Honest opinions on my "considering" list

Sorry for the length. Didn’t anticipate how long this post would be. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

These names are all up for “consideration” to make it onto my “official” list - aka, I’m passively mulling them over to see if I like them enough to add to my actual list! Please give me your brutally honest opinions and let me know which ones should be “promoted”!

I’ve included my current list below if you want to get a sense of my style, although it’s a little varied and I don’t particularly care about my names “matching”.

Summary

The “enter” and “exit” were me keeping track of new names to the list or ones I’m not feeling as much anymore.

Alannah: This one is very close to being added to my list. I do like Alana and Alanna for other people, but something about them just seemed a little common/plain. Adding the h at the end really gives this name the life I think it should have. I just don’t know if it’s worth it because it’s pronounced the same?
Amaryllis: It’s beautiful and striking for sure, but I’m still deciding if I love it for me. Also I can’t help but hear a little bit of “am a realist”/“am the realest”.
Anais/Anaise: Wouldn’t use the diacritic in America. I know Anais is the traditional spelling but there’s something I like about an -ise ending.
Ann: First name only. A little bit different from most names on my list, I tend to skew more modern, but I feel like Ann is unexpected. Just feel like it’s also a bit plain.
Ariel: Probably would just be a middle name due to its popularity.
Ashton: Love it on a girl. I grew up with a female Ashton and never met a male (or heard of Ashton Kutcher) until I was a teenager, so it skews solidly unisex to me. Maybe it’s a bit harsh though?
Belladonna: One of my favorite names to say out loud but not sure if it’s even usable?
Bernadette: It has that lovely, lilting quality like Belladonna. Again, not my usual style since I tend to skew more modern. I really want to like it for myself but I think I may just like it for others…
Blossom: It’s giving Powerpuff Girls and/or character from a movie/cartoon/book. But quite pretty. I just can’t commit to it.
Cerelia: I used to have it on my list but I demoted it quite a while ago. I just can’t say goodbye to it, though, but I don’t know if I like it enough. It’s beautiful but also feels a little wispy/insubstantial.
Christiana: Very close to going on my list. I love Chris- names and this one feels very elegant.
Christine: Tbh, it would be on my list already if I didn’t have a close friend named Christine. I love her, but I wouldn’t name my kid after her, so not sure it would be usable.
Corinne: Love this underrated name, but again do I love it for myself or others…?
Courtenay: Would probably just be a middle. I have a feeling this one won’t be very popular LOL. I do tend to like 80s/90s names. I am pronouncing this one with a glottal stop in the middle, like “cor-ney” (think like the pause between “uh-oh”). Yes, I know it’s “dated”. Yes, I know the spelling and pronunciation are unnecessarily difficult. But I like it anyway.
Eleusine: Probably GP territory but maybeeee a middle?
Eris: It’s really cool and I like seeing it. Is it cool enough for me tho… I also like Aris too, and think it would make a cool middle.
Eugenie: “YOO-zhuh-nee”. Again, a little old fashioned and I usually strongly dislike Eu- names but this one is quite intriguing to me.
Geneve: jen-NEVE.
Genevie: jen-NEVE-ee.
Jacey: This one was unpopular in the Quick Poll Thread lmao I feel it’s a little nicknamey but I just can’t axe it for some reason.
Jasmine: I used to love Jasmine but it did feel a little plain because I grew up in the 90s/00s when it was popular. Now I feel like it’s a little more rare/unexpected. It has a beautiful sound and imagery. However, I really like names that are somehow eye-catching in a way, and I’m not sure if Jasmine fulfills that.
Magda: A wildcard pick that I’m not sure works in the US?
Martina: Very close to being added to my list. I love saying this name and think it’s underrated.
Noelene: I’m pronouncing it with three syllables and would probably just use it for a middle. I really do like Noelle too, but find it’s a little too plain/expected for my tastes. Not sure if it’s a quick name crush or if I really should consider it.
Paulina: Is it elegant or frumpy?
Rebekah: This spelling is zippy and fun. I don’t mind that it’s “dated”. I don’t know if it’s exciting enough to add to my list.
Ria: Quite insubstantial on its own but I’ve seen it used as a standalone name.
Sable: I love the nature connection (to the animal) and it gives me similar vibes to Salem. I want to love it. Somehow, though, I hear “stable”… and I’m not sure I can get over that.
Shaina/Shayna/Shaine: I don’t know if the sound is too harsh. Shaine I know would probably be unpopular and I would only use it as a middle. I like it as a fun one-syllable middle, a la Rae, Bree, Faye, etc.
Tahnee: “TAH-nee”. I was watching a show with a contestant with this name and found it so curious that I posted a topic about it a few weeks ago, not because I liked it for myself but because I wanted to know others’ thoughts. It really stayed on my mind, however. It’s unusual and distinct for sure but has a really curious sound.
Timber: I find it pretty but don’t know if it’s more of a name for, like, a dog or a wolf. Maybe as a middle? I already have Kimber, Kimberley, etc. on my list.
Viridian: It’s like Vivian but more “exotic”.
Yma: “EE-muh”. Honestly, probably not realistically usable. Would def just be a middle if it was. It looks a bit awkward written down. I kinda like how it stops and makes you think, though. It’s one of those names I just feel bad axing because I feel like it has potential.
Zinnia: Again, one of those names I love but still trying to figure out if I love it for me.

