How many do you know/heard of in your area?
I know Kate just ranked #324 in the US now, but Katherine/Catherine and Kaitlyn/Caitlin, which are often used as full names for Kate, are very common names. I love Kate but don’t want my daughter to be one of several Kates in her school/work all her life.
i know 1 [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (but not well enough to know whether or not it’s a nn, also she’s middle aged), but plenty of [name_f]Katie[/name_f] & Katys - about half are full names and half are nicknames.
I honestly do not know any Kate’s under 10 and also that includes Katherine’s/Catherine’s, [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] & Katie. Maybe I just live in area where this name and other ‘Kate’ names are just not popular so personally I would find a little girl named [name_f]Kate[/name_f] really refreshing. So I wouldn’t worry about her being one of many Kate’s I think at school etc she would be the only one! [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is such a pretty, spunky choice. She’s just fun and I think a great choice.
I go by [name_f]Katie[/name_f] which was a very common nickname for kids born in the 80s/90s. Growing up, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] was sort of seen as a less friendly more stuck up version . Now, from what I can gather on nameberry, [name_f]Katie[/name_f] is so boring and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is so cool lol! So it would not surprise me if [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is becoming very popular for small children. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe more kids are actually going by Katherine?
I know a few Kates, Katies, and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] variants, but I like those names! I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is a fairly common name, but it’s not getting more popular. You also can’t predict how popular a name will be in your daughter’s life from the national data.
I’ve known plenty of Katie/Kate’s but I can only think of 1 under the age of 19. Though I know several toddlers named Catherine, they don’t go by Kate.
Only know one [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a full name. And one [name_f]Kate[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Katie[/name_f] for our childhoods but uses [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as an adult.
Lots of Katie, Katherine, Catherine, Caitlin, [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] though, if that would bug you.
I love the name Kate! I think it’s classic and beautiful. [name_f]My[/name_f] drawbacks on selecting [name_f]Kate[/name_f] would be will it commonly be misspelled with a C? [name_m]Will[/name_m] people automatically start calling her [name_f]Katie[/name_f] even though it’s Kate? That would bother me but maybe that doesn’t bother you. I think [name_f]Katie[/name_f] / [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] / [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and their spelling variations are more common for millenials but less common with this new generation.
I think I know 5 or 6 Kates but 3 of them I know are short for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] or something. One is in her 40s and the rest are all around my age (18-25 ish). 2 of them went by [name_f]Katie[/name_f] when they were younger and now go by Kate.
I know of one grown [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and have taught fewer than a handful in 30 years of teaching multiple grades. But I can’t speak for the babies.
Cate - 1
Kate - 3
Katie - 1
Kat - 1
Kathryn - 1
Katherine - 1
Some of the Kates may be Katherines, and vice versa. I would say you “hear” it pretty often because of all the variations but if you count the specific spelling of Kate then it is only occasionally
