Honour names

What are your ‘honour names’?

Names you would include in your child’s name in honour to a loved one, location, memory, etc.

Please, feel free to include reasons, but like my ‘tainted names’ thread, reasons aren’t compulsory!

Mine are:

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
Karsia
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
& [name_u]Ash[/name_u]!

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] sparks memories from my early childhood. I won’t go into detail but you know what I mean!

Karsia is a very unique name. I knew a girl, a very long time ago, named Karsia. She was simply magical, mysterious… She was… Indescribable. I’ve never met a girl as ethereal as her. I think about her every single day. If you met her, you would know what I mean. She was simply so interesting. I may never meet her again, but she has shaped my life ever so, and she doesn’t even realise it.

[name_u]Luca[/name_u] is the name of my little brother. I love him so much. I’m so proud of him, he’s simply fantastic. He’s the smartest boy I know.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is to honour a close friend I lost to suicide.

[name_u]Ash[/name_u] is my little sister’s nickname. She’s my entire world. I don’t love anyone more than her. She is simply so amazing. I can’t describe it. I tear up whenever I think about what my world would be like without her. We are extremely close. She’s adopted from Nepal, and from the day we met, I simply fell in love with her, and have always felt such a strong connection. We truly are sisters, thanks to adoption. She made my world so much brighter. To have a part of her within my own child would be absolutely amazing.

So, what are yours?

I liked hearing your reasons

For me:
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]/[name_f]Juno[/name_f] -a very subtle nod to my mum’s name
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- a nod to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] Brontë and also a very obscure, walk about way of honouring a family name [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]- after a favourite character

I’m not huge on honour names, but these are just a couple I’d consider

Mine would be:

[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_f]Jill[/name_f]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_m]Gustav[/name_m]

[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] is the name my parents wanted for the son they never had
[name_f]Jill[/name_f] is my nan’s name, we’ve always been close and I’d love to honour her with my child’s name
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] & [name_m]Gustav[/name_m] all have a special personal connection to me and they’re also names I love

Lynn - After both of my sisters.
Mae - After my favorite aunt, her mn is Mae.
Nichole - After my 2 childhood best friends. One’s first name is Nicole, and other has the mn Nichole.
Rhiannon - My mom’s first choice/top pick name for me. Since I don’t really like my mom’s name, and neither does she, I thought I could honor her by using her ‘would be’ name for a girl.
Makeda’s nn Kody - My absolute best friend’s name is Cody, but I want a longer name and to use Cody or Kody as the nn.

Nathaniel - My mom’s top pick for a boy. Another name I’ve taken from her list to honor her.
Scott - My hero, idol, and inspiration bears this as his middle name. It’s also the first name of one of my favorite science teachers/life mentor/good friend, and the last name of another teacher who got me back into writing.
Michael - My grandfather always gave us Saint Michael pendents and coins, and since I don’t care for the name John, I thought Michael would be a good alternative as I strongly relate the name to him. It also happens to be the mn of the previously mentioned science teacher, and the mn of my favorite history teacher/life mentor/wonderful friend/father figure in my life.
James - My other grandfather’s name, also a male variant of Jacqueline, so it works as a two-for-one to honor both him and my sister.
Mason’s nn Ase - Ace is another favorite name of my mom’s, and I thought it’d make a cute nn for a Mason!
Orion - I associate this name with my first love. He once stargazed with me but turns out the only constellation he could identify was Orion’s Belt. I would never name my child after a previous love or an ex directly but, I thought, since he’s still actively in my life and one of the greatest friends I’ve ever had and this memory brings me such joy, I could still honor him in this way.

And to an extent…Madeleine & Clara, if you count honoring your favorite band & your favorite TV character, both of which changed my life in ways I can’t really explain.

Most honour names would be in the middle spot, as that’s a family tradition. It could be in the first spot if I really love it.

For girls:
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] - [name_f]Ann[/name_f] is a family name, shared by my mother and grandmother, but I find t very dated. I much prefer [name_f]Anna[/name_f] as a middle, or names ending -ana for a first name, such as [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] or [name_f]Liliana[/name_f].
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] (not sure how I prefer it spelt) - manages to honour both of my parents. I first thought of this for a middle name, but I’ve kinda fallen in love with the nickname [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], so would also love it as a first name.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - to honour a family member [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], but with a fresher twist. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] has the added bonus of being the name of my boyfriend’s mother, so we could get a double whammy.

