[name_f]My[/name_f] full name is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and I’ve always hated it. It doesn’t help that my parents chose a stretchy nickname that I’ve always gone by (Emmy). I don’t like my nickname either. It feels so young and hard to grow into, but my birth name just feels disconnected from me as a person because I’ve never gone by it and it’s not even close to my nickname. I have considered changing my full name to [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and probably will in the future, but I would still probably go by [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. I would love any advice on how to grow to love this name!
As someone who also dislikes their name, I’ve found feeling neutral or indifferent is easier than trying to love it. And one way I’ve tried to do that is by looking at my name objectively? So, I’ll offer some general good points about [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]!
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]: recognisable, versatile, solidly classic, most people know how to spell it, multiple nickname options if you want to consider another nickname
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]: recognisable and familiar, multiple nickname options, a bit of flair without feeling over the top
[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]: sweet but solid, recognisable, could be shorted to [name_f]Em[/name_f], doesn’t feel any more young to me than [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Abby[/name_f] - I’ve also met an adult [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], if it helps
You could consider:
- asking your parents why they chose it and why they like it
- think about other names you’d think would suit you - could you imagine wearing them and feeling connected to them any more than you do your current one
- Try using your birth name (or Emilia) in new situations or just in general - see how it feels. It might take time to get used to - give yourself that time
- Consider trying out alternative nicknames if [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] feels too young for you
