How about a last name for a first name?

The blog of favorite place names got me thinking about other possibilities for names. There are nature names and word names. What about last names/surnames?
I met someone who named their little girl [name]Gentry[/name]. Not a family name, just a name they liked. It had to grow on me, but it’s pretty cute!
Can you think of some possible last names that could be used for first names?

Thought I would bump this up since I started this late last night to see if anyone has any ideas one last time. Thanks!

I know Nameberry has had other posts on this, but I also remembered this list from [name]Abby[/name] Sandel at Appellation Mountain. Rare Surname Names for Girls: Adair, Isley, Zavala - Appellation Mountain

I’m not a huge fan of surname names for girls, but [name]Hadley[/name] is cute and I could maybe consider [name]Ellis[/name] or [name]Embry[/name]. Or maybe [name]Marlowe[/name].

Thanks a bunch. I didn’t mean to be a bother. I’m new here so I don’t know all of the posts and blogs that have gone on.
I have always really liked [name]Hadley[/name]. I had no idea that it was a surname.

No, no bother! I have posted a question on the forums before only to discover that I MYSELF had posted the same question weeks earlier! I just couldn’t come up with any of the other posts on this off the top of my head, but I did think of the Appellation Mountain post. I think there has been more attention on surname names for boys than for girls!

If I find any of the other Nameberry posts, I’ll post them for you.

Ha! [name]Just[/name] found one. Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums

Ok good! Thank you. It’s always hard to read people on these things! And thanks for the links!!

I actually love [name]Arden[/name].

[name]Arden[/name] is very pretty! I don’t know if I have heard it before. I had no idea how many names I knew that were actually surnames. I appreciate your help! I can’t seem to come up with any names that I love for girls and when I do, my husband doesn’t seem to like them. So I was trying to think of different type names that aren’t too popular and a little bit different!

I actually had the same thought about the place names. So many of them it is hard to call them a place name because the name itself is so common. Like [name]Charlotte[/name], for example. Anyway, good luck coming up with some new possibilities!

I love last names as first names, especially if the last name has a family connection. I would love to give a daughter a last name as a first, but all the ones in my family feel too masculine ([name]Montgomery[/name], Truss, Edwards, [name]Lee[/name]) and the ones on hubby’s side are all very [name]German[/name]. I just can’t see naming a girl Klinger. :frowning:

In the southeast where I’m from we do that kind of thing a lot. I know kids named [name]Wells[/name], [name]Mills[/name], [name]Reid[/name] (a boy and a girl), an [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Livingston[/name] who goes by [name]Livy[/name], [name]Ford[/name]. I keep searching the family tree to see if I can find something usable, but no luck so far.

I believe I just replied to your thread! I know what you mean about family names. The last names in my family I would not be able to use. Unless it was for a boy, but even then, I have more boy names I would like better. Girl names are just so hard for me!
