I really love the name [name]Bodhi[/name] but have some reservations due to its strong Buddhist connection. I consider my self a spiritual person but do not have any strong affiliation with any particular religion or spiritual teaching. If I had to choose one i identify with most on a personal level it would be Buddhism however I far from a strict practising Buddhist I love [name]Bodhi[/name] for its laid back surfer vibe, it’s sound and its strong connection to the fig tree which has significance to my partner and I. I have also loved nn [name]Bo[/name]/[name]Beau[/name] since forever which to me has a western vibe! What do you berries think… Is it too religious/new age pretentious in your opinion or do you just see it as a cool name with a surfy laid back surfy vibe?
Also we already have a [name]Matilda[/name]…do you think [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name] sound like a really odd sibset pairing ([name]Tilly[/name] & [name]Bo[/name])
Other potential siblings [name]Aurora[/name] ([name]Rory[/name]), [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Luna[/name] (lulu), [name]Marigold[/name] (goldie) [name]Georgia[/name] ([name]Gigi[/name]), [name]Heidi[/name], [name]Tallulah[/name] for girls and [name]Boone[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Declan[/name], [name]Sullivan[/name] (van), [name]Wolfgang[/name], [name]Cato[/name] for boys… What would you pair with [name]Bodhi[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] to tie sibset? Other suggestions welcome?
I’ve encountered this word before and when I got on Nameberry, I was honestly surprised that it is being used as a name. It sounds more new age than surfy laid back to me.
I have only ever heard this name once. I was watching a program about a girl called [name]January[/name] Schofield who had schizophrenia and her little brother was a [name]Bodhi[/name]. I do like it but I would never use it.
I don’t care for it. It’s a bit too “look how new age!” I am. Are you Australian? [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name] wouldn’t strike me as an unusual combo at all here.
I don’t like [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name] (feel mismatched) but I do like [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Finn[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name].
I know LOTS of Matildas (!) their siblings are [name]Finn[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Banjo[/name], [name]May[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Arlo[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Audrey[/name].
Sorry but I really don’t like bodhi. [name]Matilda[/name] is my daughters name and I still love it. We are hoping for a boy next and love the names [name]Finn[/name], sawyer, jasper and atlas. Good luck
[name]Bodhi[/name] looks misspelled, but sounds fine. [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Bo[/name] work wonderfully, [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name]…less so.
I would stay away because a common misspelling would be Body. (Think [name]Brody[/name])
Speaking of that, what about [name]Brody[/name]? Same feel, but a little less “new age” and a better fit with [name]Matilda[/name]. (surname names were hip when [name]Matilda[/name] was) [name]Bo[/name] could still be a nickname.
If you aren’t Buddhist, it does sound a bit as though you are saying “[name]Aren[/name]'t we spiritual?” It may represent a connection that is important to the parents, but that connection may not exist for the child himself.
I also have reservations about naming a child something that ends in the “ee” sound. That sound suggests nicknames/childhood/immaturity. Can you be a lawyer or a doctor named [name]Bodhi[/name] (or [name]Poppy[/name])? Maybe in 30 years, that sort of thing will be common.
A girl I went to high school with had a son named Bodie (pronounced the same as [name]Bodhi[/name]). At first, I thought it was strange and a typo for [name]Brodie[/name] as she definitely has no affiliation with the Buddhist culture. Now that he’s 2, the name has really grown on me. I’m not one for changing spellings of names - I’m more of keeping the tradition - however, in this case, I really prefer her chosen spelling. Perhaps if she had a stronger connection to Buddhism then [name]Bodhi[/name] would make more sense as a spelling; however, in her case, Bodie is the way to go.
I absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Matilda[/name]. I really think [name]Matilda[/name] and Bodie would make a great sibset. [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Bo[/name] are adorable.
I do hear you about changing the spelling, I understand your suggestion and have even considered spelling it Bodie… but I’m 100 percent that f i used it I would definately spell it [name]Bodhi[/name]! Part of what I love about the name is the beautiful and strong meaning behind it and its connection to the fig tree. Bodie, though it sounds the same and gives cute nn. [name]Bo[/name] is without meaning and strength [name]IMO[/name]. Plus I guess I’m a bit of an all or nothing girl
I think [name]Bodhi[/name] is getting trendy. People keep talking about it like it is super unique and original but I have met three little baby Bodhis in the last year.
[name]Bodhi[/name] is really growing on me lately, ever since I learned about the meaning and history of the name and its associations with enlightenment. I definitely get that sort of “surfer zen” vibe from it.
I think if you love the name, you should totally use it. There is no taboo on using a name that is prominent in another religion (unless in a case like [name]Cohen[/name], where it is offensive to the practitioners of that religion) There are tons of Michaels and [name]Daniels[/name] and Joshuas and Pauls in the world, I doubt every single one of them was born to a devoutly [name]Christian[/name] family. I also don’t see anything wrong with the new age associations. The great thing about the new age movement is that it pulls truth and spirituality and meaning from multiple different sources, there is room for everyone and everything. If the name feels right to you, that is what matters!
I love it. Go against the tide and do something unusual and unexpected. I have a neighbour who is a very hipster older guy called [name]Bodhi[/name]. Cool name. Much better in my opinion than current favourites like [name]Asher[/name]. He will either grow in to it, redefine it or change it. If you like it do it
This is EXACTLY what I think when I hear [name]Bodhi[/name]. Not the fig thing – I had no idea about that, and I also had no idea of its connection to Buddhism, though it doesn’t surprise me just because of the spelling. The only thing I think is surfer, laid back, cool, chill – maybe because of [name]Bodhi[/name] [name]Miller[/name] (?). I’m not totally sure of his name, but I think there was a surfer or skateboarder or something with that name. I also love the nn [name]Bo[/name]. [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name] go perfectly well together in my opinion, as do [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Bo[/name]. Gorgeous. Cute. [name]Unique[/name]. Perfect. [name]Do[/name] it.
I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Bodhi[/name]! I also have a [name]Matilda[/name] (nn [name]Tillie[/name]), and [name]Bodhi[/name] was on my list until my husband vetoed it. He said he couldn’t get over the association with [name]Patrick[/name] Swayze’s character in Point Break (which is where the surfer connection comes from, I think). But, [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Bo[/name] would be such a cute sib set!!
