Honest Opinions

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,
Recently I came across a post from @leafsgirl44 titled “Give Me the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” where she listed off her favourite names and asked for everyone’s opinions. Although I’m not expecting or planning on anytime soon, I love collecting names and since reading her post, I’ve been so intrigued to make my own.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my favourite names! Note, some of these I prefer more for middles but still adore them, if that changes anyones opinions!

Alaia, [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f],[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f], [name_f]Alanis[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Fallon[/name_u], and [name_f]Evolette[/name_f] are nice, but not my faves.

I like [name_f]Augustina[/name_f] and [name_u]Nova[/name_u] better than [name_u]Augustine[/name_u] and [name_f]Novalie[/name_f].

Sofia, [name_f]Alaina[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are just okay for me. I think I hear them way too often, so I’m tired of them. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] fits in this same category, but I have a much bigger aversion to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. I have heard too many kids and adults with the name bullied and called harlot. Plus, it just isn’t a pleasant sound to me.

If I had to choose a least favourite I’d pick [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] or [name_u]Fallon[/name_u], they are both lovely names, they just don’t fit the ‘vibe’ of the other imo

This is a lovely list! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Evolette[/name_f]. :sparkling_heart:

My least favourites are probably [name_u]Augustine[/name_u], [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. I have associations from my own life that contribute to why I don’t like [name_u]Augustine[/name_u], but aside from that I just can’t see it as a girls name personally, it’s all boy to me. [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] just doesn’t have an appealing sound imo and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is a bit overdone.

LOVE & would use:
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]

Love for others, not for me:
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] (this spelling only)
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]

Meh, not really for me:
[name_f]Novalie[/name_f] - a little too trendy for me
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] & [name_u]Willow[/name_u] - could never quite warm up to either name despite having been on NB for years
[name_f]Evolette[/name_f] - the sound is pretty but for some reason I don’t love how it looks written out
[name_u]Fallon[/name_u] - as far as unisex (sounding) names go it’s fine but they’re just not my style
[name_u]Augustine[/name_u] - I much prefer [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] as I’m not such a big fan of -een ending for girls for some reason
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f] - a little too instagram “boho” filter essential-oil mom for me, but that’s just my association
[name_f]Faye[/name_f] - just not for me
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - I just don’t love the look of names ending in -ah
[name_f]Alanis[/name_f] - it’s so tied to the singer for me that I can’t really see it on anyone else
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f] - could be quite cool as a middle name but it feels quite dated
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - cool name, it’s just not for me
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] - I like this in Spanish/Basque but feel it looses something when pronounced in [name_f]English[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaina[/name_f] - also just not for me, I prefer the [name_f]Elena[/name_f] spelling (even though I tend to prefer the (H)elena pronunciation for that one)

Overall I think you have a lovely list as we have a very similar style :relaxed:
The names I don’t love are still great names, they’re just not for me.

I love many names on your list! I usually like names that are classic or vintage, and not too uncommon, but it is really personal.

Names I love:
Sofia
Estelle
Florence
Charlotte
Alice
Elise
Esme
*Many of those are my favorites too!

Names I like:
Josephine
Adelaide
Valerie
Delilah
Rosalie
Maeve
Lily
Iris
Violet
Willow
Hazel
A lot of great options there too!

Names I’m not attracted to (and why):
Sybil (too uncommon)
Alaina (I prefer Elaine or Elena)
Alaia (I prefer Alia)
Tessa (always felt like a harsh name because of the T- sound at the beginning)
Audrey (too many in my generation)
Rhiannon (the sound)
Alanis (I prefer Alice)
Faye (the sound)
Meadow (too uncommon)
Evolette (too uncommon)
Fallon (too uncommon)
Novalie (too uncommon)
Augustine (feels old, but I love Alice, Charlotte, & Estelle lol)
The fact that they don’t appeal to me doesn’t mean that they’re not great names too

Sofia- love it, especially this spelling. Oddly I dont like [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] got really popular and I know a couple little Sofias so unfortunately the name is off limits to me but I think its sweet!

Josephine- has really grown on me. I used to not like it but now I actually really do.

Sybil - its ok, reminds me of the show [name_f]Cybill[/name_f] in the 90s which isn’t bad but very specific.