Alannah: I like it spelled this way too - it was the first way I ever saw it spelled so it’s stuck in my head. It gives me the feel of Tallulah or Delilah, but it has a slightly more of a stronger feel - a bit glitzy and glam but perfectly rough-and-tumble too

Amaryllis: This is very bright, pretty and elegant - it feels like it could fit in amongst your middle names, perhaps paired with a more grounded first? Like Darcy Amaryllis, Faye Amaryllis, or Eve Amaryllis?

I wouldn’t have thought of that!

Anais/Anaise: an intriguing and distinct sounding name! The Anaise spelling does feel like it fits your list!

Ann: I admit it does feel a little bland compared your other names - a bit too - no frills and no fuss

Ariel: I think this would be a great middle - I like the Shakespeare links and the meaning

Ashton: unexpected on your list but I kind of like it! A big rugged, but charming too. Amberley, Cypress, Keeley, Kimber, Holiday, Holland, Kaia or Skye would all work as sibs

Belladonna: it is good fun to say, though it is quite witchy and dark - perhaps as a middle?

Bernadette: it’s grown on me. I think it could fit on your list, especially with nn Bebe or Birdie, but if it isn’t quite working, I’d keep it on the backburner for now

Blossom: as a first name, I find it just a tad too cutesy but it makes a bright, cool middle

Cerelia: I love Cerelia - such a lovely meaning, and to me, it feels magical and celestial!

Christiana: this does very much feel like one I’d see on your list. It’s not my personal taste, but it is a bold, yet familiar sounding name

Christine: I think I’d stick to other Chris-names in this case

Corinne: I enjoy Corinne - there’s something slightly witchy but also artsy and poetic

Courtenay: it’s one that’s grown on me after meeting a sweet Courtney, and I also feel like it’s one that you really like for your list.

Eleusine: - how do you pronounce it? Either way, I can see it fitting as a middle

Eris: love this sound of this - it is very cool

Eugenie: I want to like it but it reminds me of Eugenics…

Geneve: hmm, not sure on it - feels a bit cut off

Genevie: I prefer this one! Fun to say and sparky, sleek and pretty

Jacey: I like the sound of this - a bit of Jessie, a bit of Casey, a bit of Jade and Gracie.

Jasmine: I like the strength and floral feel of Jasmine. It doesn’t strike me as plain. Yasmin/Yasmine or Jessamine might also work?

Magda: a bit harsh but it does have a distinctive sound

Martina: a very you feeling name. It is fun to say!

Noelene: I’d give it a little time - it is an intriguing looking name

Paulina: It feels elegant to me - it reminds me of Villette - kind of dainty, but sophisticated

Rebekah: this spelling feels quite sparky and cool

Ria: I’ve known a Ria! And a Rhea with the same pn! It’s cute but strong

Sable: this has such a warm and earthy feel - I really like it. But if you hear ‘stable’ it might not be the one for your list

Shaina/Shayna/Shaine: I don’t love Shaine but it would make a nice middle. Shayna is more appealing to me - I knew one and it suited her well

Tahnee: I do really enjoy the distinct and cool sound of this - sort of gentle and earthy, but modern too

Timber: It reminds me of something someone would cool a Timothy as a nickname

Viridian: intriguing and magical

Yma: I don’t love it if I’m honest - a bit incomplete looking for me

Zinnia: I think it’s zippy and fun but I’m not 100% sure it fits on your list :person_shrugging:

[name_f]Alannah[/name_f] → I love this name! So bright and sunny, and familiar yet not overly popular. I think it makes sense to use this spelling if it’s your favorite – Alannah/Alana/Alanna has enough spellings that which ever one you use, people will probably ask about the spelling sometimes so why not use the one you love.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] → I’ve never considered “am a realist” but I do hear it now that you point it out. I think [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is pretty and floral, but I don’t love it – while the flower is my main association, something about that “is” ending makes me think of illnesses unfortunately.

