Honest opinions please!

Hello all,

First time poster (although long time lurker) so thanks for all the fun over the years - now it’s my turn and my sincere apologies for the lack of formatting.

Husband and I are thinking about baby no. 3. We have a slightly unusual arrangement in that we agree on and lock in a name well before BFP.

So far we have on the shortlist:

Leonore
Calliope
Beatrice
Helen
Tallis
Margaret
Bryony

(I love Hillary, Cosima, and Salome, but DH not keen and probably rightly so)

Lawrence / Laurence
Lowry
Miles
Percy
Barnaby

(Previously very keen on Rafferty, Rafe, Roland and Rollo - but R names out as per note!)

We would like to honour my father by using the middle name Piata for a girl or Peter for a boy (but alternatives gratefully received)

Surname is three syllables, begins with H and has a hard -n ending.

Our two daughters are Diana Mary and Rosalind Frances.

Just to make things even harder, I have a hangup with sibsets having a similar ‘feel’ but very different sounds. So any names starting with D or R or ending with -ia or -nd are out.

The floor’s open: any thoughts, positive/negative associations, or names to add or remove?

TIA - looking forward to your thoughts, I’m stuck!

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are my favorites (in that order) of your girls’ names! I adore the way they sound with big sisters’ names. Both of them sound regal, smart, classy, and full of sunshine. They give me the same mature yet down-to-earth feel I get from [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]. All of these girls names age so beautifully as well! So divine. Another favorite is [name_f]Bryony[/name_f]! I don’t think this is the exact same style as older sisters’ names are, but it’s just such a cool name, and it most certainly doesn’t clash. Feels so bright, natural, and exciting!

[name_u]Laurence[/name_u] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] are my favorites (in that order) of your boys’ names! They both feel so literary and cozy to me. Very strong, handsome, polished, and playful. I could see a little boy wearing either name and an elderly man wearing them as well! They’re just so strong. Absolutely love them, and they’re excellent with [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f].

Piata and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] are lovely as middles. I think those go well with all of the first names on your two beautiful lists! In case you haven’t eliminated these ideas already, here are a few more Peter-adjacent middles for girls that I enjoy:
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Pietra[/name_f]
[name_f]Peta[/name_f]
[name_f]Pierrette[/name_f]
[name_f]Petal[/name_f]

Best luck choosing! Your lists are truly lovely. X

First of all–WOW, your daughters’ names are lovely!

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] Piata & Laurence/Lawrence [name_m]Peter[/name_m] seems to have the closest “feel” to me, from your list. I can easily see them as siblings to [name_f]Diana[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]. I particularly have a soft spot for [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]: I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] from [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] was on our own list. Also, I could see [name_f]Helen[/name_f] working, though your description of your surname gives me pause. But I think [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] & [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] are flawless, and you need no more suggestions at all.

HOWEVER. Because suggestions are fun, and I can’t get over how amazing your taste is and how fantastic your set IS and CAN BE, I’m choosing to throw some up here anyway.

I really like: [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] with your existing daughters names
For a boy definitely vote for [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]

I prefer [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] over [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], but [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] Piata, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] Piata, and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Piata are all adorable!

[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] or [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is my favorite out of your boy names.

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes for [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] Piata or Lawrence/Laurence [name_m]Peter[/name_m], as I think either of those will go best with [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f].

I might also suggest [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] or [name_f]Lorene[/name_f] for a girl? And I like the previous suggestion of [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] for a boy. [name_f]My[/name_f] great grandpa’s name was Loranzie, so I’m partial to it I suppose :relaxed:

With your girls, I love [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], Lawrence,Percy and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]. They seem to fit your criteria best!!

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are my personal faves

I’ll throw in the suggestions of:

[name_m]Fergus[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_u]Clarence[/name_u]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_u]Camille[/name_u]

Honestly your tradition makes you guys very very organised/efficient parents! I hummed and ahhhed throughout my whole pregnancy. Clearly this tradition works for you guys your daughters are wonderfully named.

From your girls names I love [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I think stylistically [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f] & [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are the best fit. With my favourite being [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] for your sibling set just because she has a similar sweet feel.

Suggestions
[name_f]Imogene[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_u]Simone[/name_u]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u]

From your boys I absolutely love [name_u]Miles[/name_u] & [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] especially [name_u]Miles[/name_u] honestly such a handsome name that feels distinguished. I would be tempted to go [name_u]Miles[/name_u] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] that would be really adorable.

Suggestions
[name_m]Charlton[/name_m]
[name_m]Jeremy[/name_m]
[name_m]Olivier[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Harris[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

I love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] a lot!!!

