My husband passed away in [name_u]November[/name_u] and struggling and grieving as I have been I am only now thinking of names for my daughter. My husband’s name was [name_m]Paul[/name_m], how do you think I can honor him beyond the obvious [name_f]Paula[/name_f], [name_f]Paulette[/name_f] or [name_f]Pauline[/name_f]?
So sorry to hear of your loss harvest, how awful for you. I saw on another post someone had suggested [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as an honour name for [name_m]Paul[/name_m] which I think would be a beautiful way to honour your husband
I think a middle name would be a good way to approach it, if you’re not too fond of [name_f]Pauline[/name_f]/[name_f]Paulette[/name_f]/[name_f]Paula[/name_f] like me.
I’m so sorry for your lost. I came here to suggest [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], as others already did. Or any P name could work as a slight connection.
I am the one whose recent post pp’s are talking about. If babe is a girl, I’ll be using [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a middle name to honor my great-grandfather [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. I think it’s fitting and feminine as an honor name, but I considered many other options before settling on [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], many of which I liked just as much.
I like [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], [name_f]Paulina[/name_f], [name_f]Pavlina[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], even [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Posy[/name_f] could be fitting. I also like Pavlova, like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] Pavlova, the ballerina.
As far as honor based on meaning, [name_f]Edlyn[/name_f] is my favorite option, which I think is stunning and I would really like to meet a little [name_f]Edlyn[/name_f].
I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this loss. I am sending you well wishes for labor and beyond. I know it can be an extremely trying time for women in your situation, but I can’t even really imagine how I would feel. I’m sure you will find a way to honor your husband no matter the names you choose.
I’m terribly sorry for your loss.
Using your husband’s first and middle initials to create a combo you love would be a great way to honor him.
You could pick a full name like [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and nickname her [name_f]Polly[/name_f].
Thank you all. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] would make a beautiful middle name, I suppose it depends on what I pair it with. Of other names suggested [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] was particularly intriguing and I do love [name_f]Polly[/name_f], though I’m not sure if I can see it on a grown woman.
A few other ideas to get the nickname “[name_f]Polly[/name_f]” [name_f]Amapola[/name_f], [name_f]Apollyne[/name_f], [name_f]Apolonia[/name_f]. I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you find an honor name you love.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Nova[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
So sorry for you loss. Such an incredibly tough time you must be going through right now.
I love the name [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and it sounds very close to [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. I really like the idea of using a name that includes [name_m]Paul[/name_m]'s initials too.
You could also consider a name that has meaning - perhaps something that you and your husband both loved to do together. For example, my husband and I both love to listen to the rain at night on the roof. When searching for names we came across the name [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] which means night rain. Or perhaps the name of the flower from your wedding bouquet, a favourite holiday destination or place [name_m]Paul[/name_m] loved to visit or somewhere that was of significance for you both, perhaps a name from one of your husbands favourite films, songs or books. A name that has ties to [name_m]Paul[/name_m]'s favourite colour, time of year/season or [name_m]Paul[/name_m]'s personality traits (e.g names that mean strong, kind, protector etc…).
Sending you much love and strength to get through this. I am sure [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is watching over you and your little ones and is so proud of you. All the best beautiful mother xxoo
I don’t have any other suggestions- love [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], would never have thought of that- and was going to say the same as @breeday, picking something that’s meaningful to you. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to say that I’m so sorry to hear about your husband, and best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy, birth and having a new baby. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you have lots of support. hugs
I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve come through the same situation 19 years ago so I really know how you are feeling. My late boyfriend passed away when I was pregnant. We were 18 then and we weren’t married. Anyway, I used his full name as my daughter’s name I gave her a second middle, her father’s favourite name. The flow isn’t great, especially with my long hyphenated last name and her name was on the top of the popularity list in our country, but we don’t mind.
Anyway, I think that you can use something else except of your late husband’s name, if you don’t like any of the feminine versions. You can honour him in another, more subtle way.