Anais/Anaise → I think [name_f]Anais[/name_f] is really pretty! [name_f]Anaise[/name_f] with the E makes me think of the spice anise. Not a bad association, just not one I have with the [name_f]Anais[/name_f] spelling. I do think [name_f]Anaise[/name_f] might make the pronunciation clearer for people unfamiliar with the name, though.

[name_f]Ann[/name_f] → I think [name_f]Ann[/name_f] is sweet, but I prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. I do worry that an [name_f]Ann[/name_f] might find her name more dated/plain, especially if her siblings had names like [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], lol. But there’s something about the simplicity of [name_f]Ann[/name_f] that appeals to me, it feels warm and welcoming and kind.

[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] → I like [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]! [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] and bubbly. It’s elegant and feels modern despite its long history. I do think you might get both “air-ee-uhl” and “ah-ree-elle” pronunciations, as I wouldn’t know which to assume from the spelling. I also have a feeling it would get [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid references but nothing wrong with that!

[name_u]Ashton[/name_u] → I like [name_u]Ashton[/name_u]! It feels cool and reminds me of the mountains. I also find it solidly unisex, I went to school with one girl [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and one boy [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and never thought anything of it.

[name_f]Belladonna[/name_f] → This one is too much to me for a real child, unfortunately. It feels very heavy and dark, a great name for a fantasy character but I fear it’s a bit much for a child.

[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] → I think [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] is sweet. I love the nickname options. I do think it might raise some eyebrows as it’s not really having a comeback right now, but I see the appeal!

[name_f]Blossom[/name_f] → Not a personal favorite – [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] makes me think less of flowers or Powerpuff Girls and more blossoming as a verb like growing up/maturing which I don’t love.

[name_f]Cerelia[/name_f] → I agree this name is “wispy” but that doesn’t bother me! I don’t think it’s insubstantial – it’s similar to the more common Cecelia/Cecilia and I think it has a gentle strength to it. It reminds me of the shimmery, airy blue color of Cinderella’s dress.

[name_f]Christiana[/name_f] → [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Elegant but not over the top, and rare yet familiar.

[name_f]Christine[/name_f] → I think if you have a close friend with this name, it would be hard to use it without it being an honor name for her, unless you had another [name_f]Christine[/name_f] you were honoring (and could explain to your friend “oh, it’s after my grandma, you have the same name!”).

[name_f]Corinne[/name_f] → I think [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] is nice, though it doesn’t stand out to me. Maybe try referring to a little [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] and see if you can imagine that being your child’s name? Like “oh, I have to pick up [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] at school”.

[name_u]Courtenay[/name_u] → I do like [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], though I’m having trouble pronouncing this the way you do! Putting the glottal slop after the R is throwing me off I think. I also want to pronounce it “cor-ten-ay” with this spelling. But if you love it, I think putting it in the middle spot works.

[name_f]Eleusine[/name_f] → [name_u]Love[/name_u] the way this looks but I’m not sure how to pronounce it. (Eh-loo-seen or Eh-leh-oo-seen?). It feels more fantastical than most of your names, but I like the shimmery, golden feeling it has. I also think it’s useable despite being more uncommon.

[name_u]Eris[/name_u] → I don’t love the mythological connection of being the goddess of strife, but I agree the sound is cool! I like this better than [name_u]Aris[/name_u] because I think the pronunciation is clearer (assuming you’d be pronouncing them both ehr-iss/air-iss.

[name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] → I worry about the pronunciation of this name (I’ve always assumed it was “yoo-JEE-nee”) but I think the [name_f]British[/name_f] royal connection makes it feel more current and chic.

[name_f]Geneve[/name_f] → [name_f]Pretty[/name_f]! I had the similar [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] on my list for years.

[name_f]Genevie[/name_f] → Also pretty! I like the “ee” ending, very sweet.

[name_u]Jacey[/name_u] → I love [name_u]Jacey[/name_u] (and [name_f]Jaycie[/name_f] and [name_u]Jacie[/name_u] too!). I’m not surprised it was unpopular in the Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] Thread, lol, but I would love to see this on your list! It’s so sweet and lively and spirited in the best way. Youthful and full of energy but I can totally see it on an adult too.

[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] → I agree that [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] isn’t necessarily the most eye-catching name due to it’s popularity over the last few decades. However, it is very pretty and I agree, more unexpected for a current baby. If it doesn’t excite you, though, I wouldn’t add it to your main list for now.