I think [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Bryony[/name_f] & [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] or [name_u]Miles[/name_u] would be lovely with your daughter’s names. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Petra[/name_f] as a middle too. I also think [name_u]Perrin[/name_u] or [name_f]Perrine[/name_f] would be quite nice to honour [name_m]Peter[/name_m].

Your girls have such gorgeous names! Of your short lists, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] stand out (I have SUCH a soft spot for Calliope). I would strike [name_m]Tallis[/name_m] just because I keep misreading it as ‘tallit’ aka a Jewish prayer shawl with tied fringes on the edges, but also because you seem to gravitate towards names with long histories. I would lean [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] over [name_u]Lowry[/name_u] for the same reason, although my favorite on your boys’ list is [name_u]Percy[/name_u] or [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m].

I would add:
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] or [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m]
[name_m]Warren[/name_m]
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Piata, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f], [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Pierre[/name_m]

I like [name_u]Lowry[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]!

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Piata
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u] Piata
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u] Piata

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] are really lovely. They totally have a similar vibe.

Here are my thoughts on your lists:

Girls-

Leonore-I don’t know. I like that it’s different & feminine w/out being frilly. Which is good w/your daughters’ names. I just think that it sounds a little too dark & kind of awkward to say. Because it’s almost like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but it’s not. I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but it’s very popular which you may not like. I also love [name_f]Leora[/name_f], but that ends in an ‘a’

Calliope-This is so fun. I love the fairy like spunk of it. It seems a bit of a different style from [name_f]Diana[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (even though it’s Greek like Diana), but it doesn’t not fit.

Beatrice-This is a great name. It’s smart & sweet & thoughtful & vintage. It’s easy & well known, but not too popular. A great fit w/your crew.

Helen-I don’t mind [name_f]Helen[/name_f]. It’s old fashioned & simple & not popular. And I love the nn [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]! But I just never could get into it because of the ‘Hel’ sound.

Tallis-Not a fan of this one. It doesn’t sound very pretty to me, but it’s not horrible. I really love [name_f]Talia[/name_f] for you, but it ends in an ‘a’.

Margaret-A nice classic. A name that I like in theory more than the actual sound, but it’s still a good choice. Especially w/all of the cute nns. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] & [name_f]Gerty[/name_f], but I also like [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] & [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].

Bryony-I want to like this. It’s floral & it’s unique & a really cool fit w/Diana & [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]. I just don’t like the sound, because it reminds me of Bryan-ee.

(I love [name_u]Hillary[/name_u], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], and [name_f]Salome[/name_f], but DH not keen and probably rightly so)-Salome  :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Too bad your dh doesn’t like it.

A few ideas that you may like-

[name_f]Anais[/name_f]

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]

[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]

[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

[name_f]Esther[/name_f]

[name_f]Frances[/name_f]

[name_u]Marian[/name_u]

[name_f]Marisol[/name_f]

Marigold…it ends in a ‘d’, but not an ‘nd’.

[name_f]Margot[/name_f]

[name_f]Olive[/name_f]

[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]

[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]

Boys-

[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] / Laurence-I very strongly prefer [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]. Not sure why. I think it’s fine. It doesn’t excite me, but it’s not a bad name.

Lowry-It’s not bad; kind of hard to say. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] (probably this spelling, actually) nn [name_u]Lowry[/name_u] might be fun.

Miles-It’s not bad, but by gosh, I meet so many little Miles’. It feels really over done to me. I prefer [name_u]Milo[/name_u] too.

Percy-Cute, but just a bit too cute. I think I like it for a cat. :smiley_cat:

Barnaby-So charming & adorable. I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it myself, but it’s a great name. Fun & posh & well known but not done. Nice w/your girls’ names too.

A few boy ideas-

[name_m]Albert[/name_m]

[name_u]Bennett[/name_u]

[name_m]Bernard[/name_m]

[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]

[name_m]Jerome[/name_m]

[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]

[name_m]Niles[/name_m]

[name_m]Philip[/name_m]

[name_m]Peter[/name_m]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m]

[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I like all the girl names you have listed. [name_f]Bryony[/name_f] and [name_f]Helen[/name_f] are particular favorites.

I love [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], [name_u]Percy[/name_u], and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m].

I prefer [name_f]Petra[/name_f] or [name_f]Petrova[/name_f] to Pieta, but Pieta is fine.

I love the sound of [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], and [name_f]Helen[/name_f]. All of a a piece.

I also love the sound of [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], and any of the three boy names I listed.

Great choices!
