Honoring Grandpa

My husband recently shared that the only man in his family he would consider as a namesake is his Grandpa whose name was [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. We both distinctly dislike [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m], however the meaning of firery appeals. The only other name I know with a similar meaning is [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], which I do not favor. Any thoughts. We are thinking of firey in the sense of how fire purifies metal, a strong flame that refines character vs. angry/quick tempered.
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] makes me think of [name_m]Hughey[/name_m] [name_m]Dewey[/name_m] and [name_m]Louie[/name_m] from duck tales.

Duck Tales was a long time ago, unless Disney had a remake I wasn’t aware of I (speaking for just me) wouldn’t make an association like that.
When I think of [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] I actually think of [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Grant[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] (from house)
I think it is a nice strong masculine name.

[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] means ‘born of fire or handsome’. If the you can’t find an appealing name meaning ‘fire’ there’s always [name_m]Beau[/name_m] as a back up plan.

Congratulations and best of luck in your search!

Haha, [name_m]Hughey[/name_m], [name_m]Dewey[/name_m], and Lewey. I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], and not once had that crossed my mind! I think more of a rugged Scotsman with a pretty awesome brogue to boot! I do like the variant [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] more, maybe use that, or use it as a middle? Or even [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] as a middle?

This is a HUGE stretch (so probably just ignore it, haha), but I think of the Bible verses about fire refining a person’s character, and if your family is [name_m]Christian[/name_m], maybe take inspiration from the writer of some of those words? Otherwise, I think [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]/[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] (or the PP’s suggestion of [name_m]Beau[/name_m]) is your best bet.

Good luck!

This might sound totally stupid, but my first thought when I read [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] was [name_m]Keanu[/name_m]. If Grandpa [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] doesn’t have the same surname as your husband, you might could consider his surname as well. I also like the suggestion of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

I like the name [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. You don’t see it on a lot of lists, but it is traditional & strong. Good luck!

My dad’s name is [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] & he’s 60 something but still surfing, jetskiing , kayaking, mountain biking :stuck_out_tongue: so I think it’s a great name, very masculine & ambitious. I also really like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] as an alternative. GL.

There are variations of [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]–[name_m]Kent[/name_m], [name_m]Kendrick[/name_m], [name_u]Kendall[/name_u], [name_m]Ken[/name_m].

[name_u]Keegan[/name_u] is the first name that comes to mind: not only does it start like [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m], it also is said alternately to mean fiery, flame, etc.

Also, what about a boy name that ends with -ken ?
Such as: [name_u]Laken[/name_u], Larken, or [name_m]Brecken[/name_m]?
Or, ending in -eth, such as Wyeth ?

Other: [name_m]Brand[/name_m]/[name_m]Brander[/name_m] (“a fiery torch/sword” or “to burn”), [name_m]Inigo[/name_m] (“ardent, fiery”), [name_u]Mackay[/name_u] (“son of fire/son of the fiery one”), Tyce/[name_u]Tyson[/name_u] (“firebrand”, son of)

Thank you everyone! I am so impressed with your thoughts. You know when something seems blah and you just can’t see anything else? That’s where I was at, so thanks so much!

[name_u]Ashley[/name_u], I am always blessed by your remarks. I was thinking of that verse.

Mom3 thanks for sharing about your dad. It’s nice to have a different perception.

I don’t think we’d ever be interested in [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] but I sort of like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. A friend has a dog with that name…has this name gone to the dogs?

I will run McKay and some of these others by dh.

Thanks!
