It’s totally different from my husband and I’s taste but we just really like it. I’ve been doing some research and in 2014 only 1 girl was called [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and another with the spelling [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f].
What are your thoughts on it? [name_f]Honesty[/name_f] is always appreciated.
The problem for me is that we want to use my maiden for a middle name which is [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] which is obviously very masculine and I’m wondering if it’s too much masculinity for a little girl to pull off,
I like [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]. I think of the noir detective [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], and also [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] [name_m]Miller[/name_m]'s daughter [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f].
I do think using [name_m]Clark[/name_m] in the middle makes it too masculine. I would pick something more feminine in the middle like [name_m]Miller[/name_m] did.
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] is in mine and my husband’s top two names for a girl, so we obviously love it. Our almost 2 year old’s name is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], so we were going to flip flop and do a girly first name and use [name_u]James[/name_u] as her middle name. I love [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m]. You have my vote. Xx
I absolutely adore [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]. It is honestly one of my favorite names and my biggest crush right now, but my FI hates it and I don’t love how it sounds with my future last name. I keep thinking that I might just use this name at the very last minute because I adore it so much.
It sounds harsh to my ears, because of the strong [name_f]Mar[/name_f] beginning. Once I get past that I get stuck on the ‘low’ ending. But that’s just me, I can see how others might like it, it’s just not a sound that I find pleasing.
I adore [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m]. I dont think it sounds too masculine and love it as it is but…if you were worried you could use a second middle name. I would use something feminine
I generally don’t go for unisex names, but [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] is one of the exceptions - something about it feels very strong-but-soft, and it still feels fresh to me. I like it loads better than [name_f]Marlee[/name_f]/[name_u]Marley[/name_u], too.
I think whether [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] feels too masculine depends on how often [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] is used on boys in your area - I don’t bat an eye when I see a surname used in the middle name spot for either gender, so if I was trying to determine the gender from seeing a name on a list, it would all depend on [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] for me. You could toss a clearly feminine middle name in there if you were worried about it, as someone previously suggested.
For my taste [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] is too masculine for a girl. It’s a wonderful name, but I would not personally use that combination for a girl. Maybe if [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] was the third name and the second name was something clearly feminine. Other than that, [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] is a lovely name! I really like it. For me it works for both genders, but it can easily become more masculine depending on the middle name.
also do you know how many boys were named [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] in 2014 cause it’s one of my top boys names and would love to know how many there were. Thanks.
Well, I do like the name [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]. It has a film noir vibe for me, and that’s positive. [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] might be a bit much, since they’re both surnames. I like someone’s earlier suggestion about adding a female-specific second middle name. Or you might have to decide which name is more important to you, and swap one of them out. [name_f]Marlo[/name_f] [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] might also be an option. [name_f]Marlo[/name_f] looks less surnamey.
[name_u]Marlow[/name_u] is okay (I prefer this spelling), but I don’t like the obvious nn “[name_u]Marley[/name_u]”
I like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] much better (nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] or Lo), then [name_f]Harlow[/name_f]…I like [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] the least of those three similar names.
