We’re hoping to have a new baby in our family this year, if all goes according to plan. I have a strong hunch it’s going to be a girl - or maybe a strong hope - but my husband and I are vexed about settling on a girl’s name.
Our first son’s name is [name]Malcolm[/name] Fionnlagh, and should we have another son he will be [name]Alasdair[/name] (or [name]Alistair[/name], can’t decide on a spelling yet).
Names I like that have been vetoed:
[name]Aveline[/name] (I [name]LOVE[/name] this one but he really doesn’t)
[name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name] (too popular for both of us)
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Aine[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name]/[name]Cecilia[/name]
Caiomhe
Names he’s suggested:
[name]Ada[/name] (as in Lovelace - I like it but don’t love it, and I’m afraid it’s going to become much more popular over the next few years)
[name]Hypatia[/name] (this is just too much name for me - she’d constantly have to spell it/repeat it and it’s a bit too out there)
[name]Lyra[/name] (nice but doesn’t ring my bell)
[name]Tempest[/name] (used to love this one but I’m not crazy about it anymore)
[name]Winter[/name]
A name we both sorta like but think would be too difficult for people to “get” here in the US:
[name]Roisin[/name]
Obviously my husband tends to prefer names that have a strong namesake, which for me is a bonus but not a very high priority. I like a lot of Gaelic/Scottish/Irish names, but I recognize that using the traditional spellings will likely get confusing. I don’t want anything too popular - [name]Malcolm[/name] at #498 is pushing it a bit for my tastes, but my husband and I were too in love with the name to not use it! Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
I think you and your husband have extremely interesting taste. I also don’t think [name]Ada[/name] will become crashingly popular, but I do think it’s too plain to stand next to [name]Malcolm[/name]. [name]Hypatia[/name] is very cool, but quite a guilty pleasure name. Thoughts:
Oh I also like your tastes. Quite different, but I think you could find a happy middle. I like the suggestions of [name]Sidonie[/name] and [name]Rosalind[/name].
If he likes [name]Ada[/name], though, why not [name]Augusta[/name]? It was her first name, and I think it goes much much better with [name]Malcolm[/name]. It’s not popular at all and has some decent namesakes.
[name]Cordelia[/name] may be a bit closer to your thing, since you like [name]Cecelia[/name]. They have a very similar feel to me. It also has a couple of namesakes, too.
I looove Irish names, and although I know some true Irish natives would hate me for it, I would always use the Anglicized versions of the name here in the US. [name]Roisin[/name] is one of my personal faves… are you pronouncing it [name]RO[/name]-[name]SHEEN[/name]? Another acceptable translation is [name]Rosaleen[/name], which I think has a prettier sound and is very unique! [name]Malcolm[/name] and [name]Rosaleen[/name] sound nice together, I think. And there are plenty of nicknames to consider
I’m with you on trying for a 2013 baby… good luck!
Thanks! I hadn’t thought about the “too plain” angle. I think that’s what was bothering me. I absolutely [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Valentina[/name] (or [name]Valentine[/name] for a boy, but I wouldn’t dare), but the husband has nixed it. However, we are now mulling over [name]Rosalind[/name] pretty seriously. I’m not sure why it didn’t occur to me before. Appreciate the input.
Good luck to us both! I think the [name]Rosa[/name]- names fit quite nicely with [name]Malcolm[/name] - [name]Rosaleen[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Rosamund[/name], etc. [name]Don[/name]'t know why I hadn’t considered them 'til now! I do pronounce it Ro-sheen, though the first time I heard it was while watching a performance by Roisin Murphy on some British TV show, and the presenter pronounced it more like “Rah-sheen”, which is now what’s stuck in my head! I like the “Ro” sound so I can use Rosie, though.
