[name_m]How[/name_m] did you discover your love for names? I was looking up a name for my book, and I came upon nameberry. I got so distracted in names! This was [name_u]August[/name_u] of this year. [name_m]How[/name_m] did you discover nameberry and how did you discover names? Thanks!
I discovered name berry when naming my [name_m]Sims[/name_m] in [name_f]April[/name_f] 2016 .
Same as @madi.li! Lol! I love playing the [name_m]Sims[/name_m], but I used to have such a hard time finding new names to use. I had long just googled ābaby namesā, but one day, that search led me to Nameberry. I quickly came to like the site and eventually stopped lurking and made an account. I canāt even remember when that wasā¦edit: [name_u]July[/name_u] of 2012, apparently lol.
My love of names has almost always been there. Iām not sure why, but Iāve just always been interested in names. From an early age, I was interested in names: finding out what people named their babies, learning what peopleās middle names were, learning what people were almost named, learning what names meant, learning the origins of names, and coming up with lists of names for my future offspring.
I have always loved names, but it really came to a head when my partner and I became serious about our relationship and got to the āletās get married and have kidsā point. We started talking about names, and we both love it so much. We stumbled onto Nameberry late one night, when we were chatting about names. Now I am addicted to the site lol
When I was a child (8, 9 or 10) I was obsessed with making fake families. [name_m]Just[/name_m] making up names for them all, writing them down in a notebook with their names next to them, and walking around imagining stories about their life. Everytime one of the fake people had a kid, or died, or had something interesting happen to them, Iād write it down in the notebook and keep on walking in circles around my childhood loungeroom, just daydreaming for hours about all the different families Iād made
This is going to sound embarrassing, but around that time I stumbled on a website called babynamegenie and started making fake name polls/fake stories about āmy familiesā. Yeah, never again. Eventually I heard about nameberry from the BNG forums and migrated here⦠years ago, I think. I just didnāt have an account because I didnāt (and donāt) have children, and wasnāt sure what the point would be. I just played all the name games in the games section. (And still do, sorry.)
Edit; wait jesus christ this is from 2016
I think itās an interesting thread to revive!
I donāt really remember when my interest in names started⦠my Dad gave me a book of name meanings when I was a little kid, but he might have done that because I was already interested? Or maybe it was to help me name the paper dolls I was always making!
I absolutely loved reading as a kid, and am also interested in languages, word etymology⦠so it just kind of fits.
Iām a big fan of stories. I wrote a lot when I was younger (still do) and one day I found a name book at a thrift store and decided to ask my parents to buy it for me to name my characters. I highlighted all my favorite names and since then was hooked on finding names I had never heard of or that had beautiful/interesting meanings or sounds. I used to always ask why peopleās parents named them their name because I loved the stories that came out of that too (though most were āI donāt knowā or āit sounded niceā lol). I googled names and Nameberry kept coming up, so eventually I signed up for it and now I go on here a little too much.
edit: oh i didnāt realize this was so old! whoops
I think it began when I was little and liked to name toys, imaginary friends and characters in stories.
I didnāt come across name nerd sites online until I googled ābad baby namesā after hearing the name Annleah which I thought was really terrible (though can say there are many, many worse names now!) and came across BNABBT ([name_u]Baby[/name_u]'s Named a Bad Bad Thing), then started lurking on the forums there and eventually joined. I found Nameberry through there, and use both sites (though prefer the former for more serious suggestions as I donāt like a lot of the more popular suggestions here).
Had never heard of them but they look like a pretty cool site⦠except I canāt register because the form still uses version one of ārecaptchaā to determine that Iām not a robot, which apparently no longer works⦠and I canāt contact them to let them know it doesnāt work, because a recaptcha is required just to contact them!
I think Iāve always had an interest in names but never truly embraced it until I was in fifth grade. I read a book about a girl who wanted to be an author (like I didāand still do!) and she had a name book to help her name her characters. Ten-year-old me thought that sounded like a great idea so I asked for a name book for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and got one. It was called 100,000+ [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names but I called it my Name Bible (before I knew that [name_f]Pam[/name_f] and [name_f]Linda[/name_f] actually have a book with that name!). I still have the book; it is missing the front and back covers, and the first and last two pages, it has been written in, dog-eared, and was probably dropped down the stairs a few times. It has been painfully loved.
I discovered Nameberry the summer before my freshman year of high school. @april-lover, I actually used [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_f]Genie[/name_f] at first too! I also made a ton of polls about my latest name or sibset fantasy and I do not feel bad about it because the people on that site were often jerks (and Iām pretty sure at least 60% of them are bored teens as well). Anyways, I found Nameberry when I happened to Google ābaby name gamesā in search of a new stomping ground. I came across a Picky Parents game and played it for hours by myself, without an account, just going through every post and thinking of my own answers before moving on. Soon after, I made an account at age 14, and Iām still here!
My love for names probably started when looking for my first daughterās name. I continued looking after she was born as we knew we wanted more children and I came across nameberry then. I finally joined when we were naming our second and since then itās definitely developed! Weāre likely not having anymore children but I still love to look and write my lists.
I remember looking for names for a fanfiction character when I was 14, and I think it all started from there. I first created a nameberry account when I was 16, but didnāt start using it regularly until I made this one. I do still use it primarily for fictional characters, though if I were to have a child, this would be the first place I looked for names.
I came across it while scouring for names in 2012/13, I loved making lists of future baby names and Y!A just wasnāt cutting it anymore. Joined up a few years later (under eoxima) and then newly switched to this.
I had always sort of cared about names when I was younger, but one name site I liked got shut down or something, so I looked up ā[name_u]Baby[/name_u] name websitesā, and I got an account, but I didnāt originally want to use the forums, but then I did and about a year later, Iām here now
I believe it was in [name_u]August[/name_u] of 2011. I was only 15 at the time!
I, too, stumbled upon Nameberry searching names for characters of a story I wanted to write. I stopped writing long ago, but my new found love for names just kept growing and growing!
I didnāt realise it then, but I became obsessed with names when I was really young. I loved coming up with new names for myself when I played games at school or with my sister. She used to get annoyed because Iād spend ages scrolling through lists to find a name I liked lol. I also used a name generator but I canāt remember the name of the site.
Then in the summer of 2017 I was looking for names for my [name_m]Sims[/name_m] and stumbled across Nameberry. At first, I just liked scrolling through old forum posts but then I decided to get an account.
Iāve always loved names. When I was little, Iād make up elaborate names for games with my little brother (Renbernet, pronounced [name_u]Ren[/name_u]-ber-nay for one), and I would also argue with friends over what characters in our skits would be called. However, my discovery of Nameberry came because of my love affair with gymnastics. I absolutely adored the names of several Russian gymnasts, and wanted to know their meanings and background. I lurked on the site for a couple years, before deciding to get an account.
I fell in love with linguistics and that whole circuit two years ago. I found out the meaning of my name awhile before that though (awesome meaning as well, which probably helped). Iāve always been attracted to some names more than others. I used to want three kids named [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_m]Dennis[/name_m], and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. So I started to get into names and their meanings, this was one of the principal sites I used. I decided to sign up two months ago, and here I am.
I think I joined the forum when I was pregnant w Azula, but didnāt become super active til I was considering names for [name_f]Indira[/name_f]. I always liked names though, used to check out name books from the library or just Google lists of mythological characters & stuff.
I just got bored one holiday in 2013 and started looking up unusual names and noted down their meanings. Then I got really obsessed and found my way onto a few forums (Nameberry being one) and I havenāt looked back since haha.