Alaina - I prefer just [name_f]Lana[/name_f] or [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] - not a huge fan of [name_f]Alaina[/name_f] but my husband is an [name_m]Alan[/name_m] so maybe it just feels too similar to his name. [name_f]My[/name_f] name sounds like my mom’s which always annoyed me so I strive for names that have different sounds in a household.

Adelaide- I want to love [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] but its not really for me. I can appreciate it and would love to meet a little [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] but its not for my list personally.

Estelle- love it

Alaia- so so pretty but I would worry about potential teasing

Florence- used to not like it but its grown on me a lot

Tessa - not a fan. We had a dog named [name_f]Tess[/name_f] so thats probably why

Valerie- I think its really pretty but I know several adults Valeries so find it a bit dated

Audrey- love [name_f]Audrey[/name_f]. Its my cousins name so I can’t use it unfortunately but I love it

Rhiannon- love it. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the song also

Alanis - I love [name_f]Alanis[/name_f] Morissette so I’m all about it although again - too close to my husband’s name for me personally

Charlotte- not a fan. It always seemed like a stuffy name if that makes sense and its gotten really popular

Delilah is sweet!

Rosalie- I prefer [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] but [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] has charm

Maeve - another one that has grown on me. I prefer [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] because its more interesting but [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] has charm, its just popular as a middle name. I would prefer to see it used as a first name.

Faye - love love love

Meadow - I want to love [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], its spunky and care free but reminds me of The Sopranos too much, not thst that’s a bad thing but again very specific association

Alice - kinda bores me

Lily - not my favorite flower name, kinda bores me

Iris - I do really like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] in the right combination

Violet- love love love

Willow- never could get into [name_u]Willow[/name_u]

Hazel - its part of my last name so find it odd

Evolette- I do love [name_f]Evolette[/name_f]. I know its a combo name and some will argue its made up but I really like it. Its so pretty!

Elise - love it

Fallon - its pretty… I knew a [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] and she wore it well. It was unique then and I did find it intriguing.

Esme - Im a little over [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and prefer [name_f]Estee[/name_f]. But its pretty in the right combination.

Novalie - I do really like this. I think I prefer just [name_u]Nova[/name_u] more but [name_f]Novalie[/name_f] has a nice ring to it.

Augustine - love love love

I’m not going to go over your entire list as many are simply not my style. But I wanted to comment on two names I feel are stand outs to me (in the absolute best way possible) from your list.

Augustine & [name_f]Alanis[/name_f]

They may be different in style, but I think what draws these two names out for me are similar reasons. They are both underrated, rarely seem mentioned names. Yet they both feel very accessible, and share many traits with some well loved names. I’d love to see either of these names in real life!

[name_f]Sofia[/name_f]: extremely common but extremely beautiful so it’s no wonder, I would avoid if you have a very common last name
Josephine: really enjoy this one, lots of great nickname options
Sybil: not really into it but nothing wrong with it, might run into some spelling troubles but nothing crazy
Alaina: I prefer [name_f]Alana[/name_f] personally but this is nice, I like the nn [name_u]Laine[/name_u] or [name_f]Lainey[/name_f]
Adelaide: this has never done it for me personally, makes me think of lemonade and marmalade
Estelle: I prefer [name_f]Stella[/name_f] but can see the appeal here, underused but familiar enough
Alaia: the first few times I’ve seen this name I thought it was really nice but I just heard it in my head right now and it sounds like I’m calling someone “a liar” with an accent
Florence: this is another one that’s never really struck my fancy but I think it would be a nice sister to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
Tessa: knew a not so nice one growing up but now have a little cousin [name_f]Tess[/name_f], feels wearable and easy to read, say, and spell
Valerie: I could see how this one fits into your style, however it feels kind of middle aged to me even though I know one younger than me
Audrey: this is another name I think is easy to comprehend but still not common, a solid choice
Rhiannon: reminds me of [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] which makes me smile
Alanis: sticking with the music theme I’m reminded of Morrisette with this one, kind of verges on a one-person name like [name_f]Oprah[/name_f] or [name_f]Rihanna[/name_f] to me
Charlotte: see [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
Delilah: I prefer [name_f]Delia[/name_f] but nothing wrong with [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] as far as I know
Rosalie: reminds me of [name_u]Twilight[/name_u] but a nice name
Maeve: the meaning is fantastic, short but substantial
Faye: doesn’t do it for me, I think this one should be left to mythology
Meadow: not sure why I gave trouble with this name in general but with [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] above and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] below it’s reading twilight to me as well
Alice: has never done it for me, I keep seeing “a lice”
Lily: this is nice, maybe slightly common but not bad
Iris: I’d like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as sisters
Violet: I really enjoy this one but a lot of people comment on it sounding like “violent” whenever it’s in my user card/signature
Willow: much preferred to [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] I think, really good vibe from this name, [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is also super nice
Hazel: I don’t know why but this name feels perpetually toddler-esque to me
Evolette: feels like Evil’s female counterpart, just not appealing to me, [name_f]Evolet[/name_f] may be a little better
Elise: I haven’t heard this one in a while but I like it a lot, might be seen as slightly dated
Fallon: this is a great name that I could see on anyone
Esme: not big on these letters together I don’t think and again, with [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]/Alice/Meadow it’s Very twilight, however the meaning is delightful
Novalie: this doesn’t feel as nice as your other options, very new compared to your more established names above, also gives the same adjective vibe I get from [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
Augustine: this one feels kind of out of left field to me but at the same time would fit well with a sister [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], I do think it’s less established as a female name so that might present some issues but I would not think a huge deal