There is an interesting thread on nameberry: Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums
I’m sure that your daughter will adore the name you’ll choose for her to honour her father!
Good luck!
So sorry for your loss [name_f]Hope[/name_f] my suggestions help your search!
I too have been searching for honour names for [name_m]Paul[/name_m], and it’s a difficult one! Here’s what I’ve found:
[name_f]Paola[/name_f] - Italian version of [name_f]Paula[/name_f], shares the meaning ‘small’. Nn [name_f]Ola[/name_f]
[name_m]Paul[/name_m] also means rare, scarce and humble. Possibly look for names which share these meanings?
[name_f]Ula[/name_f] - shares the ‘rare’ meaning. I love [name_f]Ula[/name_f], bonus is it contains all letters except P from [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. Also a beautiful nn for the full [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f]. Which I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]! To add another connection although long winded; the [name_m]French[/name_m] variation [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] is the leading lady of a [name_u]Poe[/name_u] poem…
[name_u]Poe[/name_u] - variation of [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. Cute middle or use [name_f]Posy[/name_f] nn [name_u]Poe[/name_u]?
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is also one I’ve shortlisted as an honour name for [name_m]Paul[/name_m].
[name_f]Paola[/name_f] is my fave, it’s really grown on me, especially nn [name_f]Ola[/name_f]. But a close second for me is [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f].
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps you in your search.
Sorry for your loss. My name is [name_f]Paula[/name_f], so have noticed the alternatives, over the years. [name_f]Pauletta[/name_f], [name_f]Paulina[/name_f], Paulanne and Paulanna are a little prettier, and more unusual, than [name_f]Paula[/name_f] and [name_f]Pauline[/name_f]. [name_f]Pollie[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is associated with these names, a traditional [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] short form. I can’t use it myself, only because it doesn’t work with my last name. A “P” name, such as [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Paige[/name_f] or [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], might work.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned [name_m]Pauley[/name_m], which I think is a nice [name_m]Paul[/name_m] variation (as in actress [name_m]Pauley[/name_m] [name_f]Perrette[/name_f]).
You mentioned in another thread that your husband had suggested [name_f]Iris[/name_f] for the new baby, so I think “[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]” would be wonderful. If not that, then a name with the nickname [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and then [name_f]Iris[/name_f] for the middle name - “[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]” would be my choice. ([name_f]Polly[/name_f] is a traditional nickname for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]). Best wishes to you and your family.
if you aren’t fond of female versions of [name_m]Paul[/name_m], I think [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] can work since they both begin with P. Or maybe you can choose a name that has the same meaning as [name_m]Paul[/name_m]? Although that name won’t be directly connected to [name_m]Paul[/name_m]…
But here are some girl names that means small and begins with P
[name_u]Paget[/name_u] - means small page
Paharita - means small bird
Pebbles - small rocks
[name_f]Piera[/name_f] - small rock
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - small flower
I’m so sorry for your loss!
Ijust wanted to give you another option for an honor name,
My first daughter passed away, so when I got pregnant with another girl I really wanted to honor her big sister. So we went with the birth month of my daughter who passed away as a middle name for our new baby.
I love it so much, and it makes me so happy that they have that connection.
Best of luck to you!
So sorry for your loss.
I suggested this on another thread, but what about [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]? Nicknames could be [name_f]Polly[/name_f] or [name_m]Paulie[/name_m].
I’m so sorry for your loss. What a lovely way to honor him.
Another option might be [name_f]Paola[/name_f]?
You could also go with a name with the same/similar meaning – there are thousands listed on this site: THOUSANDS OF FEMALE NAMES MEANING "SMALL", "TINY", "LITTLE" for your dog, horse, cat, pet or child from
Or you could go with a name meaning something like ‘father’s child,’ or ‘father’s beloved’ – one example is [name_f]Abigail[/name_f].
