I am wondering how difficult do you think it would be to transition my name from [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] to [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]. At the moment my name is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I am thinking of changing my name to spell [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]. What do you all think? [name_m]How[/name_m] easy would it be?
Legally… depends where you live and I think usually it involves a fee.
Socially, I think correcting people with “Actually I’m using the “ie” ending now” would go over just fine, it might take some time to stick with everyone but I dont think it would be difficult per se.
I would assume changing the spelling would involve the same amount of paperwork as changing to a different name. As to the transition of people you know spelling it the new way, I assume almost the same amount of time as learning a new name. I would also not be surprised if some might remain using your current name.
I won’t get too into my thoughts on changing names but I personally would only do it if I had a HORRIBLE upbringing and do it to free and protect myself. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I feel pretty neutral and ho-hum about my name, my parents put a lot of thought and time into giving me this name. They felt it was special for me.
I think that changing the spelling of your name to a less common one just adds unnecessary confusion. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is still the spelling that people who only hear your name out loud will default to when trying to write out your name for the first time. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] to [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] doesn’t change the pronunciation of the name or the meaning. It just causes a squiggly red line to appear on my computer. It would also be significantly harder for your family/friends/coworkers/acquaintances to adjust to [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] than to another name entirely.
I basically agree with @kmdharrington and I’d add that [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] seems pretty arbitrary, if your name is just [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and not a nickname for [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]/etc. The spelling makes me think of the Italian [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], so I kind of naturally read it as “loo-chee”.
I basically think it’s worth being aware of the existing associations, expectations and meanings around names in our culture, and not trying to reinvent conventions of spelling to suit your idiosyncratic taste, because it sounds like I’m not the only person who’s inclined to find it more confusing and self-indulgent than pretty or meaningful.
I think it would be no big deal. It’s still the same name, just a different spelling and no pronunciation changes. You might have some people wondering why you would bother, but never mind them.