For boys:
I don’t love boys names so much. It’s hard to find names that are similar, but seem more fresh. The men in my family have names quite tied to their generation (so do the women, but there’s more variety in girls names). As such, my top boys middle names would be [name_m]Charles[/name_m], as the masculine fit of my grandmother’s name, or [name_m]Piers[/name_m], as a form of my grandfather’s.

I’ll start with girls:
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]- it honors my dad. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] has the same first two letters as my dads name. It also roughly means ‘industrious’, and I probably made this connection up but when I think industrious I think hard working and working with your hands which basically describes my brother. So I love that [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] connects both my dad and my brother.

[name_f]Louise[/name_f]- (I will most likely use this as a middle). [name_f]Louise[/name_f] has been passed down on both sides of my family. It was part of my great grandmas first name (she had the same name as me), it’s my great aunts name who passed away as a child, it’s my mom, aunts, and cousins middle name and it’s part of my first name. I also love the meaning; it has reminded me that I am a warrior.

Wildflower- Wildflower is a tough one to explain. First, my mom loves wildflowers. She can name every single one she sees so I like that connection to her. Secondly, I like the thought that being a wildflower means you don’t have to conform with anything or anyone else. Everyone single one of them is unique, so you can be one thing one day and another thing another day. If that makes sense.

[name_f]Scotland[/name_f]- it has a deep connection to my mom but I’m not gonna go into detail

Side note: my mom hates her name (and all variants) so that’s why I have found other names to honor her

Onto the boys:
[name_m]Finian[/name_m]- I read a book and [name_m]Finian[/name_m] was the main character. He was strong, determined, and intelligent but he made mistakes, bad mistakes. He fixed them though, with time and patience. I know my son will never be perfect, so I hope that he will be patient and strong enough to forgive and fix it.

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]- it’s my brothers name so it’s a bit self explanatory why it’s an honor. We have been through so much together. He is my protector, best friend, and comforter. He is the kind of man I want my son to grow up to be.

[name_m]Wilder[/name_m]- it is a lyric in a song that has to do with my faith and gave me hope. I’m not gonna go on a whole rant but this song changed my life (I know, it’s cheesy).

The only one I can think of is [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. I would consider using it as a middle name. [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is my best friend’s nickname. We have been through so much together and I love her to death. My favorite name at the moment is [name_f]Elliana[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Elliana[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is really cute.

[name_m]Zander[/name_m], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], or [name_m]Anders[/name_m] to honor my brother [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
[name_u]Carmen[/name_u] or Garden/ia to honor my sister [name_u]Carmen[/name_u].
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] for my mother [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f].
[name_u]Kyle[/name_u], [name_m]Kyler[/name_m], or [name_f]Kylia[/name_f] for my father [name_u]Kyle[/name_u].
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Carla[/name_f] or [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] for my step father [name_m]Charles[/name_m].
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] or [name_m]Judah[/name_m] for my grandmother [name_f]Judy[/name_f].
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] for my great grandmother [name_f]Peggy[/name_f].
[name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_u]Arden[/name_u], or [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m] for my great grandfather [name_m]Bernard[/name_m].
Emre or [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] in honor of my maiden surname.
[name_u]Corin[/name_u] or [name_u]Puck[/name_u] to honor a dear friend who played these characters so wonderfully.
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] or [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] to honor another dear friend for the same purpose.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], lark, and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] to honor parts I’ve played myself that shaped who I am today.
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f], [name_f]Acadia[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] to honor musicians that changed my life for the better.

I love [name_f]Honor[/name_f] names!

[name_f]Gigi[/name_f] - My last name starts with a G. So I would love to use a girl’s name that starts with a G. This would allow for [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] as a nickname ( which is what we called my grandma instead of calling her grandma)

[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] - I want a G name as explained above. Also both my name and my sister’s name end in -elle.

[name_f]Kimber[/name_f] - my mom gave birth a premature girl years before I was born and named her [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u]. She only stayed here for a few moments before leaving this world, however she saved my life. The complications that took her life we’re watched for while my mom was pregnant with me. I was born emergency c section at 1 lb 15 oz. I believe she helped save my life.

Deleaney - most people on my mom’s side, aunt’s, uncle’s, cousins, & including myself have names that start with the letter D. My paternal grandmother ( who I spent a large portion of my childhood with) had the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I feel like this name honors both sides of my family

[name_m]Becket[/name_m] ( the first letter of each name) [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_m]Carl[/name_m], [name_u]Kay[/name_u], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Thurman[/name_m]. Doesn’t get all the grandparents but many of them

I have a few more but those are the top contenders

My daughter’s middle name, [name_u]James[/name_u], if a family name on my husband’s side. We decided to continue the tradition by using it as a middle name for our first child, no matter the gender, and we ended up with [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u].