Overall, first impression: I really like a lot of these names! Great first draft!

Specifically:
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] - Quite popular, a little frilly/fussy.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - Nice nod to [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - Pretty! [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a possible nn?
[name_f]Alaina[/name_f] - Easy to pronounce when read, but more difficult to spell right the first time hearing it.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I always thought it seemed a little old fashioned, but it’s gaining a lot of popularity. Growing on me.
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] - I think it’s very chic and sophisticated.
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] - Not super obvious pronunciation or spelling, but still lovely.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - Never liked the sound of it, but I like the association with [name_f]Italy[/name_f].
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] - Modern and stylish.
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f] - Has a more retro feel to me. Quite cute.
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] - Hepburn. Everybody likes [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Hepburn.
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - Not super familiar with this name. It seems modern and cool.
[name_f]Alanis[/name_f] - Morissette? Another cool name. I couldn’t pull it off, but props to those who could.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - Very popular. [name_u]Royal[/name_u] name. Literary name. Means “free man”.
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - Hey there, [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]. Could be really hard for a toddler to learn to say.
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] - I love it. Classic, timeless, feminine, and a straightforward spelling/pronunciation.
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - I really like it. Kind of exotic/fascinating. People might need help with pronunciation.
[name_f]Faye[/name_f] - So cute. Reminds me of the wife/mom in the movie What About [name_m]Bob[/name_m]?
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] the sound, but word names are bigger targets for teasing in school.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - Classic. Versatile.
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - Cute and sweet. [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - I think it’s sophisticated. One of the least fussy floral names.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - Popular, but it has undeniable charm.
[name_u]Willow[/name_u] - [name_m]Can[/name_m]’t really decide how I feel about this name, but it definitely has a soft, gentle vibe.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - Vintage and nice, definitely gaining popularity.
[name_f]Evolette[/name_f] - Never heard before, but intrigued. Too close to Evil-ette?
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] and timeless.
[name_u]Fallon[/name_u] - [name_u]Unique[/name_u] but not unusual. Cool, stylish, sophisticated, no fuss kind of name.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - Still associated with the [name_u]Twilight[/name_u] books/movies, at least for me.
[name_f]Novalie[/name_f] - Oooo! Never heard this one, either. I like!
[name_u]Augustine[/name_u] - Maybe a little too old fashioned for me. Not in love with the sound of it.

