Honor names for Martha Jane

[name_m]Just[/name_m] trying to brainstorm names ideas (doesn’t even have to be full names) that would be a nod to a miss [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. She was my husband’s grandmother and we’ve been throwing around [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a middle name.

I could have jumped through the phone to argue with my husband last night after learning he had told his grandfather, whom he is visiting, that we are definitely using [name_f]Jane[/name_f] for a middle name if we have a girl (just found out we are expecting #2). His grandfather CRIED. I want to cry. We had not landed on what would for sure be theoretical baby girl’s name, but now I feel bound to at least TRY to incorporate her somehow. Which makes me mad and feel a little petty in not wanting too. But I need to not act that way. Help a girl out :weary:

Firstborn is [name_m]Archer[/name_m] “Archie”.

That’s frustrating. Sorry that happened. I do think [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a middle name would be great if you think you’ll be happy with it. It flows nicely with most first names. If you don’t think you’ll be happy with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a middle and feel compelled to honor your husband’s grandmother, you could use her initials, MJ.

[name_f]Mila[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] “Millie”
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] “Maggie”
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f] “Tillie”
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Mae”

[name_f]Marlaina[/name_f] is cool and would incorporate sounds from both names

congratulations! i love archer ‘archie’ so much! it must be really frustrating for you, but martha and jane are both lovely names, and jane goes with most names so hopefully you can make something work!

some that could work to honour martha jane pretty directly:

mara jane
mia jane
marla jane
myra jane
marnie jane
milla jane
maya jane
moyra jane
matilda jane
molly jane
millie jane
mariana jane
maeva jane
maisie jane

or any ‘mj’ name!

some more that could work as archer’s sister:

tilda jane
violet jane
heidi jane
charlotte jane ‘Lottie/Charlie’
isabelle jane ‘Izzy/Belle’
ava jane
willow jane
poppy jane
ivy jane
olive jane

martha as a middle could work?

lucy martha
indie martha
winnie martha
penelope martha ‘penny/nell’
daisy martha
josie martha

sorry i feel like i didn’t quite nail this one! good luck!

No, this is helpful! I do like some of the names with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a middle name. I think I just felt cornered and don’t like feeling like it’s been decided for me :joy: great suggestions!! Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

I hadn’t thought of using MJ initials to honor her. Thank you for that suggestion!

That is very creative! Thank you for the suggestion!

I immediately thought of Marjolaine as an hour for Martha Jane. It’s a bit niche, but worth running it by you, I thought! As a French name, the j makes the zhh sound, in Dutch Marjolein the j is said like an English Y. As far as I’m aware - please correct me if anyone knows better - there’d be no cultural insensitivity with this name if you were to pronounce Marjolein in an anglicised way, like Mar-Jo-Lane. All irrelevant if you don’t like the name of course!

You might be able to turn Jane into Julianne or Julianna if they go better with the first name you choose.

Last suggestion is Marianne, with Mar from Martha and ‘an’ from Jane.

I adore the name [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and I think it would be beautiful as a middle, or even a first! It’s definitely tricky that your husband already told his grandfather that you were going with it for the middle. I get that you’re upset–it’s not petty to be upset that your husband commandeered the naming process and got another person involved without asking you. If you don’t love any suggestions in this thread, I think you should talk to your husband and get serious about the fact that you don’t want to use an honor name here. However, here are my suggestions for potential honors!

[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Mattie[/name_f]
[name_f]Janie[/name_f] or [name_f]Janey[/name_f] (as a first name this would be so cute!! [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and Janie–I would actually start crying, that’s soooo cute!)
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (okay, maybe a stretch–Martha like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] for Margaret…)
[name_f]June[/name_f]

You could also try to honor your husband’s grandmother a different way if you don’t love any of these suggestions–did she have a favorite flower? [name_m]Favorite[/name_m] gemstone? a value she really embodied (like charity or hope)?

Good luck talking to your husband–I’m sure you two will be able to figure out the perfect name for #2!

At least [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is great and goes with everything! And you’d make an old man and husband happy. I’d use that to take complete control of the first name.

That’s really manipulative honestly and I would have a conversation with him about it.

If she’s already being honored with the middle, though, you don’t have to honor her with the first too IMO.

I probably should have explained it better. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband would never knowingly do that as a form of manipulation. I think it was an honest mistake where he made an assumption based off of a few names we liked and was just so excited to tell his grandfather when he was telling him about the pregnancy. I wasn’t there to head it off unfortunately. But I feel like in doing so he has put us in a position that I’d rather not have been in. I definitely don’t plan on feeling obligated to honor her with all aspects of the name! If we can do it in a way that I like, then I’m all for it.

It might not be for you but Jane is one that works well as a second middle - so you could choose two you want, and still use Jane?

Still, some ideas for Martha Jane (could be middles/firsts + some combos)…

Maisy
Maeve
Juniper
Julianne
Marianne
Tamara / Tamar (using the letters of Martha)
Maisy June
Mira Juliet
Matilda (Jean)

Oh, that sounds very frustrating, I’m sorry! How do you feel about a more indirect honor? I think something with a [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- beginning might be nice:

[name_f]Maria[/name_f]
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Marta[/name_f]
[name_f]Martina[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlena[/name_f]

[name_m]Or[/name_m] a variant of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (which is part of the [name_m]John[/name_m] family) like:

[name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
Jean/Joan
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Janina[/name_f]
Janetta/Janette
[name_f]Gianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivana[/name_f]
[name_f]Hanne[/name_f]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Sinead[/name_f]
[name_f]Zhanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Siana[/name_f]

[name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe something that rhymes with [name_f]Jane[/name_f], like Lane/Laine, [name_f]Rayne[/name_f], etc.?

[name_m]Or[/name_m] are you considering something with the first letter M? I think something like [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] to honor a [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is sweet.

[name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe some part of her personality or her interests that would be an option? I like [name_f]Violet[/name_f], for example, to honor my grandmothers, since one loved the color purple and the other was born in [name_f]February[/name_f] and violets were her birth flower. Something like that, maybe?

Good luck!

I just wanted to pipe in that I would be so mad if my husband ever did that…and yet I found myself promising my grandma to name my future son after my grandfather after he died. I did not think about it, it just came out!! I was so mad at myself!!! I wanted all the names to chose from forever. These things happen, and it becomes part of the naming story. I looked at it like, I have to pick something, and I believe in fate just enough to be OK with it.

I have a [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and I love the name [name_f]Jane[/name_f] I think [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would make an amazing double middle, too. I love a connection to family history in names if you have wonderful ancestors to honor! Here are a few things from my list:

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Wilhelmina—or [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] Jane!) I love [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a nickname or as a full name in itself. I’ve seen the phonetic spelling [name_f]Willamina[/name_f] in the birth announcements here too.

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Delia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