[name_f]Magda[/name_f] → I don’t know why this wouldn’t work in the US? But maybe I’m missing something. I think it’s cool and usable – similar to [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] but with a more ancient, European feel. The similarity to magma also makes it feel exciting and fiery to me.

[name_f]Martina[/name_f] → It sounds from your description like this should go on your list! I agree that it’s an underrated classic.

[name_f]Noelene[/name_f] → Maybe spend a little more time with this on your “considering” list to see if the love passes or if it becomes a more long-term favorite.

[name_f]Paulina[/name_f] → I really like [name_f]Paulina[/name_f], it doesn’t feel frumpy to me! Instead it feels sweet, lively, and international.

[name_f]Rebekah[/name_f] → If it doesn’t excite you, I probably wouldn’t add it to your list. I do think it’s a lovely name, though! I personally prefer [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] but regardless of spelling it’s classic, kind, and lively.

[name_f]Ria[/name_f] → [name_f]Ria[/name_f] feels a bit incomplete to me. If it feels insubstantial to you, too, maybe [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] or [name_f]Riya[/name_f]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] as a nickname for something else?

[name_u]Sable[/name_u] → I do think of stable with this too. I think if you aren’t sure you can get over that, it should stay on the “considering” list for now.

Shaina/Shayna/Shaine → I don’t think the sound is too harsh! I’ve known a few Shaina/Shayna’s and think the name sounds cool and sharp in a good way. [name_u]Shaine[/name_u] I actually assumed was pronounced like Shaina/Shayna because a lot of times with Yiddish names the final “e” is pronounced like an “a”. But I think it makes sense as a feminization of the [name_u]Irish[/name_u] [name_u]Shane[/name_u] as well.

[name_f]Tahnee[/name_f] → I think this is pretty. Reminds me of the word tawny. Maybe keep it on your “considering” list a little longer to see if you really love it for yourself?

[name_u]Timber[/name_u] → I can’t see this as a person’s name, unfortunately. It does sound like a dog’s name, maybe the dog of a lumberjack  I like the similar [name_f]Kimber[/name_f], though.

[name_u]Viridian[/name_u] → [name_u]Viridian[/name_u] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] have totally different vibes to me. [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is vintage, a little bookish, artistic, and sweet, bringing to mind neutral colors and plaid skirts, but also a bit of an athletic, outdoorsy vibe. [name_u]Viridian[/name_u] is more sci-fi, outer space, neon colors, and bad@ss vibe.

Yma → I like this name in theory! I worry a little about people thinking it’s a spelling variant of [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and pronouncing it like that. [name_u]Or[/name_u] how people sometimes abbreviate “grandma” to Gma. But the sound is so pretty and I don’t mind the look! Maybe keep it on the “considering” list?

[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] → I think [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] is really pretty. Maybe try it out in sentences like “Zinnia turns two next week!” and see if you can really imagine it? [name_u]Or[/name_u] type out a fake birth announcement for a [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] and see how you feel about that.

[name_f]Alannah[/name_f]: I think the spelling is a bit made up looking. It looks too much like a combination of [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Alana[/name_f].
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]: This makes me think of [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables for some reason, so while it is a bit extreme, I like the old fashioned, literary feel of it, and it would have several good nicknames.

Anais/Anaise: I don’t like this at all.
[name_f]Ann[/name_f]: Personally, I find [name_f]Ann[/name_f] very bland and this spelling makes it seem like such a filler name. I think [name_f]Anna[/name_f] is pretty, though, so you could use [name_f]Ann[/name_f] as a nickname.

[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]: I don’t think it’s too connected to the little mermaid, and isn’t too popular anymore, but if you wanted it to be a little more unique, you could spell it “Arielle” or “Ariella”
[name_u]Ashton[/name_u]: I don’t like the sound, and it looks very masculine and out of date to me.
[name_f]Belladonna[/name_f]: Maybe as a long nickname for a name with [name_f]Bella[/name_f] in it; I don’t like [name_f]Donna[/name_f] at all.
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]: I could see this name coming back and becoming “hip” in a few years.
[name_f]Blossom[/name_f]: I think it could work well as a middle name.
[name_f]Cerelia[/name_f]: I think it’s pretty, and also has that old fashioned, literary sound and look.
[name_f]Christiana[/name_f]: This looks very European and could make one of the [name_u]Chris[/name_u] names more interesting and uncommon
[name_f]Christine[/name_f]: This looks very 1960s or 70s to me, and I think [name_f]Christina[/name_f] is prettier.
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]: I don’t hate it, but I don’t particularly like the sound.
[name_u]Courtenay[/name_u]: No. This reminds me of the McKenzie based names like “McKinzlee” or “McKella”

