How closely should I follow pattern?

[name]Just[/name] found out the LO we are expecting in February will be a boy. So excited for our first to be a big brother. There are several naming patterns that we could follow but I’m not sure how closely we should stick to any of them.

DS: [name]Henrik[/name] [name]Allen[/name]
DH: [name]Mark[/name] [name]Allen[/name]
Me: [name]Krista[/name] [name]Alexis[/name]

We all have “k” in our name and a second name that starts with an “a”. Also, all our names follow the germanic/ scandinavian spelling as DH is german and I am swedish. Our last name is very german sounding.

The first names that we have thrown around are all scandinavian spelling, such as:
[name]Oskar[/name]
[name]Aleksandr[/name]
[name]Nikolai[/name]

We have no ideas for middle names other than using a shortened version of my middle name: [name]Alexei[/name]

With all these patterns I’m not sure where to start. If we don’t follow the “k” and “a” pattern I feel like our next born will be left out. We are not planning on having any more children. Maybe we’re just overthinking this and should scrap all the naming conventions, just go with something we love.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, we are so lost!!

[name]Henrik[/name] and [name]Oskar[/name] would sound wonderful together. My second choice is [name]Nikolai[/name]. There’s only one big drawback when following patterns: it severely limits your name choices. If you find names you [name]LOVE[/name] that fit the “k” and “a” patterns, that’s great! But if you intend on having more children in the future, you may have to branch out and explore other avenues. I think it’s more important that the name combo flows well with your surname than following any pattern.

Well, I think that abandoning the pattern would bother you.

I do think that [name]Henrik[/name], though immediately recognizable to Americans, is just shaded toward ‘foreign’ so I think you should choose a name/spelling that fits that pattern. For example, choose [name]Oskar[/name], [name]Kellan[/name], [name]Kaspar[/name] or [name]Dedrick[/name] over [name]Kurt[/name], [name]Frederick[/name] or [name]Erik[/name]. There seem to be lots of names, at first thought, that contain a ‘k’, so I’d stick with that pattern if I could. Is there a Scandanavian or [name]German[/name] version of [name]Michael[/name] spelled with a ‘k’?

The middle name seems less important, but if I were you, I would

  1. consider using [name]Alex[/name] or [name]Alexander[/name]
  2. consider using another family name that begins with an ‘a’
  3. consider using any name that begins with an ‘a’ or
just give up that part of the pattern and
  4. consider any family name that is important to you
    or
  5. choose what ever you like!

I love [name]Oskar[/name]! Great name and goes great with your set!

As for [name]Al[/name] names…
[name]Alben[/name]
[name]Aldous[/name]
[name]Altair[/name]
[name]Alvis[/name]
[name]Ansel[/name]

Thanks for your suggestions. There is a Swedish version of [name]Michael[/name], [name]Mikhail[/name], which was my 1st pick for a boy before we even found out we were pregnant. DH has a neice named [name]Mikaela[/name] so he veto’d that one saying they were too similar…
Either way, we have lots of options!

I think [name]Nikolai[/name] [name]Alexei[/name] would be a wonderful addition to your family. Two thumbs up!

I love the name [name]Oskar[/name] for your family! It sounds great next to [name]Hendrik[/name] ([name]Nikolai[/name] would be my second choice).

I like the idea but if I were you I wouldn’t necessarily worry about the ‘k’ trend because I think that is a slightly less-noticable pattern. Especially if this will be your last child I think it is most important for you guys to find that one name you love, however it also seems like you won’t have too much trouble finding a name you like with a ‘k’ in it (especially with the Scandinavian spellings).

I do think you should definitely use an ‘a’ name in the middle spot so all 4 of you can have that in common. Very cute tradition.
[name]Oskar[/name] [name]Alexei[/name] is downright amazing. Good luck! =]

Thanks for all the input guys, I really loved [name]Oskar[/name] [name]Alexei[/name] but DH wasn’t so sure about it. Now I’m going to stick to my guns (at least for now, who knows how I’ll feel once I meet baby). I also agree with PP about dropping the K pattern but sticking to the A middle name pattern. If we really can’t agree then it opens up a few more options.