For our next child I want to honour my brother who passed away from cancer as a teenager. His name is [name_m]Connor[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is also my dad’s mn so if we have a boy, the mn will be [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. For a girl I love the idea of using [name_u]Connolly[/name_u] as a mn. It honours [name_m]Connor[/name_m] and means “love, friendship” which I think is perfect.

My oldest daughter’s middle names - [name_f]Edeline[/name_f] and [name_f]May[/name_f] - are both family names.

And my youngest daughter’s middle is [name_f]Rohana[/name_f] which is a name we just loved but it’s also a nod to my husband’s Grandpa, [name_m]Ron[/name_m].

We have some other names on our lists that have family meaning to us, too. Including Ruca, Paiva, [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and [name_f]Julieta[/name_f] for girls and [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_m]Tomasso[/name_m], [name_m]Piet[/name_m] and [name_m]Odin[/name_m] for boys.

[name_m]Judah[/name_m]/[name_u]Jude[/name_u] honors my mother-in-law. We are planning to use this for a boy. It’s one of the two family names I’ve been able to agree on with my spouse.

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]/[name_f]Lux[/name_f] honors my mother. Unusable for us due to our niece having a name that’s too close for comfort for my spouse.

[name_u]Rae[/name_u] is both my and my mother’s middle name. This is the other family name I will likely get to actually use.

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] is the middle name of my best friend. I also love how plainly beautiful it is.

[name_f]Laura[/name_f] honors my wife’s best friend and the mother of our godchildren. We adore her and have talked about honoring her with this name, or reworking it as [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]/[name_f]Laure[/name_f].

[name_m]William[/name_m] honors my father-in-law. It’s also the middle name of my brother-in-law and nephew. I love it but my spouse isn’t keen - though she likes nn [name_m]Liam[/name_m], so I think she could maybe be convinced.

[name_m]Landon[/name_m] has been used (or reworked into [name_f]Ladonna[/name_f] for girls) in four generations of my family. I hate how popular it’s gotten, only because I miss having it as a hidden gem on the family tree. I understand how popular it’s gotten, because it is a great name! I would use this in a heartbeat if my spouse would agree. I do think about reworking it as [name_u]Landry[/name_u], which might get buy in from my spouse.

[name_f]October[/name_f] is the month I got married, and we have talked about using it for that reason.

[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] as a combo honors [name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] Disney. We will likely use this, although possibly reworking it as [name_m]Watson[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u].

[name_m]Arrow[/name_m]- for my dad who loves archery, and for the symbolism if needing to gi back so you can go forward
[name_u]Jameson[/name_u]- variation of my dads name, and my godfathers middle starts with a J as well
[name_m]Westley[/name_m]- for my favorite uncle [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] and my love of the princess bride
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]- [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is the meaning of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] so it’s a round about way of honoring my and my fathers shared love of [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and also a nod to my Godfather for introducing me to the 1994 movie [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] which really impacted my life
[name_u]Fable[/name_u]- I wasn’t raised on any traditional religion, rather [name_m]Aesop[/name_m]'s Fables and other myths and legands with cautionary tales
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]- a nod to my sister and God sisters love of [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]
[name_u]Story[/name_u]- a nod to me as I’m an author
[name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]- [name_f]Anne[/name_f] for my foster mom, grandma and sister and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] for my mom and other sister
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]- a play on my godsisters and godmothers middle name
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]- both of my sisters birth stones
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]- for my grandmother who everyone says is descended from the [name_f]Faye[/name_f] and for [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] [name_m]Le[/name_m] [name_f]Fey[/name_f]
[name_f]Renee[/name_f]- my middle

[name_f]Eila[/name_f] - after my niece [name_f]Ella[/name_f], who died shortly before her first birthday. I love that when written out it looks almost exactly the same, but its pronounced much differently.

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] - my mother’s name is [name_f]Theresa[/name_f], while I’m not sure we’d use it, but I love that there’s this natural nickname for it.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - both of my brothers have the middle name of [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]

[name_f]Shoshana[/name_f] - [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is a family name, it was my great-grandmother’s name, it’s my youngest cousin and my niece’s middle name.

[name_f]Mae[/name_f] - my husband and I first met in [name_f]May[/name_f]. It’s also his grandmother’s name.

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] - would also honor my niece and our love of Montreal/[name_m]Quebec[/name_m] and [name_f]France[/name_f]

[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] - my husband loves comics, and professor X is one of his favorites
