[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! No babies yet but planning ahead. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has expressed interest in honoring his grandmother, Margie (yes that was her full name). I’d love some ideas of honor names. [name_f]My[/name_f] heritage is Greek so something that translates well would be awesome. Ideas I’ve had:
Magdalena (I love, but husband doesn’t think it’s close enough to Margie)
Marcella (I go back and for on this one, idk if I love the Marcel sound, but I love how it sounds in Greek and the Raggedy Ann association)
Marina (eh)
Marceline (I like but maybe too out there from actual use)
Margo (eh)
Marta (I like, but I’m sure my husband will veto due to the association with the public transit system lol)
Not a fan of Margaret, Marjorie, Maria, or Pearl.
Are any of these standouts? I’d love your opinions. Other names I love are: Zoe (my yiayia’s name), Ariadne, Calliope, Evangeline, Jordana, Georgiana (a variant of my maiden name), and Selene. TSM!
Of your list, I like [name_f]Marcella[/name_f] & [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]! I do think [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] could work well, since [name_f]Margie[/name_f] has that “gee” sound. A few more ideas (though I’m not sure how well they’ll translate to Greek)…
[name_f]Magda[/name_f]
[name_f]Madge[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_m]Jory[/name_m]
[name_f]Maryam[/name_f]
[name_m]Marceli[/name_m]
[name_f]Gianna[/name_f] / [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Marjoram[/name_f]
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] / [name_f]Marielle[/name_f] / [name_f]Mariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
Thank you! I hadn’t thought of [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] working. I like [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] but I think pronunciation in the USA would be hard.

How about [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] (my favorite [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] variation)?
I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], I think it’s the “grr” sound. Sorry!

I’m Greek and I know a [name_f]Margie[/name_f] – her full name is [name_f]Margarita[/name_f]! You could also do [name_f]Margalo[/name_f] – It has kind of a “hillbilly” vibe in Greek, but I think it sounds cool in an English-speaking context.
Some other Greek [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- names: [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], Marianthe / Marianthi, [name_f]Maristella[/name_f], Marinina, [name_f]Marilou[/name_f], [name_f]Marialena[/name_f], [name_f]Marilena[/name_f], Marilia / Marillia, [name_f]Martina[/name_f], Maritina, Marigo (also has a “hillbilly” image, though), [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], Marinella, [name_m]Maro[/name_m]. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] could also be an option, since the Greek version of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (Margarita) is also our word for the daisy flower.
Some non-Greek ones: [name_f]Mariangela[/name_f], [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Maren[/name_f], [name_f]Mari[/name_f], [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] / [name_m]Marlow[/name_m] / [name_f]Marlo[/name_f], [name_f]Marley[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
From your list I like [name_f]Marta[/name_f] the most, although I don’t think [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] is too out there! And I think [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] can work for [name_f]Margie[/name_f]!
Thank you so much! [name_f]My[/name_f] other yiayia is [name_f]Stella[/name_f] so [name_f]Maristella[/name_f] is fun. I love Marianthi but I think it would be to out there for my husband. I’m glad a few of you think [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] can work, I’m hoping so! I also love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], it’s on my list (DH isn’t a fan of “herb” names, which is a bummer because I love Basil). Right now I’m leaning toward [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] and [name_f]Marcella[/name_f]. I like the idea of [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] but it falls more into the guilty pleasure category right now.

I like Marcella; it’s bright and elegant! [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] is lovely too. I don’t find it too out there - similar enough to [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] etc. that it works.
I like [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] too. Maybe [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] / [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] so you’ve got the ‘rgie’ sound too?
Some other ideas:
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Marilena[/name_f]
Marianni
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
Marigo
[name_f]Megara[/name_f]
[name_f]Maribel[/name_f] / [name_f]Marabel[/name_f]