[name_f]Eleusine[/name_f]: This looks like a kind of medicine somehow…
[name_u]Eris[/name_u]: I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is much nicer and something about [name_u]Eris[/name_u] is just awkward.
[name_f]Eugenie[/name_f]: This looks too much like a mixture of euthanasia and eugenics.
[name_f]Geneve[/name_f]: Very out of date looking, I find it similar to “Janene” or “Jeanette”
[name_f]Genevie[/name_f]: The same as above
[name_u]Jacey[/name_u]: This looks like a nickname and not a very pretty one.
[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]: I don’t mind this name; it’s a bit watered down now that it’s been popular for a while, but it’s not ugly.
[name_f]Magda[/name_f]: I could imagine this being used by hipsters or people who like international names in the US.

[name_f]Martina[/name_f]: This name is very… indifferent… to me; I don’t hate it, but something’s just a little off about it.
[name_f]Noelene[/name_f]: I have the same impression about this as with “Geneve”, although it’s a bit prettier and more mild.
[name_f]Paulina[/name_f]: I think it’s pretty and unexpected.
[name_f]Rebekah[/name_f]: I personally prefer the more classic [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] spelling.
[name_f]Ria[/name_f]: I don’t care for this.

[name_u]Sable[/name_u]: This doesn’t work at all. It sounds too much like stable and I can’t imagine a little girl or baby with this name.
Shaina/Shayna/Shaine: These look kind of out of date, maybe 1970s or 80s.
[name_f]Tahnee[/name_f]: I don’t like it at all.
[name_u]Timber[/name_u]: This is awful, especially for a girl’s name.
[name_u]Viridian[/name_u]: This is very awkward looking, and sounds like it would be a hotel or a brand of soap.
Yma: I don’t like it and it looks awkward.
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]: I think this is pretty and unexpected, yet classic.

[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]
[name_f]Rebekah[/name_f]
[name_f]Alannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Christiana[/name_f]

Thank y’all for your input!! I truly appreciate it. Honestly, I had had a LOT of coffee the morning I posted this (and I don’t even drink caffeine regularly)… so I was buzzin’, and didn’t realize how long this post ended up being. :flushed: I definitely would have broken it up normally hahaha.

@greyblue as always, I appreciate your thoughtful advice.
-I’m pronouncing [name_f]Eleusine[/name_f] as el-oo-SIGN or el-oo-SIN.
-I have never thought of eugenics with [name_f]Eugenie[/name_f], but now… yikes. I still like the sound of [name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] a lot but… yeah, yikes.
-I’m glad to hear that you’ve known a [name_f]Ria[/name_f] irl!
-And I think I unfortunately am leaning towards agreeing with you on Zinnia… I want to love it a lot, but I’m just not sure it fits. Thank you for giving me more to mull over!

@EagleEyes much appreciation for your detailed and thorough feedback!
-I actually have [name_f]Anise[/name_f] on my list as well so maybe that’s why I like [name_f]Anaise[/name_f] too?
-I think you are right on [name_f]Christine[/name_f], which I find a lovely name, but circumstances would make it unusable for me.
-I will try to post an audio file of how I’m pronouncing [name_u]Courtenay[/name_u] later. Honestly it’s really hard to explain. It’s almost like “cor-(uh)-nee” with a glottal stop (or two?) in the middle. I know it’s an unusual spelling and pronunciation, but I discovered this name when I was young and that’s how I encountered it :man_shrugging:t2: I wish I could remember where I encountered it.
-I am pronouncing [name_f]Eleusine[/name_f] as “el-oo-SIGN” or “el-oo-SIN”.
-And I AM GLAD TO SEE A JACEY SUPPORTER!
-I just felt like [name_f]Magda[/name_f] maybe felt a little too unfamiliar in the US, but maybe I’m overthinking.
-I do like the suggestions of trying out the names in sentences to see if they feel right and I will definitely do that. All of the names I currently have on my list I can envision using in a similar way so I will work on that!

@Nina_Alexandra_2005 Thank you for opinions! I really appreciate the input. I think I’m starting to agree that [name_u]Sable[/name_u] is cool in theory but maybe not in practice. It seems the consensus is to nix [name_u]Timber[/name_u], which I can understand.

@DropOfsunlight Thank you for taking the time out to give opinions on this long list! I’m happy to see some love for [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] and I hope I can overcome my reservations with its popularity. And I feel like I have the same reservations with Paulina… it’s pretty heavy on the “Paul”.
