Maybe sounds a little silly, but I’ve been thinking a lot lately about ways to incorporate a name honoring my first dog into my future child’s name without it being super on the nose. [name_f]My[/name_f] dog is named [name_u]Cairo[/name_u], after the city in [name_u]Egypt[/name_u] for no particularly deep reason besides the fact that she’s a golden colored pit bull and it was really the only name that stuck in the months we were fostering her years ago (we went through SO many names with her). When she is in trouble she gets the full name treatment, and knows if we call, “Cairo Egypt!!” She is in big trouble
It would mean a lot to me to have a name honoring her after she’s gone as she (with no exaggeration) saved my life, but no matter how creative I try to get I haven’t been able to come up with any I really like besides Qahir for a boy and Qahira (nn Qaia/Caia?) for a girl, respectively (from the city Cairo’s arabic name al-Qāhirah). I was hoping someone else may be able to come up with some more creative ideas! Thank you in advance!
How about something that can be shortened to Kai or Ro?
River (for the Nile)?
I found this on Wikipedia which I feel has a lot of potential…
Its official name al-Qāhirah means ‘the Vanquisher’ or ‘the Conqueror’, supposedly due to the fact that the planet Mars, an-Najm al-Qāhir (النجم القاهر, ‘the Conquering Star’), was rising at the time when the city was founded
So maybe Mars, anything meaning star like Esther, Cosmo, Stella, or something to do with vanquishing like Victor, Matilda (if you search the meaning ‘victory’ on the nameberry advanced search there are loads of options)
The ancient city on the site of Cairo was Heliopolis meaning ‘sun city’ so anything with a sun meaning could work too!
Thank you!! Unfortunately anything that begins with or can be shortened to [name_f]Ro[/name_f]- is off a no-go because of the similarity to my nephew’s name, but I really enjoy [name_u]Mars[/name_u]! It’s a little on the short side, so maybe as a nickname for something else? I quite like [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] for a girl, but not sure as far as boys go Likewise I really enjoy [name_f]Stella[/name_f], but more as a nickname possibility (I do have it in my shortlist as a nickname possibility for Sterling). [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] is also super cute! I’m just not sure if I’m brave enough to use it with the cartoon association
Thanks! I feel like Cai/Kai alone might be too on the nose for me since that’s what we often call our dog, but [name_f]Helia[/name_f] and [name_m]Elio[/name_m] are both lovely!
I like the idea of using gold in the meaning, but my name is actually [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] and I worry with it being closer to my name than her’s just because I’ve personally never been huge on the idea of naming my child after either of their parents.
I adore [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] though!! That’s definitely going on the shortlist. It shares some similarities with my grandfather’s name and I really like the idea of a two-in-one honor name. [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] is also swoon worthy! I really enjoy it with the nickname Cleo/Clio in particular, or even [name_f]Caia[/name_f] as an alternative. The same goes for [name_u]Caro[/name_u], I really enjoy the sound of it as a nickname. (although it does remind me a bit of [name_u]Caro[/name_u] syrup). I’ve had [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] on my list for awhile now, and I think [name_u]Caro[/name_u] would be such a sweet nickname for her.
I don’t think I can contribute more than others already have here name-wise, but I did want to just say that I don’t think this sounds silly as an idea whatsoever. Near the end of my first dog Archie’s life, I was thinking about names and how I might incorporate his into my potential future kids’ names, but I didn’t have to try hard, because by full coincidence, my husband’s surname is [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]. I have since lost another beloved pet and the thought has crossed my mind with regard to her name, too. Pets can be so important to us that none of this sounds silly to me!
I also want to say that I don’t think honouring Cairo is silly at all! Especially since you are looking for an honour, rather than using the same name.
Ill do my best to find aome suggestions that havent been given already (the berries have already done their job lol.)
Thank you so much! She really means the world to me, and the idea that she may not live long enough for my child to have a memory of her is truly devastating to me. What a wonderful turn of fate that your husband’s surname tied into Archie’s perfectly! It’s such a lovely way to always have part of his memory with you.
Thank you so much! [name_f]Ophira[/name_f] is beautiful, I adore it! Ironically it even sounds a bit like the name of our other dogs (Pyrrha), how funny! [name_u]Cato[/name_u] is another name I would love to use, but have a family member with a very similar name. I adore him all the same though!
I never even thought of tying [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] in to [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f], how cute! I tried suggesting [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] to my partner but was shot down almost immediately for it being ‘too much/having too strong of an association’ but I think she’s lovely, regardless. I also have a absolutely massive soft spot for Cleophée with either [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] or [name_f]Fay[/name_f] as a nickname, but worry about the inevitable mispronunciations of it.
