How do you feel about Dudley?

I can’t help but find this name endearing, for some reason. So, what are your thoughts? If you were to use [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], would you use it as a first or a middle?

It’s a dud.

Yep, the ‘Dud’ sound is too prominent - and combining that with the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character, I just can’t see it positively. If anything, I’d put it in the middle name spot.

Yeah, if anything use it as a middle name. I can see children making fun of a kid named [name_m]Dudley[/name_m].

I totally associate it with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. And he’s not some fascinating evil character ([name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], etc.) but was, for the most part, just a jerk (though both types of characters aren’t worth naming children after).

Have you been watching ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ ([name_u]Cary[/name_u] [name_m]Grant[/name_m]'s character)? He can get away with it, I suppose, but [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] would be rough for a child or teenager, however angelic.

My mind goes straight to [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] Doright from [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] and Bullwinkle. I wouldn’t.

We had a [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] in the family circa 1890, sorry I don’t like [name_m]Dudley[/name_m].

I do love [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], and it has significance in my family, however I’d only ever use it as a middle name because of the ‘dud’ part.

Have you considered [name_m]Duncan[/name_m] as an alternative?

I like this one. It’s classic and there’s more to life than [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
(That being said [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] is one of the few characters in HP who develops into a different person. In the beginning he’s a jerk and bully and very spoiled, but as the books go on, he becomes a nicer person. One of the last time we see him, he makes [name_m]Harry[/name_m] a cup of tea, which [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is suspicious of but realizes it’s meant as nice gesture.
I hate the so called “fascinating evil characters”. I don’t seem anything redeemable able say [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] and am repulsed by the idea people find her appealing. Evil is evil and evil is wrong.)
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!

My first thought is Dursley - I’m never going to be able to shake the HP association. That and the ‘Dud’ syllable… I don’t think it’s a viable first name, but maybe as a middle.

[name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]'s fat, mean cousin…

It reminds me of the HP character, but it also reminds me of a (female) classmate of mine back in high school whose parents gave her the name. God only knows why…

I think it’s a nice name-- I just worry about the “dud” part.

I actually really like it, but i’d hesitate to use it. Maybe if it was a family name.

I really think it’s quite stately and appealing! Apparently unlike other berries, [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] reminds me of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Austin[/name_m]'s ever-charming Mr. [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] of Pride & Prejudice more than anything  However, if you were to use it, for obvious reasons, put it in the middle.

[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]/[name_u]Darcey[/name_u] would be a great alternative if you needed one! I have a cousin named [name_u]Darcey[/name_u] (female), and I’m really not much for unisex names, but this one, I feel, would fit the bill for both girl or boy.

The other name I immediately thought of was [name_m]Duncan[/name_m] (already mentioned above). Although my husband hates this because it makes him think of Dunkin Donuts, in my opinion, it is still more original than his [name_u]Owen[/name_u]/[name_m]Nolan[/name_m] fascination. lol)

This totally caught me off guard in an awesome way!

+1

[name_m]Dudley[/name_m] is a place name in the midlands in [name_f]England[/name_f] which is much ridiculed here!

I like the name, but I totally second this comment! bahahaha

I feel with you for loving [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], because I have this weird thing for [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m]! I don’t like [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], though, sorry. If I did, I would probably put it in the middle because of “dud,” [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] Doright, and [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] Dursley.