Sofia - fine but overdone. I personally love just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f].
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - I too and fro on this name, in theory I really like it (especially [name_u]Josie[/name_u] or [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as nicknames!) but I never love it, you know? It’s a perfectly lovely name, but it just doesn’t sing to me.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - another where I really appreciate it, but I don’t love it. Mostly it just makes me think of [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u].
[name_f]Alaina[/name_f] - It’s just never been a name I like, sorry. As with some of your others it’s a completely decent name, and definitely not overused despite having a lot of objective appeal, it just doesn’t do it for me.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I adore this name! I’m secretly holding out for a family member to use it (SO doesn’t like it) but I would love one in my life so I get to say it more often!
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] - really nice, I think I prefer Estara, but [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] is lovely and sleek.
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] - I love it, I have a weakness for ‘aia’ names, I do worry a little about ‘a liar’ but I still think it at least looks lovely.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - lovely, down to earth but feminine, lots of cool nickname options.
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] - it’s fine, I have no complaints but I don’t really love it. Everyone [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]/Tess I’ve known has been a bit much to deal with, which doesn’t help.
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f] - I really like [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], I don’t think about it often but I think it’s really nice.
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] - it’s nice, feels a little overdone around me, but I still think it’s lovely.
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - it’s fine. It’s just not got a collection of sounds I find that appealing. I love [name_f]Ria[/name_f] or [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], but I’ve never liked [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] as a name. I’ve known three, they’ve all been nice.
[name_f]Alanis[/name_f] - sorry, I just don’t like it. It sounds too much like a hodge-podge of sounds from nicer names all thrown together.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - I may be in the minority here, but I think [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is exceptionally dull. A bit rich coming from me, given my name choices are also ‘classic’ and often fairly common. But I think I’ve just known SO many of a range of ages - there were 6 Charlottes on my degree course of 30, beaten only by Emmas (there were 9!) - and honestly very few have been people I liked. It’s just, so blah to me. Sorry, objectively it’s fine, but I just find it uninspiring.
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - lovely, I like the strong ‘eye’ sound and I think it has such a bouncy, musical quality to it.
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] - I used to like it but then it seemed to explode across naming sites and now I think it’s fine, I prefer just [name_f]Rose[/name_f] I think. It does make me think a little of [name_u]Twilight[/name_u], but I don’t hold that completely against it.
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - It’s fine, I vastly prefer just [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is another one where I’ve known a few and they’ve all be meh(ve - ha. [name_m]Aren[/name_m]’t I funny /s) It’s fine. But it’s a bit of a grey name, a bit bland to me.
[name_f]Faye[/name_f] - it’s fine, I prefer [name_f]Faith[/name_f]. I’ve seen [name_u]Flair[/name_u] and [name_f]Fayre[/name_f] recently which I think are much cooler, although admittedly potentially much less wearable.
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]! I think it’s got a nice vibe to it.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - very biased as it is mine and my partner’s absolute top choice for a future girl, but I think it’s lovely. I wish it had slightly more nickname options, but overall I think it’s a solid name. Feminine without being superfluously frilly.
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - it’s lovely, it’s horrendously popular, but it’s one of those ones where I can see why. It’s so pretty. I think it might be a little too popular for me, but I wish it wasn’t because then I’d totally use it (if my surname didn’t end in ‘lee’)
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - it’s having a come back and I really support that. A more spunky [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - it’s fine, I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. I think it has a collection of sounds I feel like I should like, but for some reason it doesn’t quite hit the spot.
[name_u]Willow[/name_u] - lovely, I wish it had more nickname options I liked, but I do still really like it.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - it’s fine, I know one (an adult) who is awful which puts me off. I prefer names with solid nickname options and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] just doesn’t.
[name_f]Evolette[/name_f] - I really, really want to love it. It’s got so much cool going on and I’m a sucker for a lesser known ‘Ev’ name. But something just doesn’t work for me. Evanette or Ettienette both do more for me.
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] - sorry, another that I just don’t gel with. Same for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. It just falls a little flat for me.
[name_u]Fallon[/name_u] - it’s fine, no real complaints. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - really nice, having a big spike in popularity though. Also the name of my fairly… eccentric… aunt. Nothing you need to worry about, but it certainly colours the name for me! I’m looking forward to meeting babies with the name so that I can make some more associations!
[name_f]Novalie[/name_f] - it’s alright, personally I vastly prefer just [name_u]Nova[/name_u], which feels sleek and feminine. [name_f]Novalie[/name_f] seems like it’s trying a bit too hard.
[name_u]Augustine[/name_u] - I strongly associate it as a male name, but I think it’s cool and I can totally see it on a girl.
