]Ember[/name_u] as an alternative, and I know a couple that plans on naming their future daughter [name_u]Ember[/name_u] [name_f]Lux[/name_f], which I think is beautiful! Another alternative could be [name_u]Harbor[/name_u]/[name_f]Arbor[/name_f]? I think those names are really cool.

I have a two year old niece named [name_f]Amber[/name_f], and I was surprised by the choice at first because it does seem a little outdated, but it is a sweet name that suits her well.

I’d suggest picking the middle name carefully though - [name_f]Amber[/name_f] can lean towards trashy in many people’s eyes, so you probably want to pair it with a middle name that isn’t also thought of that way to minimise those thoughts.

I think [name_f]Amber[/name_f] might come back around a little because of the princess sister on [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] the First. Personally, I am not a fan.

I love the name [name_f]Amber[/name_f]! It is so beautiful and it its great that you and your husband agree on it. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t listen to the negative comments on it since its a cool name.

It is dated, but if it’s one of the only names you and your husband can agree on I think you should use it anyway.

I think it has a dated, 90s feel.

I’m nor really a fan, but it could work well as a mn.

It’s not a terrible name or anything but it’s definitely dated. I immediately think of the 80’s.

It does seem a bit dated but it should carry through nicely as it’s a classic name. It also fits nicely with other current nature names. If you love it, go for it!

Hate it… Sorry. I wouldn’t say It sounds slutty or trashy but it sounds like a 27 yr old girl that works at Walmart. It is too dated and not in a good way. But the good news is your don’t know me and the ppl that you do know who don’t like it will get over it. She’s not anyone else’s baby. She’s yours
